Why don't you read the information here instead of just spewing?  My post from an hour before yours AND IMMEDIATELY ABOVE YOURS, at least for the past ten hours, explained in simple language what these calls are all about and why you shouldn't call them back.

I think I should consider moving over to the dark side.  It seems that whoever said, "[t]here's a sucker born every minute" [I know it is often attributed to P. T. Barnum, but many believe a competitor of his actually said it] may have grotesquely underestimated their prevalence.

Although certain specific area codes are mentioned in the article, it would be quite easy to generalize the scam to other countries in the Caribbean.

The latest crop of phone calls also seem to be slightly different from the scam being described in the article because the caller doesn't have any intention of talking to you.  All the scammer wants is that you get upset enough about the late night call that you return the call, never even noticing that it is from a foreign country outside the reach of US or Canadian laws.  When you return the call (at international rates), there may also a big surcharge to your phone bill that gets passed along to the scammer.

Even if there is no surcharge, if you have a cell phone that is able to dial international calls but without some sort of special discount plan, you may be charged about $2.00/minute if you call the number back.  That seems to be the current rate for calls to 1-473 "area code" Grenada numbers.

That's why either:
(1) you can't return the phone call, because even though you would otherwise be able to dial it like an ordinary long distance number, you phone company has a restriction on your placing international calls (which these are).  If so, consider yourself lucky.  Or,
(2) when you call back and get through, they keep you on hold for as long as possible to run up your phone bill and their profits, or just their jollies at finding easy marks, or whatever.

The scammers don't have to be associated with recent security breaches.  All they have to do is randomly dial a lot of telephone numbers in already-assigned area codes.  And they must be dialing a LOT of them based on the complaints logged to 800notes.  It probably doesn't cost them anything to dial, either, if the called party (you) doesn't pick up the call before they hang up.  

It only takes a small percentage of angry and/or curious people calling back for them to make a lot of money.  They don't even have to pay for real people to operate a call center -- it's all done by machines, outside the reach of US and Canadian law enforcement.

Called my wife's cell tonight at 10:35pm central.  Has Someone figure this out yet?

Yep. I've been getting multiple calls late at night from Grenada. All different numbers, a digit apart. I blocked all of the calls to date. Hopefully it will pass.

Received a call from 473-520-9790 at 12:57 on Saturday, Dec 21, 2013. Just one or two rings. The caller does not want the receiver to pick up the call.  I think the intention is for the receiver to call back and then a heavy charge may show up on the cell phone bill. I have seen this happen several years ago.

I reported the numbers 473-520-9790, 473-520-9713, 473-520-9763 and 473-520-9753 to the FCC. I'M TIRED OF THESE CALLS !!!!!!!!

i have received calls from this number along with 4735209795 numerous times lately. the caller usually hangs up before i have an opportunity to answer.

I have gotten a call from this number 473-520-9790 and 473-520-9709. I called my phone carrier (Verizon) and discussed all the nonsense that is going on about these numbers. They verified that it is from Grenada. Verizon welcomed the call and said they would turn it over to the fraud dept. They will block this number from this service. They recommended that anytime we get calls such as this that are not legit or harrassing to give then the info and the will investigate.

I just was awakened by this 14735209790 number it rang twice and no one was there all I want to know who this is and I think it is rude because it woke me up

Phone rang once from 473-520-9790 at 10:48pm.  Called back a day later.  The phone was hung up.
My husband was called once from 473-520-9759.  Called back and got the same response.

I have gotten a call from this number and the same number with the last 2 digits reversed. This is a copy of my post when I posted about the other number. Just sharing what I know. I will call my carrier, to let them know about this number as well.

Returned call, no answer but like others stated, techno type music and keeps saying to wait for operator. I didn't wait long and then hung up. At least it was a decent hour 3:14 pm.  Hopefully no cell phones charges will occur but it aggravates me that calls like this can be made and we can't do a thing about it.

After posting earlier, I decided to call my cell phone carrier (Verizon) to determine how much I might be charged for making a return call to the number. Rep indicated that I would only  be charged about 3 usage minutes but not any international fees. After telling her what I know and the information shared from this board, she did put a notation in my file about this number and sent it to the fraud dept. Rep indicated that it would be helpful if more people would call about these type of calls so that they could investigate and start "blocking" numbers from their service. So at least that is one way to stop those annoying middle of the night calls. Let's start calling our carriers to have them block these type of nonsense annoying calls.

I've got a misscall from this number too!!! I believe he is a scammer!!!!

Just got a call from that number at 11 pm ET..rang twice...I didn't answer.  

9709 just called, rang twice then hung up. Called back and verizon said it was unathorised.  Wonder what it could be ? a scam ?.

Got a call from 473-520-9790 at 3:17 PM, I did not answer. I saved to my contacts, then named it Never Answer and gave it a picture with yellow and black stripes and DANGER on it.  So, if it calls back I will know instantly who it is or I guess isn't.  

Look like Grenada is becoming the new Jamaica as a hot bed of scammers.  I guess all the information about the 876 Area Code scammers has cut into their revenues and forced them to move to Grenada.

Have gotten this call two times.

Received this call I think it is a scam call to see if my number is a real phone number and in use.
