Actually, they will need a payment to clean up the account and take it off the credit report. My daughter talked to them and they were quite adament abouting getting a payment, my daughter told them that she only worked 30 hours a week and didn't make a lot of money. They wanted $193 a month, I told my daughter to tell them she can only afford 50 a month and she can not pay another penny. She said they won't go for that, I reminded her that as long as you are paying something, they will take it. Something is better than nothing. She was too scared of them, not sure what they said to her, but she agreed to make $100 a month payments. Which means I am probably going to have to help here, which will probably put me in a bind.

This is from Great Lakes for student loans. Even after I set up a forbearance on my loans I STILL get called everyday, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.  Now I just answer it and hang up just like they do when you don't answer.  They don't leave messages. It is only a matter of time before they are sued for harrassment.

If you are late on your student loans, the servicer has to call you due to federal regulations until you make payment arrangements.  If you are not the person who Great Lakes is calling for, just call back and say you do not know this person and we will remove your number from our calling list.  We are trying to help you not default on your student loan.  Try doing a google search from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and also see my note below.  Thanks!

Calling for my loan that I'd already sent paper work for. The guy was very rude and I requested to talk to Supervisor, he came back after 2mins that the supervisor would not be able to talk to me but wants me to send my wife recent paystub to finalize the processing of my doc. But I asked; I did not not include anything about my spouse in the form I sent to your office , How I come  you're requesting for my wife's  Paystub? and the line went off.

I just received a call from this number and immediately "Googled" it bc I didn't recognize it.  I knew 608 was a Madison prefix because I lived there for a long time, but I'm not in contact with anyone who lives there anymore, and I didn't want to waste precious free minutes, so I didn't answer.

It is Great Lakes Higher Education--a legitimate company that deals with student loans--typically for students in Wisconsin or even the mid-west. I know it's legit bc I used them when I went to school at the UW-Madison.

I had given my niece permission to use me as a reference on her application for a student loan from them. If they keep calling, it is probably because someone put your name down as a reference and they are trying to contact them.
The rep asked me for my niece's address. I will contact my niece, like I did when GLHE called a year ago to update their records, and tell her to get her sh*t together and stay in contact with them.

If Great Lakes is calling, you better answer.  They service student loans for the government.  Go bad on a dept of education loan, no tax refunds, no money for school and your credit is messed up.  Personal exp here

So what happens if your info at school is updated and they still keep calling my parent's house in a different state? Does anyone not pick up when you try calling the number back?

Thanks

They have called me a couple of times now looking for the person who used to have my phone number. I called them back after the first one and, supposedly, had my name removed from their call list. That's not enough for these people. I get calls for this guy all the time, even from his friends and family.

I work for Great Lakes and we are calling you because either you were listed as a reference on someone's student loan application, or we service a student loan that you have not been paying on.  We have also begun servicing loans for the Dept. of Education so you may not have heard of Great Lakes, be we have become your servicer.  Great Lakes is indeed a legitimate company and has been in the student loan business for over forty years.  Do a google searce about Dept. of Education loans and you will see for yourself that this is true.  Great Lakes, Nelnet, AES and Sallie Mae are receiving your loans from the Dept. of Education.  We are calling in an effort to help!  There are many assistance options available for student loans.  If you are past due and can't make your payments just call us and we will be happy to help you!!  If we are calling you as a reference it is because we have been trying to reach the borrower and no longer have a mailing address or phone number for them.  Great Lakes is not a scam and we are in the service business.  We are reaching out to the borrowers to help them not default on their student loans.  Unfortunately, when you call us back at the above numbers as a reference, we are not able to release a great deal of information about our company and the person that we are calling about due to federal privacy laws.  Hope this helps clear up the confusion, and please pick up the phone.  It will make both of our lives easier!

Suspect this is a collections agency, but could be wrong. Woman called my cell knowing my full name and left a message asking me to update my ex-boyfriend's mailing information because I was listed as a "personal reference." Caller identified self as being from the Address Department of Great Lakes, a company I suspect doesn't exist as numerous attempts to find contact information were fruitless.

I received a call from this number.  The caller gave me his name and said he was calling for a refercence for a Josh D. Diess who had given my name as a reference and asked if I knew him.

I said I never heard of that name.  He pressed me three times.  I finally said, "You must be a credit and collections company, are you?"  He said "No we are Great Lakes."

With that I told him I never heard of anyone by that name which I haven't.

He hung up.

Being suspicious, I checked this site.

I have received multiple calls from phone number 608 240 1310. The call was received on my cell phone and gives the city and state where it originated from. When I redialed, it was busy. I used this site to find that it was a collection agency which tries to collect on unpaid student loans. I called Great Lakes at 608 240 1700 main office number. A kind gentleman answered the phone who didn't give out much information obviously because of privacy laws. I had him cross reference my phone number to an ex-employee who used me as a personal reference for a student loan. I am not saying that all students who don't pay back their loans are jerk-offs, but this one was. I was happy to supply a active phone number so that they can contact this person and deal with them directly rather than me. I have not heard from them since and hope that they get their money back from the person that owes it. After all... it was a loan, meaning pay them back, even if it is a payment of 25 dollars a month. Have some decency!

Hope this helped!

The Main office number listed in FatMikie's post now results in "that number has been disconnected and is no longer in service." If you go to Great Lakes web site, and call the main number listed under "contact us" you get a completely different company that says they don't know anything about Great Lakes.

I just got two calls from this number and I didn't answer, but they never left a message. So I googled it and I found this page. The thing is that I don't owe anyone any loans! I've never even taken out a loan! And I live nowhere near Wisconsin and don't know anyone who does. So why are these people calling me??

Received a call but didn't recognize the number so I didn't answer. Googled it and found this page. Called the number someone previously posted and spoke to a very nice lady. She explained that the loan is a FEDERAL loan and that I have options to help if I cannot pay it right now. I told her i'm still in school and she suspended the account so i'm not getting charged while in school. She was very nice and helpful.

It's a legit service so quit all your damn whining, and either help these ppl out or contact whoever it is they are looking for and tell them to get their sh*t together and start paying their bill. It's not these rep's fault that YOU are listed as a reference for someone not paying their bill.

You claim the person they are calling about never took a loan out from them? Ok, then call them and get it settled!

If you can't release enough information to verify you are legitimate - I mean, your reps won't even give me their name and employee number - then I will not provide any information to you.  Seriously - do not even think of calling people and not providing enough information to prove your veracity and then demand I do your skip trace job for you.

Further, I've assisted in providing information; two months later, your organization is calling yet again because of some failure to update the records.  I am not your information service nor your skip trace service.

That's cool you wish to defend your system, but your system needs work, like most things involving government programs.  I will not violate anyone's right to privacy just because someone claims to be from Great Lakes yet provides no other useful identifying information.

We received a call from this number regarding our DiL, at our business number (my husband is self-employed).  Caller asked for my husband by name, I said he was here and asked who was calling.  The caller seemed irritated that she had to answer my question, and then asked if he was here (again).  She said he had been given his name as a reference for our DiL and wanted to 'update' her information, and that it was 'about her education'.  I realize they get ppl dodging debt all the time, but 1-you're calling me at my business, and 2-I didn't sign up for the loan - I was given as a reference.  So don't get pissy with me.  Being nice to me will get you what you want:

We have a policy where any collections calls for any of our children, or my husband's ex-wife :\ results in us giving them the most recent phone number we have for them.  I'm not fielding any creditors for anyone, so if they want information they're going to get it.  Dealing with your creditors is the best policy anyway.
