Call comes from Atty,Hecker office but a sexy Maria Ortiz makes the call. Claims to be attorney but I highly doubt it. Tell them to only contact you by mail, that number is not your phone, and don't call at work because it violates your rights under the FCC.

Called asked for a different person, other than me, and then hung up without answering any of my questions. Strange.

Attorney General McGraw Recovers $7.9 Million for West Virginians from NJ Lawyer Hecker and APM Collection Agencies
CHARLESTON ? West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw today announced a settlement with Laurence A. Hecker, a New Jersey lawyer, and several out-of-state debt collection agencies that Hecker represents known as the APM Companies resulting in more than $7.9 million dollars in cancelled debts for West Virginians.
McGraw?s Consumer Protection Division entered into an agreement with Hecker and his two affiliated Pennsylvania collection agencies, APM Financial Solutions, LLC, and Account Portfolio Management, LLC. The settlement requires the cancellation of $7.9 million dollars in charged-off credit card debt that Hecker and the APM Companies attempted to collect from 1,922 West Virginia consumers. The companies also paid $45,000 toward customer refunds and consumer education and agreed to delete the debts from credit records.
McGraw?s office began investigating Hecker and the APM Companies in 2006 after receiving complaints from West Virginia consumers who reported they were threatened with lawsuits and excessively pressured to pay alleged debts. To further embellish the lawsuit threat, Hecker sent letters to consumers on his law office stationery to demand payment of the debts. The Attorney General?s investigation revealed that the majority of the collection attempts were for "time-barred" debts, i.e., debts so old that the statute of limitations to sue had expired and lawsuits were therefore barred by law.
The Attorney General?s Office also discovered that Hecker and the APM Companies ? which were attempting to collect debts in West Virginia without being licensed or bonded as required by state law ? were demanding payments without any proof that they owned the debts or of the amounts owed other than a computer spreadsheet.
"The credit card industry and predatory lenders have sometimes saddled West Virginia consumers with exorbitant debts," Attorney General McGraw stated. "This unfortunate situation has now evolved into a multibillion-dollar debt-buying industry in which unlawful tactics are used to coerce consumers to pay debts they may not owe with funds they do not have.
"I will not allow consumers facing dire financial circumstances to be crushed by abusive collection practices. My office will continue our vigorous efforts to enforce the law against unscrupulous collection agencies and debt buyers."
To file a complaint concerning debt collection, West Virginia consumers can contact the Attorney General?s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-368-8808. Complaint forms are also available at www.wvago.gov. For regular consumer news updates, follow the AGO on Facebook and Twitter.

Here is some useful advice to newcomers. First off, if an attorney calls you to collect a debt, it's usually an attorney who could not make it as a Lawyer, and resorts to Debt Collection to make ends meet. They prey on the weak, and try to scare you because they mask themselves as a Law Firm. Secondly, you can not be sued by any attorney that is not in your state. If a so called attorney calls you from another state other than yours, then disregard the call..stop answering the calls, and they move on...they are just looking for an easy fast buck. If an attorney from your state does call, chances are they will not sue you unless the debt is very large, and if they do send you a summons, file Bankruptcy. If you do talk to an attorney that has called you, tell them you are thinking of filing Bankruptcy, chances are, they will move on and stop calling. Like I said, these are bottom feeders that do not adhere to the rules, and prey on the weak with phoney scare tactics, don't be intimidated, the chances of ever being sued, is very, very slim...

HAS ANYONE 'ACTUALLY' EVER BEEN SUED BY THESE ANIMALS?
................. I hear Crickets ...................

Dr.Justice is exactly right. If something was needing to be done about these "debts", then they would have been already cleared, reported, or written off. This "agency" is just fishing for leads on worthless old debts for pure profit. Don't even think about giving them any info that they don't already have.

Just got the call... I don't personally know anyone from 609 so I didn't answer. Good thing, cause I found this site.
| Annoyed2 2008-02-29 15:07:42 Unknown |
Guessing it's a collection agency from notes above and when I called back I received the following message:
"We're sorry the Nextel number you're trying to reach is not
in service at this time. Please check the number and dial
again. PA0102."
Obviously not that interested in collecting a debt if they won't answer when you call back. Probably using some sort of automated system to find those who will take their call. Just wait out the Statute of Limitations then report them or get a lawyer and get fees for illegal actions.

I actually got a letter from the law offices of Laurence A. Hecker. Googled, and got this page. I figured it was a sham, but wanted to check online. The phone numbers on it are 800-355-0123, and 609-570-3039. The biggest clue it was a sham? They said it "may be submitted to a credit reporting agency". Uh...if I owed $15,000 and you were collecting, it would already have been reported. Jerks.
