They did not leave a message. I called the number back immediately and it said that the number had been disconnected.

VOTE this answer up if you found it useful to help others that are in bad Economic times and all this does is add further stress file bankruptcy and do not acknowledge the debt or that you know the person they are calling for otherwise you will get harassed  but you can take legal action if they keep calling you.

YOU Can BLOCK THOSE Calls and if the DEBT is more than 3  years old you can say I do not not acknowledge this debt! And ask them to stop calling. As long as you do not acknowledge the debt they can not extend it another 3 years to try to collect.
At least there is a 3 year rule in Arizona and they have to stop calling to try to collect if you are being harassed you can take action against the company.
Also if they are calling your phone for someone else you can just state they have not reached the right person or this is a business phone and they have to stop calling if they are not reaching the Debtor it is not your job to give out any information just tell them that this is not the right person and please remove my name from your list or I will take legal action against your company.

Oh ya Portfolio One thing Portfolio needs to remember there are State established Satutes of Limitations on Debts they very by state and Sure they can be found on the internet Another thing is(pretty sure,could be incorrect) collectors are Not to call on Sundays which Portfolio has occassionaly done probably good to record those dates and times,Have to think back did Portfolio ever provide a service or product that there is a debt owed on?

Brian,  you might want to check on that.   They are required to provide written validation only if you request it.  Then they must provide it within 5 days of initial contact and upon request.  A person then has 30 days to  to dispute it.   They can continue to call  and attempt to collect a debt over the phone usless you have sent them a cease and desist or  have disputed the claim.   They can even sue without you ever receiving a written validation if you never requested it.  Even if the Statute of limitations has expired.  Now,  that doesn't mean that they will win or collect.  They are banking on you not showing up in court which all that they claim will give judgement in their favor whether the SOL  have expired or whether you owe it or not.

Just got a call from this #. I noticed this past week, I've been getting new unrecognized #s calling me, but every time I look up the #, it all leads to Portfolio Recovery. Thank you everyone for posting your experiences. They call my landline (I know...who has one of those nowadays?), but I have it as a fax line, so hopefully they enjoy the loud beep when it picks up.

Let your caller ID do the work and don't answer at all if you don't recognize the number. Telemarketers have been calling me for the past 6 months and they're just about pulling their hair out with me not answering since I turn off the answerer when strange numbers come up. Simple as that.

Just received a call this morning and did not answer. I don't need to answer to telemarketers!

These jerks have been calling for a few years. Fortunately we never answer numbers we don't recognize. I suspect these idiots are looking for someone who has the same name as mine. I've had this happen several times before. All my debts are paid and my credit reports show no outstanding debts. BTW, they also do buy old written off debt for pennies on the dollar then try to collect from you. If you really owed some debt, they would be sending you written documentation. They are just hoping you will answer and they will try to rope you in. Screw these blood suckers.

I keep getting these calls, day, night, anytime.  It is a debt collector and I do not have any debts at all, never have.  I am 81 and I want them to stop calling here as I am handicapped.  They are looking for someone else.

These cockroaches say they are only ALLOWED to harrass us once a week but they call everyday.

Please understand I am not making light of your situation because I am truly sorry that happened to you.  As a possible solution, you might look into changing your identity, meaning your SSN.  You have a Federal right to do that since your ID has been compromised (twice) and because of that it shouldn't affect your future benefits that are connected to your current SSN.  It's worth the time to research this.  You can restart most of your life (sans criminal record) by doing this.

I looked into it when my identity was stolen in 2010.  I ended up closing all accounts and getting a safe deposit box for cash didn't want to carry with me or keep in my home.  Turned out I got lucky.  The FBI and attorneys for the company these ID thieves said they were from took care of things and I had no more problems.  Today I have a debit card that I rarely use and I pay cash for everything.  My bank hates that, but tough s--t.  It's my money and my credit.

Robo called.  I love it!!  They has us on speaker so they don't hear when the phone gets answered.  Guess these wing nuts don't really want to talk to a human after all.  Donotcall.gov is where that number goes.

Same old, same old. I have no idea why they are calling me. I don't have and have never had past due bills. If they are calling for someone else why don't they leave a message. Next time I am going to answer the call and tell them whoever they are looking for died.

For all of YOU Other people who think that we're all deadbeats that don't pay our bills and have have those A***OLES constantly calling our unlisted phone numbers to collect a debt, YOU ARE just as much as the A***OLES that they ARE!!!  When your Identity gets stolen and the other A***OLES that loved to destroy your credit, YOU ARE UP S*** CREEK without a paddle or any help from ANYONE!!!!
I've been to the local police, the FBI, I've reported it to all the credit bureaus and I get the same answer; "Sorry, we can't help you!"  That Crazy outfit called "LifeLock" is a joke!!! They can't help you either!! So your life is screwed forever, by all!! You can't buy anything on credit. You can't rent anything!! And sometimes you can't even get a job, because of your bad credit rating. So, unless you've got a lot of money, your not gonna have much. Even if you need serious hospitalization, you're still up S*** CREEK!!!  OH! And BTW, my Identity was stolen back in 1989 and then again in 2007. I am being harassed to pay for stuff I never purchased on credit, because I haven't had any credit since 1990, 22+ years ago!!!  And I'm sure as Hell am not gonna pay for what the CROOKS have purchased in my name!

Please know that unless this debt collector has sent you a letter in the mail, with the information for the debt they are collecting, (name of original company that was owed and the balance owed), then they are not authorized to try and collect from you. These debt collectors will look at your credit report, looking for any unpaid and delinquent debts, then call you, and attempt to get you to pay them for the debt.

Here they are again, Portfoolio Recovery, demonstrating their own need to sober up and examine their business plan. Never in almost four years now has the phone been answered. Their chances of getting a bank number or an agreement or anything at all from us are less than zero, but still they keep on programming this phone number into their robodialer. They go for days without a peep, and then the phone rings twice in a day, and then they go away again....And why do they call? Have they ever verified that they are owed something by us? No, they have not. People, these jerks are nothing but fruit flies, shoo them away if they fly into your face, but otherwise ignore them -- do not answer, do not speak to them, do not fret over them. P.R. has een calling m also.On a J.C.Penny card that was never used.My allet got taken,i called J.C.P. told them what happened,they said no worries,and cancelled the card and acct.Now 9 years later here comes P.R. trying to collect,good luck guys,LOL!

You might want to contact your cellphone company and explain the situation about the calls your daughter is receving and request an unused number for her cellphone and specifically request that the new number NOT be associated with the old on in any way.  You do NOT want that recorded message that goes "The number you have reached has been changed. The new number is ...." to be placed on her new number.

They call my 13 year old daughter's cel phone EVERY DAY from a different number.

I assume the previous owner of the phone number must have had bad debt they are trying to collect on.  We have no unpaid debt
