Telemarketer
Left a mostly-unintelligible message and said something that was probably about the IRS, although even that wasn't clear. If he wants his scam to work, he's going to have to speak English well enough for his marks to understand what he's asking them to do.

My wife received the same message: I am calling from the IRS, that's the Internal Revenue Services hotline, my division is 585-283-7013 and then he repeated the number. Don't try to disregard this message and do return my call as soon as possible, before any legal action is taken. We have to talk about a discrepancy in your income tax. Good bye and take care.

If they're going to run a scam, you'd think they'd at least get someone that can speak English.  This "Ben Wilson's" English is about the poorest I've ever heard.

I just received the call too. Ours was from, Dan Wilson, with a pause before stating his name and a very heavy Indian accent. His message was...I am calling from the IRS, that's the Internal Revenue Services hotline, my division is 585-283-7013 and then he repeated the number. Don't try to disregard this message and do return my call as soon as possible, before any legal action is taken. We have to talk about a discrepancy in your income tax. Good bye and take care.

Thanks for posting these, as I won't be bothered with this now.

I got a called from this number on SUNDAY at 9:30AM. The person with Indian accent identified himself as PETER BROWN and gave me a 60 seconds long message threatening me that the was an issue with my tax. The same guy called me on Monday at 7:45AM with the same message. I called him back and he started threatening me with the tax things. I quickly and politely asked him for my SSN so that I can verify that he is from the IRS. Guess what? He told me that he can't because it is illegal and private. So, I asked him just to give me the last four or middle two number of my SSN? He got PISSED and then hang up. Just be careful. Do NOT give out your info.

BTW: Thanks to DINETTA and all of you here to start reporting this scam. That is why I posted this so that others don't have to deal with these nonsense threats.

I have received a similar message on my answering machine last night.  When my husband called back this morning on this number 585 283 7013, a man with an Indian accent answered as IRS.  As soon as my husband said "you have left a message on our answering machine" he hung up the phone immediately.  Several minutes late he called again and I picked up the phone, the same person ask my name.  When I interrogated who was he, he hung up the phone immediately again. It seems a scam but he is a real person.

The first time ever got such a call I called 911 because I freaked out. The police officer from our local town educate me on the phone scams that come along text season specifically because a lot of people are in that scared of the IRS to start. When it came for him to conclude the one hour education and leaving I asked him if he will file a report he said it's up to you but I can just tell you know from his personal experience that whenever they file phone number scam such as these it does not go beyond one or two offices and then it is stopped . He said that the FBI are the ones who usually follow cases that deal with such nonviolent crimes and that there is a special office for such crimes but he mentioned that the FBI are very efficient with Internet crimes more then telephone calls as the verbal communications and connections are harder to track. Again I'm just conveying what the local police officer told me from his experience of dealing with me a few weeks.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Same deal, some guy with a thick Indian accent called me twice (name was Mike Carter), claiming I had some gap in my income tax, which I haven't filed yet this year.  Left a number 585-283-7013 to call back.  I called back, his mailbox was full so I couldn't hear what information he wanted, but I'm going to call back once his mailbox clears up so I can hear what kind of scam he is trying to pull.

We received a call from this number at 9pm last night, then again at 7:30am this morning.  Person says his name is Roger, that he is calling from the IRS and our attorney call-back is "extremely time sensitive".  When he called this morning 7:30am, he was speaking a foreign language on the voice mail.

No doubt, it is a scam.  The IRS is required to send you a letter for any debt they think you owe.

Received this call at my office asking for me by name; said he was from the IRS.  We had a bad connection, so he became frustrated because he had to call back three times.  Sounded like telemarketers in the background.  I know that if the IRS needs to contact you, they do so my mail.  Finally told him we had a bad connection and hung up.
