the exact same thing happened to me yesterday. this guy isn't bothered about more info on the car or the price he just would like your email address for your pay pal account! his email is richylew01@gmail.com...

and today, I received a message from a 'luiz rafael' asking if im still selling my car. I never thought it could possibly happen twice in 2 days but it has, as soon as he said he can only pay via pay pal I knew it was the tw@t again! this time his email was luizrafael234@gmail.com. He also said he is from france, so how could he see my gumtree post on the uk site?!

Be aware of him, he sends you a text asking to be emailed, his English isn't the best & he says he can arrange for collection

Richard Lewendon. He isn't concerned about the price, was very non-specific in his reaction to my notes on the vehicle condition. Claims to be a marine engineer at sea, paying by Paypal and buying the car as a surprise for his son. Wouldn't give an address for the transfer document, and now asking for help to pay via Western Union for a pick up. Last emails illiterate and the pick-up bit made me suspicious.
Thank God I checked on google. Thanks to all of you for putting up your stories.

Tried it on with me, an 18 year old whom I am selling a car for quite a bit of money. He tried a very convincing tactic with me. He was under Richard Lewendon and wanted me to pocket out £400.00 to the post office to a certain address to the Western Union and tried to send me email messages making out that he was PayPal. On the fake emails that he sent me pretending to be PayPal, it said the outstanding payment of £4,600.00 was pending and it would only come through once I paid the £400.00 to the Union. I looked on my real PayPal and there was no transaction from this guy what so ever. If there isn't on the main paypal page, then it's defiantly fake. Same as your story, out at sea, marine engineer, present for his son, convinced me to make paypal. But he should of taken thought of my email which said "1995", which is my age. Seriously trying to scam an 18 year old is sick, but yet stupid because the younger generation is hot on internet security. Had some fun when I sent him a funny response back. Unfortunately I'm studying internet security. I am from England and he saw my ad on gumtree. Anyway thanks a lot for this post and it's sad to think he's been doing this since august or probably way back. People need to be warned!

same thing again happened to me today via gumtree in belfast ni, got a message that the guy was interested in my car etc etc he was at sea wanted to get a surprise gift for his son, seems ok and seeing paypal is meant to be secure all looks ok initially. until he starts to mention extras on top for a pick up agent, can you help him etc, anyways this is a SCAM!!! he is was under the name of richard lewendon this time. ridiculous behaviour! seems a shame that he hasn't been caught when this is clearly ongoing, transnational criminal activity affecting many people. thank god there is some wit not to follow through with this but it is reasonably convincing. he's using the email address richylew01@gmail.com.

Yep John White wanted to buy a set of wheels from me - as a surprise for his son. He is a marine engineer and was at sea so he would have to use paypal. He mentioned how to set up a paypal account if I didnt already have an account, but supplied no link. He then mentioned he would have a pick up agent, which was just the oddest term and made me stop and say, "Wait a minute, something doesn't smell right here". That and the overall feel of the email felt canned or non specfic to the item being sold. I did some checking more for fun than anything else since i knew this sale wasnt happening. Found the text messages where from 3852336773 a Utah exchange which made no sense why someone from Utah would want a set of wheels from Louisiana. Shipping would be crazy expensive and driving down for pick up would be cost prohibitive as well. Any way if you got a letter for an item on craigslist that sounds like this one, its a scam.

Biggest bunch of idiots I've run into.

While responding to a poorly worded text message regarding a Craiglist advertisement indicating he wanted to pay me my asking price of $7,500 for used tractor, no questions asked,I asked the perp if I could call him since "he was on an off shore oil rig and the satelite reception was down."  He responded that he would call me.  The phone rang in less than five minutes and the caller spoke such limited English I could not carry on a conversation.  I hung up.  This, however, did not deter him.  For more than two days he continued to text.  I must admit that since it was on the weekend and I had nothing better to do, I really had a comical exchange with him.  I even acted as if I didn't understand his instructions to send freight money of $1,300 to Nicole Mathews in Florence, SC.  Instead, I told him I had taken the tractor to Western Union and they would not ship it!!  (This upset him highlyl!!)   Anyway, my last text message to him is as follows:   "Are you SURE you want me to send your money to Ms. Matthews?  It looks like these Matthews' girls may be running a scam from 143 Laurel Ln., Florence, SC 20506. I would hate for you to lose your money to one of these b*****ds running scams off Craigslist advertisements. Here's the link you should visit before I send you the $1300 to that address. http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/2405809183."   I've not heard anything else from him

Just got a text from this clown a few minutes ago. He is good with the price, and wants to send me a certified check for the full purchase price!!! I'm so excited, because this guy has to be legit... Right? Not like the guy that was gonna pay me last week from paypal. Why do these guys think they can actually get away with this stuff?

Omar,  Its a scam.  I got another one his name was JEHAN. number 724-603-5343.  I plan too post similar on that number too.  These guys need to be stopped or at least people made aware.  Unfortunately not many people take the time to Google a number. They are like wow I have a buyer and that's all the care about and then gut stuck with out of pocket cash and no product that the scammer can then resell

**********FRAUD ALERT**********
Not sure what this guys game is. He goes by John White or John Hunter.  He tried to scam me on a Craigs list posting however he picked the wrong guy.  I'm in IT, done networks, & network security, plus teach internet fraud at the Grad & undergrad level. He looked legit as he insisted on using PayPal to pay for the transaction. Where the red flag came in was he upped the amount in my PayPal account by the shipping charges, still sounds legit, even sent me what looked like e-mails from PayPal, and links that actually took me to PayPal, except the important one that took me to my actual account. The e-mail had a screen capture of what my account would look like with actual money in it but my sign on showed nothing. Also he interchanged the $ with the British Pound Symbol. A couple of more red flags. Then wanted me to wire via Western Union the freight charges to a pickup Agent.  Nicole Matthews, 143 Laurel Lane, Florence SC 29501. This is a legit residence and suspect this is an intermediary in the US working with this guy.  I already knew that PayPal does not have any arrangements with WU. Reported to local police, PayPal, and NWCCC (Natl White Collar Crime Center)
