DANGER! DO NOT GET SCAMMED!

Bogus call from "Microsoft Windows" or "Windows Tech Support" by an east indian male who sounds like he's calling from a busy Laundromat. Wasn't listening much after that. The scam is they claim your computer has errors or viruses and is sending messages to them at Microsoft about it. They will try to get you to cooperate to allow them remote access to your computer. What they will do is some hogwash to make it look like they are fixing stuff - but they do not - and what's worse they can either leave a backdoor on your machine (for future, secret access) or possibly encrypt your hard drive and hold your data for ransom.

I'm not sure what sort of trickery this specific team has in mind, but be sure they ARE NOT HONEST. They are out to TRICK YOU AND CHEAT YOU. Computers do not "call for help" when they have issues, and if they did, these people would not be the ones they would try to contact.

If your computer happens to have issues (most do to some extent) and you feel the need to have it looked at, let an experienced family member or friend tend to it, or take it to a local computer shop in person.

Just received a call from a heavily accented male saying my Windows program had been compromised by a virus.  I do not have windows as an operating system.  He insisted that I did and called me a liar...  Seriously...  A liar...  The phone number appears to have been run through New York but I'm guessing it's somewhere much further afield.  A liar.  Nice work buddy.

Yup just received 2 calls from these idiots (east indian decent) claiming they were from Microsoft Windows and that my computer has a virus and they could help me fix it. Wanted me to go on my computer but skeptical as i am i screamed at them, 'where are you from?' 'how did you get my phone number?' and yelled not to call back (which they haven't). The first number was Unknown and the second was 607-527-8802. i also reported them to our Canadian Fraud Org.

Got a call saying that they were technical support for my Windows PC. I said I had no Windows computer, which cause them to hang up promptly. When you call back the number it says it is disconnected. Shady!

These people have changed their M.O. slightly.  They called me recently and said they were working to refund money to customers of a computer company that I'd actually done good business with.  The company supposedly owed taxes and was being forced, as a part of a Court Order in India to pay $ to customers of this company, but could only send $ in increments of $700, and I could use PayPal if I wanted  -- this was Friday (February 21, 2014) so, the caller said, that since they only owed me $300 (the actual charge for my year's contract), I would have to send them $400 by wire or Western Union immediately to make up the difference.  (He claimed the transfer had already been made to my PayPal account, but the $ would not hit till Monday. The caller stated that his company was working with my company to see that these refunds were made. He told me to wire the $ to someone allegedly named Animesh Mukherjee, his "supervisor," at +011 918981674477.  (When I typed the name into the computer, I learned that there is a renowned and respectable computer professor in India with the same name, but it may just be a very common name or simply made up. I also typed the wire number into Google with no hits. The store clerk would then give me a number that confirmed the wire.  If I did NOT immediately send the $400, he would lock and "destroy" the computer so I could not get on it at all.  As soon as I typed the store's confirmation # into the computer, he would unlock it. We had "words," and he froze my computer totally.  I could not even boot up to Windows without the password I would have allegedly gotten after I supplied proof of payment.  Oddly, according to report, in a fair number of these cases, they actually do unlock the computer.  However that was then, and this is now.  Moreover,  you have no idea who you're communicating with.  Also, paying the caller "ransom" is cooperation with extortion.  Thank heavens I had an external hard drive, as well as total back-up at a remote location!  I had  my private computer tech. come over and bring my computer back to life.  It was a long and expensive process, since -- after he overcame the padlock -- all my (backed-up) data had to be re-formatted.  (I can't recall if he told me that the data had been encrypted or not, though they can do that too.) What a nightmare. Moral of the story: get your computer backed up completely.  Also, do NOT give remote access to anyone, except friends or  privately retained, local technicians whom you know and trust.  Believe it or not,  someone called me today starting the same story over again (need to refund $, etc.) from a Boston # which came up as a pay phone - (607) 527-8802 - the subject number of this site. Good luck!

My experience was very much like this.  The caller also said that the problems were traced to my computer by its CLSID number.  I asked her exactly which of my computers since I have 3 of them. She had no answer, but insisted that if they were all using the same wifi connection, then they would all 3 be affected. So then I wanted to know how that could be since they aren't networked.  And, if this is true, wouldn't it follow that every smart phone that used my wifi might also be compromised?  Maybe it wasn't very nice of me, but I had so much fun playing with the caller before telling her that I would research her company and call her back if I was interested in her services. She gave me a company name along with a Colorado phone number.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

Same as Andrew reported... caller claimed my IP was 192.168.0.100 ... which is a non-existent IP within my own network (I have no device with that IP and all my devices are statically assigned).  He made it clear that didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I told him that, so I told him he was a very incompetent criminal and hung up.

I've gotten 2 calls from them in the past week. The first time the guy said his name was "Shaun Blaine" and that my computer was being hacked or something. It was pretty hilarious because he had a strong East Indian accent, and it was pretty hard to believe that his name was Shaun Blaine. I told him I was busy and he said he'd call back later.

He called back today saying his name was "Kevin Jones" and that he remembered talking to me.  I said I couldn't talk to him and he said he's going to call back again on Monday. How do I make sure he doesn't hack into my computer?
