If you hang up the computer is programmed to try again.  The software gives them a couple of hundred lines.   The best way is to pick up, put call on mute and leave the receiver off until THEY hang up.  It will tell their computer program that the hang up came from their end not yours.  Ties up their lines.  They don't know whether or not they reached a live line.  And most importantly they don't get to talk to a person.  It's a pain but eventually they get the message.  My suggestion if they are persistent.  Good luck.

It is my understanding that, even though the phone companies have the ability to detect spoofed numbers, they currently do not pass any information along to the called party that could be used to identify any given number as one that has been spoofed.

There are certain software solutions that might help you reduce the number of calls you receive.  For example, there is a free service called nomorobo that blocks numbers identified by people who are using this service, but it is not available for all carriers.

60 Questions:  Thanks.  My problem is that I run a business out of my home so I cannot 'white list'.  Are there no devices that can detect computer software generated calls? That does not sound like rocket science.  So appreciated your advice.

I am with AT&T, but I have never tried using *60 to block calls.  I just had *way* too many spammer/scammer calls to use the "feature" that is available through my phone service (of course, a limited number of "blocks" for an additional monthly fee, as well).  Instead, I bought a call-blocking device that blocks spoofed numbers.  In my case (I know this "solution" will not work for others.), I found that the call-blocking device works best by just "white-listing" the numbers of people I want to call me and then I let the device black-list (i.e., block) all other calls.

What kind of blocking are you talking about?  I have a call-blocking device for my landline and it definitely blocks spoofed numbers.

Blocking doesn't work on spoof numbers.  Blocking only works on legal numbers.  The Telemarketing software works kind of like a calling card except unlike a calling card you get to choose what number you want to show on the screen.  The software dials the number for the TM showing the incorrect ID.  Blocking does not pick that up.

I agree.  They usually call me during the day which targets seniors, people who are not working during the day, or unemployed.  Caller ID's do not work because the Telemarketing software can place any phone number on the screen....called spoofing or masking.  6044301091 is owned by Telus and is not in service even though it is listed in the directory under a person who probably had it last....gotta feel sorry for them.

My son answered the phone and recognized it was a scam right away (They wanted to get our credit card number, the expiry date and the CVC) . He spoke to the caller for more than 10 minutes giving him false information and making some nasty joke the caller was unable to understand because of his poor knowledge of the English language. When my son had enough because the caller was quite stupid ? repeating everything - he told the caller to get lost and hanged up! They don?t like it when you waste their time? They won?t call back!

These people spoof numbers. It isn't real and it isn't Canadian. Likely they are illegal. Obviously, illegal, people in other countries, don't care about you registering for the DNC list.

yes we can stop the calls, complain to your governments to legislate that people cannot use the phone system  for robo calls or fishing calls or random advertising schemes and the like. Empower your phone company to refuse calls from offending tellephone companies that wont prohibit its users to do this. The phone companies say "there is nothing we can do" yet they sell service for these people to make long distance calls. So make it clear to your telephone company to stop these calls and if they say they cannot, start removing extra billed se5rvices from your phone account. perhaps give up the spare home phone. hurt them where it counts untill the phone companies play ball.

I received a few calls from this number, with no one present when I answered.  I answered to most recent call after the first ring as I was holding the phone, and there was a high frequency tone on the line that was not a fax tone; it lasted for about 3 or 4 seconds then the call terminated with a few 'click' sounds.  I have set this number up to be blocked by my phone going forward.

I just came back from the hospital because  I had an operation Today.
When I got home I emailed my son who lives in Whistler and the area code is (604).
Few minutes later I got a call from the same area code but with a different number.
I thought my son was using his boss telephone.
Conclusion: I answered it but no one spoke.
Then they called again and there was no answer.
The other day I got a call about the credit cards too and I pressed '1".
The guy was very happy that  chose to talk to him.
I said;"Do you know why I chose to speak to you/"
He replied:because you want to lower down your credit card interest.
I replied: I chose to talk to you because I am a Christian and in the name of Jesus Christ I rebuke that spirit of deception , scam and exploitation from you".
He hang up!

We just got called by this number.  I told the guy to take the number off their list.  I told him I was my mothers power of attorney.  He said I didn't sound educated for a power of attorney.  I then told him "you sound like a goddamn f****ng idiot." He hung up on me.
