This is a scam.  They act like a charity -- and they're not -- then try to bully you into paying them off with threats of collections, legal action, and fraud investigations.  They have been barred from contacting residents of Iowa, and currently are under investigation by several state AGs and the FTC.  If they contact you, notify your state's AG immediately.

---- Correcting my typo from recent post (Message above)

I got a call from American Disadvantage Handicapped Workers INC, Sandra Garcia is the name she mentioned. and said that I ordered 2 bottles of cleaning product in 2011 and I didn't pay the invoice attached to it. The call was from anonymous caller id, and when I asked her why you calling from anonymous id, she said if my caller id said ADHW you won't have picked up the call and if you don't pay I am sending it to collections. and the cost would be 239, but if I pay now it would be 179.87 and we will close your account with zero balance. I couldn't understand that this is not my paying habit, and since I didn't want my credit to affect, I paid it and immediately started investigating on them and I find many blogs and complaints about ADHW. I don't know where to go and what to do, but I will try to complain Attorney General, Consumer Affairs, etc. She gave me her name, number. 562-867-6119

Des Moines Register 10/12/13

DES MOINES, Iowa ?A Polk County judge has ordered a Phoenix-based telemarketing company to stop contacting Iowa residents with misleading information.

The Attorney General's Office announced Friday that American Handicapped & Disadvantaged Workers Inc. and its owner, 62-year-old Adli Najib Dasuqi, were ordered to stop telephone sales with pitches focused on helping disabled workers.

The company marketed light bulbs, trash bags and other household items. A consumer fraud lawsuit filed in September by Attorney General Tom Miller said the company's callers claimed to be disabled and mislead Iowa residents, including many older individuals.

The order covers both telemarketing calls and charitable solicitations.

The company, which denies wrongdoing by agreeing to the ban, has also been ordered to pay $10,000 to help refund some consumers.

I am unsure if this is the same number they called me from---there are several---but they continue to call and harass us for a payment that was already made and cleared the bank..now threatening collection.  I also get notices in the mail...I have repeatedly tried to call them back but they never answer the phone....the last person that contacted me was a Brenda who claimed she was from the corporate office.  I have repeatedly asked them to stop contacting us to no avail.  These people are as fake as it gets.

Go to the Arizona Attorney General's office, Office of Consumer Complaints, and report their tactics. Also send them copies of any documents that AHDW have sent you. Send the complaint by email and by US mail. They got them to stop their harassment of me and to take me off their call list.

It took me a few months to get mine. And yes they are a scam. I would get a new credit card and cancel the one you have now because if they can they will start taking money out of your account. Yes it is screwed up that they exploit people's kindness. But they do.

In my case the man told me he was in a wheel chair and blind and he couldn't do much of anything and the only money he made was a commission of the sales he made. He was trying to sell me four light bulbs.

I know for a fact that these people are scammers. I was one that got suckered into their bull crap. And now I have contacted the consumer protection branch of my state government. I had agreed to pay 100 dollars after being told that they'd received two 200 dollar donations from me for two years running. I had every intention of telling the supervisor that I had only agreed because I'd felt bad for the man I talked to and that I was sorry to inform her that I could not give them a donation. I didn't get that chance. Granted I should've just hung up on her, so that part of it is totally on me. After she hung up I realized that there could have been no way that they had received two 200 dollar donations from me because I had never given it and I had never heard of them before. When my husband got home, I asked him if he remembered sending them a payment the first year we were married and he said no. It was him who jumped on the internet and figured out we'd been had. I ended up receiving the package, and I never opened it, took it down to the post office and sent it back. Now they are trying to tell me that I'm being put under collection, when there is no reason for it. The definition of DONATION is a VOLUNTARY gift as of money, services and ideas to a worthwhile cause. VOLUNTARY being the key word here. So if I, or anyone else decide that we've changed our minds and don't want to or can't give a donation for whatever reason, we should not be obligated to give that donation anyway. I was told by the woman I talked to with the Consumer Protection people to dispute the debt, remind them that I returned their package without ever opening it because I never wanted it to begin with, tell them I WILL NOT PAY FOR IT and suggest that they take me off of their solicitation list. Be warned, don't make the same mistake I did. Don't fall for the bull crap. The only reason I did is because I've never dealt with people like this. I'm only 22 right now and very apparently a lot more gullible than I thought. If I get another call or letter threatening to put me under collection I have been told to call the Consumer Protection people again and let them know so that THEY can contact these people. If that doesn't work, my husband and I will be talking to our lawyer and legal action will be taken if that's what it takes.

They called and asked for a donation of 29.95.  I asked that I be sent some information on this organization and specifically a break down on where the money went.  Although they both tried to get me to do a pay now using various means, I insisted on information to be sent first.  Both men agreed to send information which I never got.  From that point forward I have recieved bills, delinquent notices, harassing calls daily, hangups and threats of collection.  It's a shame but this is not a reputable organization.

Cindy,  What did you do?  Someone from HDHW called me today and claimed that I had ordered from them in december of 2012 and that now it was past due and they were going to turn me over to Collections if I didn't pay over the phone by credit card.  I refused and they said they would take me to court.  What should I do?

CALL CAME FROM 1-562-866-1612 IN CALIFORNIA . . .

I GOT A CALL FROM DISADVANTAGE HANDICAPPED WORKERS OF AMERICA SAYING I OWED A BILL FOR TRASH BAGS FROM DECEMBER 2010. I DID REMEMBER ORDERING TRASH BAGS (FROM LIFELINE INDUSTRIES) BUT NOT AT THIS TIME., BUT NEVER FROM FROM DHWA. AFTER ALMOST 2 YEARS THIS COMES ABOUT. . . I KNOW I DON'T OWE DHWA ANY MONEY. THE LAST TIME (LAST YEAR) WHEN LIFELINE INDUSTRIES CALLED ME I TOLD THEM THAT I DIDN'T WANT ANY MORE AND THEY NEVER MENTIONED THAT I OWED A BILL.

I AM WAITING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THEY SAID THEY WERE TURNING ME OVER TO A COLLECTION AGENCY.

A Mr. "Jackson Montgomery" of DHWA (Disadvantaged & Handicapped Workers of America) -- has been calling us lately and is now threatening to turn us in to a collection agency by 5:00 p.m. today (June 5, 2012) if we do not pay an alleged payment due, plus late fees for garbage bags ordered -- from 2 years ago!!  WHAT???  When we asked for proof and verification of the order and amount due, he said he could not supply that information unless we give him our CREDIT CARD NUMBER, first! Of course we did not, and said we would have to investigate the legitimacy of this demand and threat. We now have come to find out that many other "customers" have been victimized by this same group -- and specifically by "Jackson Montgomery," claiming he represents the collections dept. of DHWA.  I surely appreciate others of you who took the time and energy to alert us to this scam organization. Thank you!!!

I worked at AHDW for about 3 years.  I can say with certainty that all orders were verified by a 2nd person and confirmed before being sent.  I know this personally because I was the person who did it.
When calling back a customer who agreed to purchase a product I always stated that it was not a donation, it was an order.  I also would always say there would be in invoice inside of the box and you must send your payment back within 3-5 days after receiving the item(s).  If the customer did not say yes to all of these things I would cancel the order.  As the verification supervisor I had the top collection rate in the country out of the 10 offices AHDW had at the time.  It was also my job to ensure that no lies were being told about donations or gifts.  If a customer states they only want to make a donation I would immediately cancel the order and politely end the phone call.

Prior to my time as the verification supervisor I worked as a sales person.  Yes, some people there do lie about why they work there, but not everyone.  I can honestly say that in the few years of being there I can only think of three "long term" employees who blatantly lied about a handicap on a regular basis. Most of the better sales people never mention having their own handicap at all and just say where they are calling from.  Instead of relying on lies most of the top salesmen will just about how the product helps out by providing them with work credits, which is true, without going into details about specific people or disabilities. The company does provide a script which is to be read verbatim to newer employees.  Whether or not the manager of a particular office pushed the use of this script depended on the office and manager.  I've personally seen it both ways.

AHDW employees are paid based on a the number of "units" sold per week.  The higher the order cost the more units the salesperson gets.  For example if you bought $90 worth of trash bags, the salesperson would get 10 units.  If the salesperson has a good collection rate (60%+) he/she will make at minimum $15 for that order.  So in all honesty, your $90 is doing a good thing for a person who in the majority of cases would never have the chance to earn that kind of income anywhere else due to their disability or disadvantage.

Many of the veteran sales people had customers who they would call and never even talk about products or disadvantages.  Just friendly conversation followed by the customer offering to buy xx of dollars worth and send whatever.  They would know the sales person by voice and name.  In some cases these customers will known the sales person for 5+ years.  You would be amazed at the way some of those calls go. These older customers didn't care about handicaps or products, they just knew the person they were helping had problems and were good people.  I can honestly say that 95% of the people who work for AHDW are good people who just have problems functioning normally in some form or fashion.

While many may not be handicapped physically. Mentally or emotionally most of them are in need of some form of help.  Whether they be mental disabilities, addictions, or convictions everyone who works there is not what you would call a regular functioning member of society.  I can honestly say that while the prices are outrageous, you really are helping that person out who calls you. They are making a decent living, legitimately without government assistance.  How that person spends that decent income... well that's another discussion.

The companies listed in the post above are NOT affiliated with AHDW in any shape, form or fashion.  They never were and never will be.  I can promise you, this is the most true and factual post in this entire thread.  As someone who can be considered an AHDW "vet" having worked at three offices over a span of three years and knowing most of the long term employees rather well on a personal level you can be assured this is as inside as it gets lol.

To end this post,  I think AHDW has closed its doors after almost 15 years.  I have tried calling a few of those offices trying to get in touch with an old friend who worked there last we talked and none of the numbers had an answer.  Thats how I stumbled upon this entry, I was looking to see if they had a new number.

I worked for this company for about a week.  They are a legitamate company, but they definately border on the boundaries of being illegal (And in some ways they might be breaking the law).

1)  They are not a charity.  They are a for Profit company.  They sell common household items at vastly inflated rates (For example, 8 lightbulbs for $99).  By law there aren't any restrictions on the prices that you are charged.  If I could talk you into buying an empty soda can for a thousand dollars, then its a legal sale.  It might be ethically wrong, but it's legal.

2)  They get by claiming that they only hire handicapped workers, and that the products are all packaged, processed, and shipped by handicapped workers (As well as the telemarketers all being handicapped).  They operate under the disguise that they're selling the products at vastly inflated rates in order to provide handicapped workers a job.  But,

1b)  Many of the employees they employ are in fact, NOT handicapped.  I was not handicapped when they hired me.  All they asked me when I called to inquire about the job was "Do you have telemarketing experience?"  During my interview they informed me that they only hire handicapped personell, but depression, anxiety, or any other diagnosis will qualify.  They do NOT verify that you have the disability that you claim to have.

2b)  Their "telemarketers" blatantly lie.  They routinely tell people it is a donation or a contribution, when in fact it is not.  They will say things like "And for your donation of $50 I'm gonna send you a gift of lightbulbs!"  This is not true.  It is a purchase, at a vastly inflated rate, that is suppose to help keep the handicapped individual employed.

2c)  I saw people NOT in wheelchairs tell customers they were in a wheelchair, and I saw guys in their 20's/30's telling people they just got out of the hospital from a Stroke.  One guy I worked with would talk like a "retard" when he was on the phone, but he had no actual disability.  Another guy claimed he was a crippled veteran from the Iraq war, when in fact he wasn't a Veteran let alone crippled.

-----

Their motto is "It's not the price or the Product, it's your Story!!"  They sell household items so they have something that everyone uses, but the prices are around 10X retail value (And if they can get more out of you, they will).

Most of their customers are misled into thinking it is a charity, or that they are specifically helping a handicapped person out.  Many of their customers are the elderly, or people who can't really tell what they're doing over the phone.

As far as them overcharging, I didn't personally see that happening.  I also am not aware of any orders being sent out without authorization (They have a second person validate that the order is legitamate, but I guess they didn't always do that so it is likely people use to ship out products with bills, or overcharged people's credit cards.)

Those of you getting called multiple times a day, they work on an Auto-Dialer system.  So if you don't answer they just press a button and call the next number.  But it recylces you in the queue and will often call you back many times in the same day.

My direct Opion:  Their telemarketers are dishonest (But very good at it), and the company is exploiting what HAS to be a loophole somewhere to sell cheap crap at expensive prices.  When you purchase from them you ARE helping someone out -- The company profits, and the telemarketer makes a commission off of each and every sale.  If they do not maintain a quota of sales they will get fired, so even the actual Handicapped people that work for the company have no job security -- And since most of the "Good" telemarketers are NOT handicapped, those are the people who work with the company long term.

You are EXACTLY right.  My ex worked there and he is a drug addict and a felon.  And did great at talking people in to buying the items.  I couldn't believe some of the stories I heard him spew thru the phone while I was on hold on his cell. Very few if any of the employees are actually physically disabled.  It's drug addicts and felons that call you... Oh.. and he's and ex for a reason.

This phone number has been calling my cell phone 2-3 times daily for the past 3 days and never leaves a message.

(looking at the caller ID that showed up for the other person who was called, this may be the "American Handicapped/Disabled something" that called me for a donation 4 years ago and I foolishly agreed and they have not left me alone since even though I repeatedly tell them to get me off their call list. ahdw rep gives a string of statements that they help disabled veterans asking for $ to help these veterans as a donation. then they insisted on give merchandise when refused simply only to give a donation. the gift is not a donation gift but misleading to put u in a position of a purchase. these people should be recorded for their misleading and often direct lies. oh, they said they would take us off the list when we paid. when told, they were adamant in saying that we made a purchase! (item was refused time and time with only an intention to donate some undisclosed amount - though they kept placing an amount and them sticking an item with that later in the conservation). they should be ashamed! but, unsociables and predators are rarely remorseful!
