Criminals (such as these), could care less about the time or how many times they call.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

Just woke up by this phone number.  No one answered when I said hello.  Wasn't totally awake at 7:35 am on a Saturday.  I called back and the person who answered stated he was from the IRS and needed me to give him my phone number!  Strong accent.  Very tired and grumpy about being woken in this fashion.  Definitely a scam.  Caller id just stated Rochester NY.

I got a call at 11:44 am PST on January 10, 2014 from an individual named "David Brown."  He had what appeared to be an Indian accent.  He claimed he was calling from the "IRS Department of Internal Revenue Service."  He asked if I was aware of my "tax issues."  I said "no" and asked what issues he was referring to.  He said I should call "Kevin Johnson" at "585-697-3465" for details on the issue (he appeared to be in a rush to get off the phone).  The number he gave for "Kevin Johnson" was the same number he was calling from.  (The call registered from Rochester, NY.)  I tried calling multiple times and could not get through.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to post to this board and help others out!

While was out of the house I received a voice mail on Jan. 10, 2013, from 1-585-697-3465.  The message began with a loud screeching noise similar to but not exactly like that you get if you dial a fax machine. The caller had a thick accent that sounded Indian or Pakistani to me.  The caller said his name was David Bell; he said the call was for Angela _______(my last name) [my name is NOT Angela, and I do not know anyone with my last name called Angela]; he insisted that Angela or her attorney of record return his call; he repeated the number twice; he stated that the issue was extremely time sensitive; he stated that there was a "deficiency" in her IRS filing.

I have received phone calls the past two days from 585-697-3465 stating that the person (Matt Jones) is from the IRS and that I need to call him before legal action is taken.  I know this is a scam and want to block this number from calling me.

I called the federal tax fraud number listed on the IRS website. They told me the number has been reported.  They were rather brusque about it so they must get a lot of this (or they're just grumpy).  I hope everyone else reports it so it gets taken care of.  The guy called back again.  I'm blocking the number.

My mom is getting the exact same calls repeatedly and is very upset.  We all need to report to the FBI, local police, and IRS.  The funny part is that when she calls to report this to the IRS, she keeps getting hung up on.  It appears that they don't care.  But this is probably a common occurrence.

I just got a call from 585-687-3465 and this heavily India accented man tried to tell me that I owe the IRS money and that I needed to return this call to a Kevin Johnson because I have serve issue with the IRS.  I told him that I didn't have any issues with the IRS and he told me that I had to speak to this Kevin person, when I tried to call back the phone was busy.  Does this guy really think that I'm that stupid that I would believe his load of crap.  This is a total scam and my call registered from Rochester, New York.

Keep calling back! they will eventually answer! I work in a call center and an Allen Parker with a steep Indian accent called, got frustrated and hung up. I called back to get a Kevin Johnson also with an accent. I told him I wanted to give him my credit card information and he didn't know what to do with it. Not sure what kind of scheme they are pulling, possibly wanting to get naïve person on the line.

I got this call this morning.  Called back and got "Alan Spencer".  I was reading this thread as he was giving me his speech. I informed him that I knew what he was doing was a scam and that I was going to call the FBI.  He hung up immediately!  I tried reporting this to the IRS, but got lost in the phone tree.

I also received a call from this number. I let it go to voice mail since I did not recognize the area code. It was a man with a very strongIndian accent he really messed up pronouncing my name, but it happens. I tried calling back several times since I don't want trouble with the IRS but it was busy or it would ring then go to a busy signal. The messages stated that I or my attorney needed to call for some tax discrepancies. He stated his name was Peter Collins.( Collins if more of a European last name I would think and not an Asian name, but what do I know...lol ) I will disregard. I'm sure if the IRS wanted to talk to me they would send a letter as well.
