In the past couple weeks I've had on and off connections with a Cynthia "Cindi" Morgan about a job to help her family with moving. She had been replying to me back and forth. I recently received a text message from her and as I kept talking to her she kept replying specifically to my questions, so I thought it was legitimate. She sent me a check in the mail as a signing bonus to keep me committed to the job. I went to deposit the check and it turned out fraudulent. I almost got the cops called on me because of it. Once I told her what happened and she never texted back. Even after I sent her about 4 -5messages. The check is for $4000 so it's hard to turn down. But it's definitely a scam.

(continued from my previous comment)

I posted that comment somehow thinking this page was RE 605-923-8127 which "Alabama & Ohio" wrote it had changed to from another number (not sure what that meant). I didn't look at the top of the page to see the 605-610-8267 reference.

Anyhow, I called  605-923-8127 anonymously and it was a Google Voice # for what sounded like "Cynthia Morgan" (didn't get a live person). There's something odd going on either way.

I received the same thing. We posted an add on Craigslist looking for a house. I received this email from Amber String:

Hi, How are you? I hope you are still looking for a place. My aunt has some offers you may be interested in.. You can text her back with your interest.

I asked what the address was and she gave me an address in the town we are currently in not the one we are moving to. So then she gave me one from the place we are moving to. Very nice houses. We worked out the details of how much and when. She emailed me the application(general). I messaged her and said that it only has room for 1 person on the application and if I needed to print out a second application for my husband. She stated that 1 was fine. I asked her once she receives the application back how long until we know if we got it. She stated as soon as she gets the application, 1st months rent and $300 deposit it would be ours. My husband thought it was too good to be true, that he didn't want to be out the money if it was a scam. So I tried to Google the nieces name and found nothing, then I tried to Google her name and found nothing. So I took the phone number that I have been texting to and put it in reverse phone number look up and it says VoIP phone from Sioux Falls, SD, when she told me that she moved to KY. hmmm so then I decided to stop filling out the application so I never sent it back......thank goodness or that could have been bad. So I decided to call the real estate agent that had it on the market to double check...the house sold yesterday.....hmmmmmm. I then put the number in Google and found this site.Yeah your not getting my money or information and from now on I will be checking into every little thing to make sure its not a scam. I also took my post off of Craigslist stating that I need a house. Even though we still do. I just hope that people have not fully fallen for this and now out the money and there is nothing they can do.

Why do people have to do this to innocent people that are honest and needing a place. ugh what is this world coming to.

Got the same reply while looking for housing in northern California. Except this time the name was Amber Rambo. This was the exact message:

"Hi,  How are you? I hope you are still looking for a place. My aunt has some offers you may be interested in.. You can text her back with your interest.

2 bedroom and 2 bath house up for grap
3 bedrooms with house,

Things that gave this away as a scam:
-No specific information (address, price, anything)
-Misspelled words
-Deaf aunt...don't call...b***s***

So I googled it and ta-da it's a scam!

I got an email in reply to my Craigslist post in Boston, MA looking for an apartment.  The email said it was from a Darole Smith looking to find someone to rent from deaf Aunt Barbara, who would prefer to communicate by text message.  I texted about it, and got a sort of choppy/possibly translated reply.  In this area, a $300 deposit is really quite cheap, so I asked what part of the city it was in.  I haven't gotten a response yet, and I don't expect to.

To be fair, I do prefer to text message (being relatively young), I do know hard-of-hearing people who can text but not take phonecalls, and I do give out my Google Voice number more readily than my personal number, because Google Voice can auto-filter and auto-block telemarketers.

Same thing happened to me just now. I wish I would have looked up the number first! I posted an ad on Craigslist and Mendy emailed me back about her deaf aunt Barbara. I was also told to text and not call and that she had 3 properties for rent. Barbara asked where I was looking and told her. She then told me she was asking $1280 per month with a $300 deposit. I said thanks for the info but I couldn't afford that rent and I was then asked what my budget could afford and she said she would work with me. I said I wasn't looking to move until May 1st and she replied she couldn't wait that long and hoped I understood. I asked if I could see the property and then possibly send a deposit. She gave me the address of a home that is for sale. Barbara texted that she relocated to KY and changed her mind about selling it. I asked if I wanted to see inside if I could call the realtor and she said the realtor already mailed her back her keys. She used the pronoun "he" for the realtor and the listing agent is female. I drove to the property and there is a lockbox on the door from the realtor with flyers. I voiced concern over the house being for sale since I'm looking for a long term rental and I was told that since she changed her mind about selling that I could live there as long as I wanted. She added that she was really looking for someone who would take good care of the place. Barbara said that I could live there as long as I wanted and she would mail me the keys as soon as she received payment. I asked about a lease and an application and then she asked for my email address and said she would send it in the morning & said good night. That's when I started investigating. I wish I would have sooner. Would have saved myself a lot of trouble and disappointment. I left a message for the realtor letting them know. DON'T GIVE ANY INFORMATION!

I am still conversing with this Barbara woman as I read all the messages. Thanks to google you can find everything. I have a sad case put all my sincerity on craigslist and got this mess still trying to hook me in. I asked if this is a situation where u send your money to w. Africa only to be mailed a key after money was sent. She of course assured me no but is running out of fumes to keep this up. I was desperate and in need and if I weren't hip to scams I would have submitted info I would have regretted sending. At some point I tried to call too and it was a voicemail. Pretty sad how desperate these people are and how hateful they are of Americans!

If you get a response to a Craigslist ad from a Teri Lambo saying their Aunt Barbera who is deaf has property, and to TEXT and "Do not call as she is deaf" DO NOT TEXT THEM! It is a scam! I did and found out the hard way! In my experience, 605 is a sure scam area code! I remembered after texting this "woman" that I had gotten spam calls from this area code in the past so I googled it. This should be illegal. There's so much spm out there, the goverment should be doing something about this! Track these a holes down and fine them or throw them in jail! Something! So these jerks can't scam innocent people anymore!

Wow! I live in Waterford, Mi and am just experiencing the same thing! The deal was too good to be true. That's why I started to get suspicious & started doing research! Teri Lambo emailed me responding to an ad I posted on craigslist and told me her aunt was deaf & to text, not call and her name is Barbera & had 3 properties to choose from. But we only discussed one.

This number is a Google voice number from an app. I also received an email to text the number regarding rental property. So I researched and I called. My belief is that it is being used in attempt to get information to aid in identity theft. I reported thus to several agencies . Bad thing is I really am in urgent need of finding a rental.

I'm in Painesville, Ohio and got an email saying I should text back this number. I posted a Craigslist ad that I was looking for 2bedroom housing for rent.

message to me stated that someone's deaf aunt had housing, do not reply to the email, because not the aunt... and don't bother calling, because the Aunt Barbara is deaf...

So don't reply, don't call, but text who I am, what I am looking for, and what I am willing to pay...

Seems like spam to me.
