Phony telemarketers cheat Ontario consumers out of millions of dollars each year. While you may not be able to avoid all unsolicited calls, you can learn how to spot the ones that may be a fraud.

1-900 Numbers
Any time you call a 1-900 number, be aware that:

?You are paying for the call ? often at a minimum charge of about $35.
?Area codes 1-900, 1-976 and 1-809 have a similar minimum charge.
?The promoter gets a portion of the money from each incoming call.
?Pay-per-charge numbers are used by legitimate businesses to charge their customers for information services; however, such businesses tell you about the fee upfront.
?One scam artist often sells to another the names and telephone numbers of people who?ve lost money.
?If you are concerned, you can order a call-blocking service from your telephone company that restricts your phone from making certain types of calls. Don?t confuse 1-900 numbers with toll-free numbers, which allow consumers to contact government and business offices without paying a long-distance charge. Toll-free numbers begin with area codes 1-800, 1-888 and 1-877.
Two 1-900 Number Scenarios

Scenario 1

His pager alerted the man to call an odd-looking number beginning with 1-900. He called, then sat through a long information message about health. Before he spoke with a live person, the line was automatically disconnected. Shaking his head, he hung up.

A few weeks later, he received a telephone bill for $35 with the 1-900 telephone number he had dialled earlier in the month beside the amount.

Scenario 2

The newspaper ad said to dial the 1-900 number splashed across the page in bright red print to win a trip to Mexico. "All you have to do is call!" It sounded simple enough.

The consumer decided to take the plunge. After all, what did he have to lose?

He dialed the number and waited patiently for the lengthy information message to end. But before he could speak with someone, the line was automatically disconnected. He hung up.

One month later, the man?s telephone bill showed a $50 charge for the 1-900 call he had placed.

900/976 pay-per-call services The service
A 900 service enables customers to connect to phone numbers that start with 1-900 for pay-per-call services. Pay-per-call services include live and pre-recorded services such as adult chat lines, vote casting, psychic consultations, horoscopes, soap opera updates, games, donations processing, sports scores, weather forecasts, translation, and medical, legal or government services.

These services are offered by third parties called 900 content providers. 900 content providers pay the telephone companies to use their networks.

976 service is also a pay-per-call service, which is provided only by Bell Canada in Ontario and Quebec.

Rules for 900 and 976 services are not exactly the same. For example, provincial laws about what collection agencies aren't allowed to do are part of the 976 service rules but not the 900 service rules. Contact your telephone company for more information on the specific rules for the 900/976 services you use.

Consumer safeguards
Charges must be identified
All advertisements for 900/976 services must indicate the charges for making a call.

When you make a 900/976 call by phone or a 900 call via the Internet, you must receive clear and complete information on charges and when they will begin.

If you access a 900 service via the Internet, you must also be presented with an "I Agree" dialogue box or other way to clearly indicate your explicit consent to proceed with the call.

Billing information and practices
Some 900 services bill customers directly. Others bill customers through a telephone company or another third party. No matter who bills you, when you receive a bill for calls to a 900 service, it must fully describe all charges plus the time, date and length of each call.

All bills for 900 service must follow the same rules concerning safeguards and disclosure of information.

First-time waiver
900 content providers and telephone companies providing 900/976 services must waive all reasonably disputed charges for first-time disputes with their customers. Companies must also tell these customers about the call blocking feature that prevents calls being made from their phone to 900/976 services.

Blocking service
Telephone companies providing 900/976 service must offer the call-blocking feature for free the first time it's requested. After that, the company can charge $10 for any further requests to add or remove the feature.

Check with your telephone company for details about call blocking for 900/976 services.

Information for consumers
Telephone companies providing 900 services must include information about these services on their Web sites. Residential phone directories must also include a reference to 900/976 services, including a statement that consumers may contact their telephone service provider for more information about them.

The reference must also remind customers that:

900/976 calls are provided to customers for a charge
call blocking options are available
customers may dispute the charges
In addition, the CRTC reminds parents to caution their children not to call a 900 service without permission

It's incredibly discouraging this can happen to so many innocent people.
We want to make it clear that our company is in NO WAY associated with Triton Global Business Services out of Canada.
Our company name is Triton Global Services, Inc. and we're located in Irvine, CA. We have received numerous calls from individuals who have received these charges and who want answers.

Hey Phoneguy,
I've been doing research into this company, and these are most definitely fraudulent calls.  You need to do more research before cracking off that kind of reply.

What I don't understand is that the CRTC, Bell and Allstream are all very familiar with this company and their scams,  My question is simple.  Why do these people remain in operation???  Access to Canada should have been blocked in 2011 at the very latest, yet here they are - still.

We ought to be protected against this, but the CRTC isn't doing there job!

You say we should take accout for our calls and that it is a sex line.   Well what is your answer when you didn't call and all the calls apear as a collect call to your home and Bell cut off your outgoing calls instead of incoming calls as so called protection to you.  I received 1000.00 dollars worth of billing  ALL collect.  Don't tell me it's my fault.  The number isn't even registered as an incoming call on my phone and it records all numbers dialed in or out.

Il me disse d'appeler Triton Global.

Je ne comprends pas ce qui m'arrive.

This number called twice within 1 minute and my son answered the phone. Each call cost me $39.95 as it was a collect call from some credit card company. He did not accept the charges yet I was billed for each call, the first lasting 3 minutes, the 2nd call lasting 5 minutes even though they came in 1 minute apart. $40 for a collect call ... charged through my phone company (who removed the charges when i called to find out what the charges were for) by a Company called Triton Global Business Services Inc in Calgary. How can charging $40 for a collect call be legal.

The same thing happened to me and I saw these charges from TRITON GLOBAL for a call from 519-489-0021, and told the phone company I would not pay for those charges.  They said they would refund my account and the company would then probably bill me.  I told my friend about this call and she then talked to someone she knew and they sent me the email informing me it was happening to other people as well.  I then phone back the phone company Bell and they told me to call phone busters and the local police.

Billed $39.95 on my Telus phone bill for a 9 min collect call @ 10:13pm.  We are a business and are only open 8-5 mon-fri.  Telus removed the charge and said that it was a thrid party billing and they would remove it but the company will be sending me a bill.  As noted in other posts the guy didn't care at all.  Rather said he would take it off but it was my problem. I said this is fradulant and no he had no reply for that other than once again telling me he would take it off my bill, but acting like it was a legit charge.

I received my phone bill with a charge of $39.95 from TRITON GLOBAL for a call from 519-489-0021 stated to last 13 minutes.  No one in this house accepted any collect calls in the middle of the night,  I called my phone company who reversed the charges, but didn't seem concerned that this was an act of fraud.

Two charges came up on our phone bill (BELL CANADA) each costing $45.10 from 519 489 0021 Triton Global St. Lambert. The calls were only 2 minutes apart but each lasting 5 minutes.  Looks like it's another fraud case so I will be contacting my phone company to make sure I'm refunded and that future calls from this number are blocked.

Thank you to all for your stories.

I had 29 calls charged to my phone bill, some 1 minute apart. Phone never rang that I am aware of and most were early morning hours. I would certainly know when 4 are 1 minute apart @ 2 am in the morning. Can't even say beware, as i indicated early the phone doesn't ring.  My phone provider has reversed all the charges and put a block on this number as they came in over a 4 month time frame starting in April.
