Just received cell phone bill and there is a 18 minute charge from connection made to this number.  Verizon will give 1/2 credit for charge but we didn't make it!!    Beware of these scams.

YOU called back an unknown number, that called you, without searching it first. That was the intent of the scam. DO NOT call back numbers you DO NOT know without searching them first. As you did call the number, there is very little you can do, except not to do it again.

I am a law enforcement officer and received this email today outlining this scam.... DON'T BE FOOLED!!!!!

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
One Ring Phone Scam
This type of scam that repeats itself in modified forms every few years is once again
spreading throughout the United States.
The scammers let the phone ring once, just enough to cause a missed call message to
pop up on victims' phones and then hang up. Victims who call the number back are
connected to a paid "adult entertainment service" located overseas.
Those unlucky callers are generally charged a $19.95 international call fee up front, plus
$9 or more per minute for the unwanted "service." (In some cases the scammers charge
only a few bucks to the victim's bill to avoid suspicion.)
The scam calls usually come from outside the United States, including from
numbers with area codes 268, 809, 876, 284 and 473.
Individuals should ignore incoming or missed calls from out-of-state phone numbers that
they don't recognize, and carefully check cell phone bills.
If you're really tempted to call back that number, at least pop the digits into Google first.
Sites like whocalled.us track complaints and questions about calls from specific
numbers, while other online directories can tell in which town and state the phone
number is registered.
(Intel Note: If you have voicemail, as pretty much everyone does today there is
usually no reason to call back missed calls from numbers that you do not
recognize, regardless of the area code from which they originated...If a caller has
something important to say, he or she can leave a message identifying himself or
herself (or send you a text message). Don?t let curiosity get the best of you!!!)

Prank Call
I received a call at 5:37am, found the missed call and dialed it back. It put me "on hold" with a realy cool song playing that kept telling me to hold for the next operater.  I stayed on hold for 7 minutes, then hung up... the number appears to be from out of this country Grenada, and I don't have any reason to get calls from there.I think this is going to be any expensive phone bill.473-456-1446

Rang me once at 6am. No message left. Apparently, these people call us and only ring once, hoping we will call back. Then once we do, we get charged for making a call to whatever "service" they have set up for dialing that number. For those of you who called them back, check your cell phone bills to see if that is true. this would help warn the rest of us.

They called me at 7:51 pm Feb. 3.  Phone rang once and then it hung up before I could answer it.  Obviously a scam that our government is powerless to do anything about and the phone company isn't interested in doing anything about.  We're on our own.

If you haven't taken care of it already, check your phone bill because it's charging over $19/min when you call it.

SCAM- The 473 area code has been linked to a form of telephone fraud known as the "one ring scam". The person perpetuating the scam calls the victim via a robodialer or similar means, sometimes at odd hours of the night, then hangs up when the phone is answered with the hope that they will be curious enough to call the number back. When the victim does this, an automatic $19.95 international call fee is charged to their account, as well as $9.00/min thereafter. Similar scams have been linked to Grenada (area code 473), Antigua (area code 268), Jamaica (area code 876), the Dominican Republic (area code 809) and the British Virgin Islands (area code 284).[1]  (copied from Wikipedia)

Prank Call
Do not return a call from this number or any number with a 473 or 268 (and possibly other) area code.

This is what is referred to as a "one ring scam".
They originate in the Caribbean islands (where there is no regulation) and the idea is to get you to call back.
Once you call back there may be extreme charges to your phone (one person had a $100 charge for a 15 second call), which is why they put you on hold with music.

More information here:

BTW this site needs to add "scam" to the call type options.

I just received a call from 473 456-1446.  I didn't recognize the number and it was listed from Grenada?  I have heard of calling scams where they are out of country calls and you are billed international rates if you try calling them back.  So, I didn't pick this up and googled the call number here.  I am glad that I did because it's a bad number based on everyone's experience.

this is a scam. Our local paper reported on it. They call your phone once, and hang up before you can answer it. Then when you call back you are connected to an overseas number that starts billing you at thousands of dollars per minute. You won't know it until you get your phone bill and then your phone company says it is too late to help you - you should have told us when it happened. DO NOT ANSWER OR CALL BACK ANY NUMBER YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE!!!!

I just got a call from this number. I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, and after reading some of the comments, I think this may be one of the numbers of the newest scam. They call hang up after one ring, and when you call back you are charged for the call.
