A person named Frederick Chambers responded to an e-mail I had in the paper regarding an apartment for rent. Phone # appears to be out of Canada. Seems pretty wierd.

this person responded to a house for rent ad in the Washington Post.  He says he will be moving to the US from overseas and asks if we can negotiate a short term lease.  I am not going to respond as this appears to be the beginning of a typical spam trolling. So far, this is the second and so fra only type of response I'm getting from washingtonpost.com  It will be the last time I use the service.

I just received an email from a Frederick Chambers. Claims to be arriving in the states in a few weeks. He needs housing as of June 8th. When I told him the apt. wasn't available until 7/1, he still wanted it. Sight unseen.
I reported him to apartments.com and they quickly replied and apologized.
Damn scams.

Same name, Kamron Williams, 72, civil engineer living in the Philippines with his wife, 58. He saw my ad on craigslist and wanted to secure my rental property stating his own terms with a non-refundable deposit and upfront payment of his entire lease term.  I responded politely as I was not sure if this was legit. It sounded too good to be true and I felt very uncomfortable about the whole thing.

It seems he's now tried this scam on me too saying he's 72 and that he and his wife want to come from the Phillipines, rent my house mid-month and pay the full amount for a year.  What can we do to protect others from falling for this? To whom can it be reported? Are all these responses to ads on Craig's list?

The same scammer is now using the same letter and phone using the identity of Donald Reed Jr. from Dublin.

FYI, these emails originate from Nigeria. Look at the full address header of the email you receive or 'View Source". If the "Received from" field has a number that starts with 41.219.xxx.xxx, that is from Nigeria, no matter what server the header says it's coming from.

I luckily was alert enough to check this out before I send him any info. Hopefully, all you renters will too.

July 7. He also responded to my ad for an apartment rental in Las Vegas. Same exact text as a prior poster. I decided to google him, and I am glad I did. thanks to every one, we can all avoid getting scammed now. His email is engrfchambers01@rocketmail.com, and here is his last reply when I told him more about the apartment for rent:
Hello ,

Great to hear from you. I appreciate your response and will like to confirm my interest in July 15 as the rental start date.  As I am working with a client at the moment here in Laguna, I will be unable to inspect the place and I have decided to rely on my instincts as I need to ensure I have a place secured for me prior to my arrival. I am hoping this is comfortable for you as well.

Are there further details I need to know about your place? Do you have basic furniture in place? Otherwise, I am sure you can advise on a couple of furniture rental companies in the neighbourhood. How much will be the total monthly rent with utilities included?

My Full name is Fred Chambers and I am a trained civil engineer with a wealth of experience in the construction industry. I also double as a consultant to clients with professional needs. My wife's name is Roxanne Marie Chambers and she is a librarian and social welfare worker. I am 72 years old and my wife is 58. Our current home address is No. 22 Ayala Ave, P.O. Box 731-D-3144, Makati City, Manila, Philippines. I work as a freelance consultant to clients handling building construction projects. I have to
travel every now and then for work related activities. I ought to be retired at my age but I find that I can still make a living working independently and also at my pace a consultant. I am comfortable and happy with a loving wife and two adult sons from my previous marriage. I actually got re-married to Roxanne last year though. I do not smoke nor keep pets as I don't have the time to watch over them. I am quite social but only when time and chance permits me which happens to be hard these days.

Kindly note that upon my arrival and prior to receiving the keys to your place, I shall provide you with necessary proof of financial resources for my rent and also identity documents for your retention as I am to become your tenant. I also plan to make an upfront payment of my rent for the signed rental period at that point as one year is perfect for me.

In regards securing your place prior to my arrival, I will be happy to have a deposit sent to you so I am certain I have your place on hold for me. I will gladly ask one of my clients in the states to send a non-refundable deposit of $750 to confirm my commitment.

In order for you to receive this deposit, I will need your full name and address so that I can forward it to my client as soon as possible.

I appreciate your understanding and hope to hear from you soon.
Kind Regards,
Fred Chambers.

Fell for it also.  Received the deposit from him today - but, of course, it was $3360 instead of the $750.  These are counterfeit money grams and he wants you to cash them and then send money to his "travel agent" in Savannah.  Later, your bank will make you pay for these counterfeit money orders and "Frederick Chambers" will get $1900 cash just like that.  Needless, to say you won't hear from him again or his interest in your apartment for rent.  Found this at moneygram.com:

Fraud Schemes: Checks/Money Orders in the Mail

Have you received a check or money order in the mail with instructions to first cash it at your bank and then send some of the funds to someone else through a MoneyGram money transfer? If so, the check/ money order is counterfeit and your bank will make you cover the loss.

Be aware that counterfeit checks are very hard to identify. You may have been promised a percentage of the check for employment or because of an over payment. This is a SCAM. Do not send the money and do not cash the check.

Got the same message for Fred Chambers and instead of catching on I thought it was pretty real.  I have since received his money gram cashiers checks totaling $3360.00  they arrived via UPS today and seem very real.  Have not cashed them yet.  He wrote right away asking that since he submitted too much money to me accidentally, that I please Western Union some travel agent named Karen $1900 today.  that arose suspicion.  I provided a lease signed by me and also my home address and nothing else.  Not sure how far he can go from here with this info but will place a fraud alert on my bank accounts ASAP.

I also received the same email as Pamle from Fred Chambers claims he's in the Phillipines and on his way to Miami.  Same scam, 750 up front, 1 year lease paid in advance.  Fortunately I kept looking for other tenants.  Answered my ad on Craig's list as well.

Everybody here received the same email and everybody knows for a fact that it is a scam. Proofs? "It's too good to be true!" If our society would trust these type of proofs we would be also a country like the Philipines, of the 3d world. And would have a majority of people that think like all of you. DeMattei forup had a good experience, right? So dont be such Smartasses all of you!
