Debt Collector
This company keeps calling me wanting my bank account numbers, where I live, where I work, etc. I have absolutely no debt and never have, so I'm not sure why they have my number and where they got it. The men on the other end hardly speak English, and when asked who they work for, they refuse to say. They, however, will quickly hang up if I threaten to "call the government and report them", which is silly. They also from time to time will make sexually harassing marks, telling me they're going to take me to bed with them, and f*** me so hard I will be unable to walk, and similar things.

Debt Collector
This company has called every day for the last 2 weeks looking for either a Scott Anderson, a Mark Anderson, or a Steven Anderson and I repeatedly tell them that no one by that name lives at this number and that they need to remove my number from their database. Than they want to know my name.. My moma did not raise a fool I don't give my name out to anyone who does not ask for me when they call. (that is like signing a blank piece of paper another thing I don't do).  Anyhow, how can I get these idiots to stop calling my home phone number?  I have told them and blocked their numbers (I guess I am going to have to go through the list and block every single number on the list.  I don't know any of these 3 people (even if I did they don't live here. I mean they call me at inconvient times and the guy tonight when I said no scott lived here simply hung up in the middle of my mid sentence.  So I guess these folks are not in Florida like the number said.  How can they get numbers in Va to look like numbers else where??? Isn't that in its self illegal?? Guess I will have to record them and then notify the State AG and maybe FTC as well.

Debt Collector
HEIR STOCK IS WAY DOWN SINCE THIS CAMPAIGN STARTED. FAR WORSE THAN THE DROPS ON WALL STREET. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Reverse boycott. Together we are destroying their cost/benefit ratio by consuming their service. Their legal model is less vulnerable than their business model. Individual efforts against their legal model have failed for years. This united effort against their business model is succeeding.

When a company can repeatedly call with the intent of getting money their customers can repeatedly answer or call back with the intent of not giving them any. They need people to pay with as little talk as possible. They don't want to talk with people who know they are never going to pay. Be all talk and no pay. Answer when convenient. Call back. Give no information. Verify nothing. Ask as many questions as you can. Answer none.

Don't ignore/block/report them. It doesn't work. These folks want you to ignore them for as long as you can stand to or until you give them something valuable like money or information. Ignoring them is being their good customer. Sending a cease and desist is giving information. It lets them know you are still alive and remain their good customer. Preparing to initiate unlikely individual legal battles is being their good customer.

Be their bad customer. Make them talk to you fruitlessly for as long as they can stand to or until they stop selecting you as their customer. These companies cannot spend seconds much less minutes on the phone with every person who will never send them a dime. But they don't know who that is. You do. That knowledge is power. Every second you can keep their staff on the phone will render their business less profitable giving them a reason to never call you again.

Calling will not reset your SOL. Making a partial payment will.

I like to ask general questions they should but usually won't answer, "May I have the name and address of your agent for service of process?" Calmly and slowly ask them to spell every word in the address. Read it back for verification. Control the pace. If they are rushing then politely ask them to slowly repeat. "Are you a corporation and if so in which state are you incorporated?" Repeat your questions when you don't get direct answers. When they won't answer a question ask, "Would you like to comply with the business and professions codes of your state?" That is usually the point when they hang up on me but if they say they want to comply then begin your questions again.

Repeat while you have the spare time. These folks have many victims and few operators. If everyone calls back but pays nothing the mass auto-dialer business model becomes unprofitable. Don't aide and comfort the enemy by ignoring them. Call! Have a nice long slow friendly chat! Make them hang up first.

Press 2 for Spanish.

For any business, customers who consume the most resources but don't pay (or otherwise add value) become the least desirable. Most businesses will stop (cease and desist) soliciting an undesirable customer. Those that don't stop remain knowingly vulnerable to the actions of their undesirable customers. Few companies can afford to let everyone take a piece of them whenever they want endlessly. For instance they must pay staff to answer everyone's telephone calls which can be placed at your convenience for the joy of it. Call and consume their operator time without paying or giving information. Be a bad customer. The worst customer. Inspire them to invoke their right to refuse you service by not soliciting you.

There are certainly enough victims to take down this company so ignoring/blocking seems downright Orwellian to me. Really? We're just going to passively submit and go with a block list or however we manage ignoring an endless stream of unwanted phone calls day after day? Hell no! Unite or remain conquered. Answer/return every call - become well practiced at keeping these folks on the phone - or count yourself not amongst the free.

Got a call from this number tonight. The caller ID came up as Portfolio Recovery Associates, a debt collector. This is the third number they have called me from. I don't know why their calling me. They always have an automated message whenever I answer saying to call such and such number back.

Really what their doing is illegal. Under the FDCPA, they have 5 days from the first time they call to send something in writing; telling you how much the debt is, the original creditor, and the information you would need if you wanted to dispute the debt their trying to collect. I never received any such letter, they just started calling.

Since I don't have an account number to reference, I will use my phone number and send a cease and desist letter. They picked on the wrong person to try and scam.

i just called them and asked them to remove the number from their database, and informed them that it is a cell phone.  They by law cannot call your cell phone and charge you for the call.  next time they call you let them know to remove the number they are calling, tell them they have the wrong person, do not give your name at all.  By law they have to remove wrong numbers, if they do call again they are in violation of the FCC laws.

JJ, They can't start the SOL unless you make a payment or agree to a new payment plan.  Just answering the phone won't start the debt. 1st, DON'T answer their calls if you are sure the SOL has expired, check your state.  2nd, if you want to answer, which you shouldn't, then deny the claim, again, DENY THE CLAIM.  Tell them you don't owe the money and have no clue what they are talking about.  If they call you a liar, they will, ask for written proof to be mailed to you and remind them to stop calling.  ASK for written proof to be mailed and you will look it over.  PRA will never send you anything, because if they do and it is incorrect they can be legal issues for harassment.  They fear courts on out of SOL cases more than harassment suits.  PRA has lost many cases for harassment once the debt was proven wrong and continued to call.  To sum it all up.  THEY DON'T have any of the files.  They know they can't legally make you pay SOL debt, unless you agree to pay it, even $1.  Don't let them talk you into if you pay as little as 10% to clear the debt, because they may stop calling, but it can now go back on your credit report for up to 7 years as a settlement and will hurt your credit score big time.  BIG TIME!  They buy this debt for pennies on the dollar, it is called ZOMBIE debt, but companies won't give them private information just in case they use it wrong and they end up getting sued.  So they will lie to get you claim the debt is yours and that way they can use that in court to collect.  But if the SOL has passed they can't do anything, but to try to trick you.  The sad news is that debt NEVER gets forgiven unless you pay it or by court order, bankruptcy.  The good news is that SOL in most states is between 4 -10 years, average being 7.  That just means they can't take you to court or file a 1099 on the debt once the SOL expires.  The newest technique being used by creditors is filing 1099 on new debt.  That way they can write it off on taxes.  But that also means the debt is PAID since you will have to pay taxes on the debt.  No more phone calls, but a tax bill.   Sorry for the long explanation.  But the best thing you can do is not answer the phone, if you do, just hang up immediately and block the number.  PRA has many numbers, but Comcast let's you block up to 12  and forward 12 numbers  Buy a Panasonic block phone  that let's you block up to 70 numbers.  You may also want to get a Google number and start using that number to block and get forwarded numbers.  Google let's you block unlimited amount of numbers.

Zombie debt collectors...usually trying to collect on OLD debt which is out of statute of limitations. Beware if you pay even one penny then you are acknowledging the debt and the clock starts again.  Next time answer and tell them you are required to let them know you are recording the call, tell them you want validation of debt MAILED to you with YOUR signature and you tell them by law you are giving them notice that they are to no longer call you.  When I did this, she said we can call when we want and I happily let her know that each violation would be filed with the Attorney General of my State. Just report these people and keep doing it, don't let them bully you!!!!

I can't believe they just called at 9pm!!!! I don't know about other states but mine has time limits that they can call!! I will double check but I think 9pm is past the time that is legal to call. Besides that I don't owe them anything. I have a form to fill out for my States Attorney's Office, filing it out tomorrow and sending it in!!! I suggest everyone else should do the same!

Portfolio Recovery calls daily. They claim they are trying to collect a debt from an old JCPenney card my husband had years ago. My husband's JCPenney credit card has long ago been paid off and canceled (back in the 1990s). He hasn't had a JCPenney card that he's used since the mid-1990s. Isn't there a statute of limitation on this type of thing? Why do they harass about an old retail store credit card that's been paid off years ago and hasn't been used since?
