Unless you have a severe medical condition or die getting out of a Student Loan is next to impossible!  Great Lakes will hound you almost every day.  Getting medical deferremt does help for a few months, but this hangs around your neck like an anchor for the rest of your life.

Got a call from this number at 9:08 this morning. - Did NOT leave a message.

Caller ID says: GREAT LAKES EDU - 608-246-1550

Someone said earlier that this is the Great Lakes College collections Department trying to collect on past due student loans. I have NEVER attended that school and I have NEVER had a student loan. Back when I attended a Big Ten University 40 years ago, I paid for my school as I went along without needing any student loans. College was affordable back then.

I received 2 calls today from numbers with no name ID - (800) 236-4300 and (312) 348-6024. I looked up the 800 number and callers on this site said it belonged to Great Lakes Education (for student loans). One person said to call them because they are very nice and will work with you, and before they send your account to DCS for collections (because they are a living hell to deal with). I don't know what DCS stands for so I can't look it up online. However, I looked up the other number (the 312 number - which made it's calls almost immediately following the 800 number call), and a poster on this site said it belonged to RFGI - Roslin Finincial Group, Inc. (www.rgfionline.com) - which is a collections agency of some sort.

I do have student loans (and plan to call Great Lakes), and I have just very recently (within the last month, I estimate) begun receiving snail mail from them (after several months of e-mails, which I didn't respond to - at first they were showing up in my spam box and I deleted them right a way without bothering to actually look at them, then, for some odd reason, they stopped going to my spam box and started showing up in my inbox - again, I didn't look at them at all, I marked them as spam and they were moved - because I always see those "your school loan" or "education assistance" emails, which ARE spam, so that's what I just assumed they were - so I guess they started sending the snail mail in case my email address was no longer valid, due to my lack of response to them). However, I have never received any mail (neither snail mail nor emails) from the company called RFGI, so I have no idea what they are calling about ..

I am wondering - is it possible that RFGI is the one Great Lakes uses for collections, and not DCS? (I've never received any mail from a DCS company, either). I do intend to call both of these places back ... It's never my intent to just not pay my bills ever ...so I want to deal with whatever these are regarding. I just like to be armed with as much info as possible, before responding - I don't like to be blind-sided, or be told all kinds of lies ... I like to be ready and know my rights, and also know what kind of people I'm dealing with (like, are they polite, understanding people who are willing to work with you, or are they rude, obnoxious ones - the kind that are more like the thugs that organized crime uses to "rough you up" and don't care if they leave you half-dead or dead-broke, just as long as they get their money - like the so-called "law firm" I'm dealing with now, who are lawyers alright, but they chose to be an organization who practices a "different" kind of law - ONLY the kind that deals with buying old debts for pennies on the dollar, and suing the person who owes the debt, and doing everything legal that they can to collect (garnish everything - autos, assets, material things, property/houses, etc.). They are completely heartless - what a shame to waste your law degree on that - really, all they are are the "thugs" I mentioned above, with the only difference being they have an education and a degree in law.

Making money off of other peoples' debts and misfortunes is SO morally wrong ... God has a special place reserved in hell for people like that (in the Bible, "Usury" is forbidden by God, and it was against the law - regular law - the kind that was completely unrelated to religion).

Prohibited Harassment

Debt collectors can call you and request that you pay the debt. However, they cannot harass you or abuse you. These are the types of things that they should not do:

Use obscene or profane language.
Make repeated frequent calls to annoy you.
Telephone you without identifying themselves.
Use threats of violence or harm against you.
Threaten to arrest you if you do not pay the debt.
Threaten to take action such as lawsuits, garnishments, or taking your property unless the collector intends to do so and it is legal. (Creditors must usually take you to court and get a court "judgment" against you before they are able to garnish your wages in Missouri.)
Debt collectors cannot make false statements about themselves or the debts. They cannot misrepresent:

they are government officials;
that you have committed a crime;
that they work for the "credit bureau";
that the papers you received are legal summonses
or legal papers, if they are not;
the amount of your debt; or
that there is an attorney involved, if there is not.
Debt collectors are also prohibited from:

depositing a post-dated check before it is due;
threatening to take your property unless it is legal to do so;
contacting you by postcard.
Payments on multiple debts

If you owe more than one debt to the same collector, you can specify the debt you are paying. If you clearly indicate that you are paying one account, the debt collector should apply the payment to the account you request. You should always keep records of your payments and correspondence with any debt collector.

What if the debt collector has violated the law?

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives you a right to sue in state or federal court within one year from the violation. If you win, you can recover damages for your loss, court costs, and attorney's fees. Remember that the one-year period runs from the date the debt collector violated the law. You should act promptly to contact an attorney if you believe a debt collector has violated the law. If you fail to file your suit within one year of the violation, you lose your right to do so.

You can also notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of violations. They cannot file lawsuits on your behalf, but they can investigate your complaints. Their address is: Consumer Response Center, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, D.C. 20580. You can also file a complaint through the Internet.

What you can do is apply for it economic hardship deferment the scanner for payments for up to 18 months this is a lot different from a forbearance forbearance will only take care of your past due this will take care of past due and continue want so no payments and no calls will have to be made for the next 18 months

I did this and requested one from them and then receive a letter stating that they are denying the request for forberance unless I make one full monthly payment which is around $250. I simply dont have the money and if I did my electric bill wouldnt be two months behind either. Food on the table or not. I asked for help and they wouldn't now what???? Trust me if I had the money they would be the FIRST people I paid off. I HATE having these outstanding school loans and would love to get them off my credit.

I got a call from them today and they didnt leave a message but after I looked up who it was I called them back. They were super helpful and asked me a few questions and were able to lower my monthly payment based on my income and put me into forbearance until April to bring my account current and forgive any late fees I had. I think that they are more than willing to work with you and help you so they can make sure your loans don't default. I would give them a chance to work with you and just be honest with them about your situation.

This is NOT a bead store. It is Great Lakes Education Services. Basically, a student loan provider. And they call if you aren't paying your loans.

This number continues to call me, but never leaves a message.  The nice thing about having a good cell phone, is that you are able to block calls from ringing on the phone if they are not in your contact list.
