I too received a call. I had signed up for a free agricultural magazine and they were verifying the information. They had correct information that I had entered online recently, however encouraged me to supply names for others in the company. I'm sure they get credit for each free subscription they push, because the advertisers pay based upon number of readers.
The caller was foreign and I'm sure from a call center overseas. The "dead air" calls people get are the predictive dialers often used. They automatically call multiple numbers, and when someone answers, the next available caller picks up.
The caller did his best to not anticipate my answers and he correctly documented each criteria he was asked to get, such as number of employees, type of agricultural business I was, etc.
So, not a crank call for me, just verification to get me my free business publications I had requested.
