Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

This person has called me almost everyday for 2 months, I have left several messages for him to give me the name and number of the person who I owe. He ignores my questions and just keeps saying I we 600 dollars. He also has called from 3 different phone numbers and tells me 2 call him back on a 855 number but no answer. Told me 2 get a prepaid Visa card and give him the number, I think not, he won't answer my question he won't get a dime from me.

I have received this call twice since Dec.....the 2nd time was today. I was told by this guy I owed a loan of over $600 (totals from the loan amount, interest and late fees). I asked what company did I owe this money to and he said he couldn't disclose their clients info. I asked so u just expect me to pay you over $600 for a loan I may not owe? I said well you know what I find that strange that the lady that called the first time gave me the information now why can't you. He said mam she wasn't suppose to do that she's new that's why I'm calling you now I'm her supervisor now how would you like to take care of this debt today? I told him I was not paying a dime until I had validity of the debt. He could not give me dates, a name if the company I owed, the original loan amount or anything. I asked why had'nt i been contacted via mail or email before now? He said it was their clients job to do that before it was sent to their office for arbitration. I even tried to go in their website with him on the phone, asked for the correct spelling and website address. My phone pulled up that the company didn't exist.  He acted as though he was putting me on hold to make sure he had the website address correct just to come back and tell me his boss told him the site was down; yeah right.....told me I was trying to use that as a stall tactic. I told him if that was the case every time he has put me on hold I could have hung up. Skipping to the end. He told me that since I was not willing to make pymt. arrangements that he would send my file back over to their client and they would place judgment against me which with court cost and all be about $2000 and have me served at my residence or place of employment.....crooks are all they are. I came across this on them because I tried to run a trace on their phone number.
