this guy threatens if he doesnt' hear from you or your attorney.. he says his name is "officer Jason Miller" of course I am not going to answer, and I blocked his number, unless he has another one.. since he does threaten people I would think it would be against the law to continually call.. I am not gonna give my real name, if they look at this website they will then have a name to go on.. so I sign myself.. Mickey

Received call from 585-283-8941, caller ID just shows the phone number 2x and no actual caller name. I did not answer, however a message was left claiming they were the IRS and that I needed to contact them immediately to clear up a problem, then they said again that I needed to contact them or have my lawyer contact them and if I didn't I would not like the consequences. I realize it is a scam and also realize there must be several out there who feel threatened or scared and do send money.

More than 20,000 taxpayers have been targeted by fake Internal Revenue Service agents in the largest phone scam the agency has ever seen, the IRS inspector general said Thursday.

Thousands of victims have lost a total of more than $1 million.

As part of the scam, fake IRS agents call taxpayers, claim they owe taxes, and demand payment using a prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. Those who refuse are threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver's license, said J. Russell George, Treasury inspector general for tax administration.

Real IRS agents usually contact people first by mail, George said. And they don't demand payment by debit card, credit card or wire transfer.

The inspector general's office started receiving complaints about the scam in August. Immigrants were the primary target early on, the IG's office said. But the scam has since become more widespread.

Tax scams often escalate during filing season, George said. People have been targeted in nearly every state.

"This is the largest scam of its kind that we have ever seen," George said in a statement. "The increasing number of people receiving these unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS is alarming."

The script is similar in many calls, leading investigators to believe they are connected. The inspector general's office is working with major phone carriers to try to track the origins of the calls, the IG's office said.

The scam has been effective in part because the fake agents mask their caller ID, making it look like the call is coming from the IRS, George said. In some cases, fake agents know the last four digits of Social Security numbers, and follow up with official-looking emails.

They request prepaid debit cards because they are harder to trace than bank cards. Prepaid debit cards are different from bank cards because they are not connected to a bank account. Instead, consumers buy the cards at stores, and use them just like a bank card, until the money runs out or they add more.

I received an harassing VM an then a call from this number. The man had an Indian accent stating he was calling from the IRS and stated that I owe money for the past three years. When questioned why I never received any notice he couldn't answer the question. When asked how do they know they're calling the right person he couldn't answer - he didn't want to give me my address to confirm it was me or even my SS or the last four #'s to confirm it was me not even my date of birth. He got agitated and threaten to call the cops to have me arrested,  and freeze my accounts. He didn't want me to hang up the call. When I did he would keep calling. I had asked him for his badge #, then the office address he was calling from & he gave me the address to the Rochester NY IRS office. I went online and searched the official web site of the IRS and that location the # was different by the last 4 numbers - I had put him on hold and called the office and I had gotten an answering machine stating your calling the IRS office and it would go through different options on the answering mahine on how they can help with any issues anyone may have if any with your taxes, and that they were close for the day. When I had called his # back there was no answering machine or identification of that this was the IRS office. Until I stated i had received a VM from this number. mind you the VM was unclear all i heard was that they were calling from the IRS office and they were looking for me. didn't mention my name in the VM just that they were looking for me. It was not a professional and clear message it was also an Indian accent man.  This man was a fraud saying his name was Gary Jordan. Look out for these people. Also when asked if I could pay off the amount that I supposedly owe he didn't want none of my personal info - like a check or credit card he wanted me to get a prepaid card and then give him that #. You know right there and then he didn't  want to be traced. I hung up the call and he kept calling after hours. Please find these people an lock then up.

A gentlemen, with a heavy accent called me, claiming he was calling me on behalf of the IRS, was threatening me with having committed tax fraud and said I would need a lawyer to represent me against illegal allegations..  First he said he was from the Graham Investigative Industry and then from the IRS.
When I called him back and said he really needed to identify himself properly because I had looked up his company/agency and it seemed not to exist, he hung up on me.

Of course one's heart goes wild when you get a call like this, especially if you are totally honest and have been on your taxes, but please be aware of this man.

An Indian man called 7:10am claiming to be James Cook from some division of the IRS. He said my info was wrong and he needed me to call another person named Officer Dexter Cruise at ext 359. He gave a "case number", and when I asked for the address he said they are in Rochester, NY. He gave me a partial street address 405 NW 129 Rochester, NY and refused to give the rest of the street address or the zip code. I know the laws according to the Fair Debt Collection Act. When I told him he was committing a crime by calling me before 8:30am and that he is legally required to give me whatever information I request, he started to mumble. I asked for someone else that speaks English, and he said "I have to go" and hung up. When I got off the phone, my relative told me that they heard kids in the background when they initially picked up the phone. I did a google search and can't find anything about this number or the partial address.

A guy with thick Indian Accent called my work and asked for me using my nickname- he told my secratary that I needed to return his call, Joseph Martin with the IRS. If I didn't return his call in a timely manner I would be arrested. I called local IRS and they said this is a SCAM and they would never contact by phone only a Certified Letter. I have blocked this number from my personal line, but cannot from my work.

Same guy called.Thick Indian accent. Could not understand most of what he said. Identified himself as from IRS. Finally, I hung up on him. He called back immediately and left a message on machine with mention of "court", "attorney", "income tax", "before any legal..." (couldn't understand but bits and pieces of message).  Said he would document that I had "turned down" his call, then made that same bizarre remark, "Best of luck" in a tone as if I would regret not speaking with him. He left this # and said he was calling from the IRS department, Central Ave. Services.  He's obviously out to scam and get personal info.!

I received a call/vmail this morning (i did not pick up) initially from this number 585-283-8941:
Person had very heavy East Indian/Sri lankan? accent (basing on my personal experience with people i know from these regions). Said is name was "joseph ?? and beyond that i could only understand bits and pieces of which the net was: he stated my first and last name (got the first name wrong) and said he was from the IRS and i needed to call back asap to avoid any legal ramifications and left the number above (it was very bizarre as he wished me 'good luck' at the end).
THEN, about 40min later, i get a call/vmail from this number 866-978-8582:
This man had less of an accent (could better understand his english) from the same region above and stated:
He stated my name and said his name was "Albert Lewis from the Tax Auditing dept of the IRS..had recvd legal claim notice against me and I need to call back asap to avoid being arrested and taken to court". He repeated the call back number 866-978-8582.
I did NOT nor will i be calling back..hope this helps others..Best.

Person with an Indian accent (Asian Pacific not Native American), identified himself as James Cook and said he was with the IRS and that I needed to call "Officer Baxter Cruz" at this number regarding an important tax issue. I asked him several questions that were well off script and he fumbled and stammered to come up with a response
