Received a call from "Officer Dan Weaver" of the Kirkland Police Department. He said that my grandson was in jail as the result of an accident and that they wanted $7,500.00 cash for his bail. He said that there was a 48 hour gag order and that I could not tell anyone else about it. They offered to send a courier to pick up the money. I reported this to the local Selah Police and they told me that this is a scam. I called my grandson and learned that he is just fine. This is a SCAM!!

Yes this is a fairly old scam where a phone call comes in and is answered by a targeted elderly person. With a phone number or name search I can tell you just abut everything you want to know about a person from the internet The caller says that a young man related to them was arrested for narcotic or alcohol related offense and needs several thousand dollars to get out of jail and they can send the money by Money Pac or Pay Pal or Western Union and they give the above return phone number which is out of Montreal Canada.. The funds are transferred to an account online or by phone.

They will even call back if they find a person gullible enough and try to up the amount of money and try for a second time to defraud them.

The way this works so well is that they target the elderly and the elderly often times can not hear well and they make up an urgent need for the funds to rattle the person called and to get them to speed up and get the money without first having time to think. Face it most elderly people do not want their friends knowing their relative has been arrested so they just go to the store and wire the funds or they can even do it by credit card. There are various version to this scam but looking at the dates on this report it has been going on at least since February 20112.

This is one of those scams that should be broadcast on the news along with a lot of other ones as public safety announcements. Being a phone number  out of the Country like this one in Montreal does not mean nothing can be done it just makes it harder to do. The best thing is to make people aware of the scam and then it will not work. Always report these scams to your local law enforcement personnel. You might save someone else from this scam.

My mother received this call also. She is elderly. Thank God she got a hold of me. Said a lawyer was claiming my son was in jail and they needed $4000 to bail him out. They even put a young man on the phone pretending to be her grandson and she was suspicious but also extremely upset. I thought she was going to have a heart attack. The young man told her not to tell mom and dad that he would tell us when he got home and he didn't want to upset us. She called me anyway. I called the number and read the so-called lawyer the riot act and told him I was reporting him to the police. Of course he hung up on me, and no big surprise, the police said they couldn't do anything about it and that it happens all of the time.

My grandma got a call today saying that I was in a car accident in in a forigeen country and to she 2700 dollars and from the American Embassy .  They also said someone else was in the car with me.  THIS IS A SCAM !

Got a call and young man said they were in car accident and being held by American Embassy and needed money sent so they could leave country. Scam phone call. Said they were drunk and in a rental car and the rental car insurance could pay back loan in five days. SCAM.......

Scam.  Same as above, called today, asking for money from "grandma".

Scam-called my Gma, said my fiance was in wreck. Wanted cash wired via western union.
