Found a charge on my phone bill and realized it came from this number. I don't remember calling this number and it does not seem to appear in my personal phone data. The call was for less than a minute and I was charged a $1.69, though this is a small charge I am angry I have to pay it for no reason. Beware of this number.

'One ring' phone scam sweeps the country

A new phone scam is sweeping the country, including East Tennessee.

Scammers overseas buy or steal lists of US cell phone numbers and use computers to mass dial. Your phone will ring just once-- long enough to generate a missed call. When you call back, the scammers charge you $20 for the call and another $9 for every minute you spend on the line.

The Better Business Bureau says this scam is more effective than some others, in part because it raises no red flags.

"There is no one trying to sell you anything. There is no one sending the wrong type of message or who has a foreign accent or doesn't speak very well. All of those things that we look for are absent," said BBB Spokesman Aaron Reese.

The BBB said the calls usually come from numbers with area codes 268, 809, 876, 284 and 473. One thing to look out for is where the call is coming from. Many victims say the call location was Antigua.

NBC News says if you're really tempted to call back, you should plug the number into Google first. They say sites like whocalled.us track complaints and questions about calls from specific numbers.

Call the number back and they can sock you with a large bill for an international call and the BBB is reporting the scam some charge you a monthly fee after you call back so please whatever you do, do not call this number back or any foreign number that calls your phone and hangs up after one ring

Got a "one ring call" on 1/30/14 @ 1:49pm from this number:  (473) 456-1946.

Didn't call back as I didn't recognize the area code.  Reverse look up put call from Granada so I never called back.  Good thing because today on the news I saw about the "one ring" phone scam.  

Got hit too. My phone has the number restricted for calling back, thank goodness.

A couple rings and then a hangup. No ID. Seems like many international numbers now try this scam. Do NOT call back! It may cost you a lot!

Got a call on my cell from this number, midnight last night! WTF? scared me to death...getting woke up in the middle of the night!?! weird thing was...my husband's cell rang exactly the same time from a different number all together! Whoever is doing these things NEEDS TO GET A REAL JOB and leave people who have a real job ALONE!

Called me at 10pm I did not pick up.

DO NOT call back any number that appears as 473 area code! It is an international call and it will be people looking to rip you off that answer the phone!

Received the call at 9:41 on Sunday night.

Got called on my cell just now at 1:10pm, phone only rang twice and then hung up, no voicemail message or anything.

Just got a call from this number rings twice and they hang up.

Got a call at 8:20 am, didn't leave a message but I have been getting calls on my cell from 268-762-0036 and 268-762-0035 so I wonder if they are all connected. I never used to get calls from these types of #'s and all of a sudden I am getting them all the time.

Got a call from this # at 12:12 AM... blocked it while it was still ringing, then searched the number online.
