Yup, same story here and... I don't even own a timeshare!
No way to call them back, or get off of their list it seems.

"Are you ready to sell your timeshares?" was the automated message from this number to my cell phone.  I hung up without listening to the rest of the message...

pdrpam,

Unfortunately, I *am* on a do not call list.  I don't trust them to remove me if they are *already* ignoring a list that says they should not call me.  Knowing that they are insurance, and would be willing to "bend the rules" like this means I would *never* buy from them knowingly.  If I were to call them back, it would *only* be to identify which insurance company was doing this so that I would be sure to *not* buy from them through other means of contact, either.

It's like those spam e-mails.  They have a link on the bottom that invites you to click them if you want to be removed from their list.  They are Spammers!  Think about it.  So some of them actually do remove you.  Unfortunately, it is my experience that most of them send you *more* spam, since they now know that they have not hit a *dead* e-mail address.  Much the same with phones.  Many people set up caller ID to reject certain callers.  If you call them back, they were probably calling you with an autodialer, which does not know if the call did not go through if set to just not ring on the other end.  By calling them back, now they *know* that is not the case.  You have just become a "live" number, and if they are networked, expect 10 more spam callers because of it.

For that reason, call back from somewhere they can't trace back.  If you have the ability to block caller ID, do that first and *don't* give them your number.  Instead, get the address to send a *written* notification.  It is the *only* sure way to get them to comply.  With sending them *written* notification, they can become subject to a whopping $16,000 per violation.  That generally gets their attention.

Yes, you can just *ask* them verbally to stop calling.  You really think that works?  Many of these companies are scum.  There are some legit companies.  Don't count on that with the one you are dealing with, no matter how slick smooth and polite the person is that you are talking to.  They *know* they can play the "he say, she says" game and skate.  Tell them in writing and they can't skate.

I suggest that only for the *really* bothersome ones though.  Send it certified.  They have 24hours after they get notification (and by sending certified and keeping the tracking number, you know exactly when they get it) so watch them after they get the notice.  I'd give them 2 days, just to make sure they have *no* wiggle room left, and if they are stupid enough to call again, report them immediately!  They typically make an enormous number of calls every day.  If they call you twice, report them twice!  Make them pay double!  Drive them out of business!

BTW, while writing this, this number called back again, which is typical, and *also* why I say if they call you twice, report them twice!  In my case they are trying to sell my timeshare for me.  I have not had a timeshare for over ten years now.  So I add this company to one of my spam callers on my cell phone, and I listen for the distinct ring for those calls.  I hear it, and know to ignore them!  I have to change the ring to something more distinctive, though.  I am thinking of using the Monty Python "Spam Song" Ringtone.  That one would clearly be known by me immediately!

And the upside of not calling back but putting them on a spam list on your phone is this:  Those scum get to pay for *more* dead calls.  Sure, it is not much, but it still could help get rid of some of them!
