We got a call from 608-261-0104 this evening and were very wary when the caller explained they were 911 staff checking on a call that came from our number.  Our line was very static-y.  In fact, we had received a call from a friend earlier and it, too, was extremely static-y.  So much so that we didn't stay on the line very long.  Now a twist:  since we had left my Mom home alone briefly and she has dementia, we considered the possibility that Mom had called and just didn't remember.

I phoned the non-emergency number (608-255-2345) for Dane County 911 and the dispatcher verified that they were checking in because they received a call from our number but nobody said anything.  As he was talking to me on our (static-y) phone, the Police arrived with the same story.  He went back to his patrol car and verified that the caller ID that registered with 911 was, in fact, ours.  The patrolman explained that this happens (a)occasionally and usually involves either a cell phone or a cordless land line phone; rarely, if ever, does it happen with a plugged-in land line phone that is in full service, and (b) there is usually some type of service problem.  That was consistent with our experience.

I tried to call out shortly after the patrolman left our home and our land-line was completely dead.  I phoned our carrier and they confirmed they have problems/outages in our area.

As I said, EVERYTHING about this call checks out for us!  It's unfortunate that most other writers (above) didn't take the time to track it down sufficiently.  We are VERY GLAD this system is in place.  It's one of the best uses of our tax dollars!

I just received a call from this number from a man claiming she was from 911 and she claimed I called her.  My phone was in my pocket but locked (always is) and I did not have any history of calling that number on my dialed list.  I reported it to the non-emergency police and they claimed that this number actually is 911 outgoing.  It seems to me like they have issues with their system.

This is a "dummy number" that avoids getting blocked as "anonymous" but you cannot call it back.
It is actually the Dane County 911 Center [aka Dane County Communications]

Also, the reason you wouldn't have a "911 Call" in your phone's history is because when your keys are locked (especially w/ Blackberry) there is a "safety feature" (created by the phone manufacturer) that if you press and hold the '9' button (sometimes any button) it dials 911. Since this is an automated "emrgency call" it doesn't get logged the same as if you pressed 9-1-1-SEND.

Agreeing w/ "Don't Shoot the Calltaker 10 Dec 2008" and "SadieMay 11 Dec 2009"
Their information is acurate and continues to be so.

I had this phone number show up twice on my phone - once while I was at my desk and my phone was in my car and another time while my phone was locked, in my pocket and I was at the grocery store. The second time the phone number showed up on my phone I actually heard it but rejected the call, as I mainly use my cell phone for texting and hadn't made any calls that day. Cell phone carrier is AT&T.

I just had the same phone call from 608-261-0104, asking me if I just called 911. But the officer was polite when asking me my location and name.
I kept my phone in my bag & did not see any outgoing call made to 911.
I am not sure whether my mobile dials it accidentally eventhough it's locked or if there is a problem with the provider.

I got a call from 608-261-0104 on my cell phone early this morning which woke me up.  There is no 911 call in my call log.  I could not have called 911 because I was asleep.  I called the Dane County non-emergency number to let them know that I was not having an emergency and the officer was pretty polite.  As soon as real people are available at my cell provider's customer service number, I will report the issue.

This call is one of many numbers from the Dane County 911 Center.  If you received a callback from this number, it is the 911 Center calling you back after they received a hangup call from your cell phone.  Some of you have indicated that there is absolutely no way that your phone called 911-trust me-it did!  Blackberry phones are the worst and they dial 911 very easily especially when the phone is in your pocket or purse and the 911 sequence is dialed accidentally-even when it is locked.  This is a Blackberry problem.  All 911 is doing is calling you back (per their policy) to make sure you are okay and to verify 3 things (where you are, what the phone number is you are calling from, and what your name is).  They'll then ask you if you need police, fire or EMS.  If you are hesitant in giving the information as some of you have indicated, it will only worsen your situation and make the dispatcher think you might have a problem or give the sense that you are no cooperating.  The 911 center fields hundreds of these bogus calls everyday.  Your accidental call to 911 is not only a hassle for you, but also one for the dispatcher.  Additionally, your call is taking away valuable time when someone who really needs 911 might be trying to call and the line is busy (happens all the time, especially when there is a big event happening like an accident on the beltline when 30 people with cell phones driving by call to report it).    For ICSPOTS-I doubt that the dispatcher was a complete jerk, but probably being stern with you since you were not cooperating.  Your call is public record-if you have a complaint about customer service, I suggest you make an inquiry.  The 911 system in Dane County is far superior to the systems of most other counties in Wisconsin.  It's the phone companies that allow their cell phones to make "phantom" calls that need tweaking along with irresponsible people who can't control their own cell phones.

I got the same call yesterday (9/4/09).  My phone was locked and in my purse so there was NO WAY I dialed anyone.  NO outgoing calls on the log and certainly NO 911 calls.  The "dispatcher" on the other end was a complete jerk and did not appear to be concerned for my safety.  If this is in fact a real 911 callback number, our system definitely needs some tweaking.  This is bogus.

I got the same call  from 6082610104 recently.  My phone was locked, and there was no 911 in my outgoing call log.  I called the non emergency dispatcher after getting off the phone with the emergency lady, and he insisted that I must have accidentally dialed 911.

What cell provider are you guys using?  I'm wondering if someone's system is on the fritz.  Quite scary when it might be an emergency system.

This phone number really is for the 911 center. It is an outgoing phone number only. If you try to call it back you will just get a recorded message. Once 911 receives an incoming 911 call from your phone and you disconnect, the calltaker will call you back and will ask you to verify your phone, address and name. With the new policy the calltaker will give this info to a cop for them to decide if they should go or not. So yes a cop may very well show up on your doorstep even if you were just using 911 to ask for directions. This is what the policy is now requiring calltakers to do if possible.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to give out your personal info to a perfect stranger, makes sense to most people.

So I would suggest a)not to call 911 to ask for directions b)if you have an issue with the way things are done, do not blame the calltaker. Instead contact Kathleen Falk and let her know how you feel about giving personal info to someone that you can't verify the identity on!

Strange, I got the same call.  They knew what street I was on but wanted to verify the number for the address.  I checked my outgoing call list too, no calls to 911 or this 608 number.
