I have been getting calls constantly for the last year - 2-4 times a week from these people.  I never answer.  Last month, three days in a row, a lady asked on the answering machine "Is Robert there?", next day asked for Jeremy, next day asked for Cheryl.  (I don't know Jeremy or Cheryl).  Did she not know who she was calling??  Here is info on last three calls in last 12 days::

BCFA          616-613-2156
Breast CancerFA     616-613-2185
BC Fin Assist      616-613-2217

Followup

Eight days later, a supervisor did call back [using phone number (855) 552-8455, look this number up on 800Notes] and asked for my wife by first initial and last name. I asked about the percentage of donations that actually go to the Breast Cancer Foundation and the supervisor repeated exactly what the original phone call interviewer said, 5% goes to the charity and 95% is retained by the professional fundraiser for administrative costs.

I also asked if my donation was tax deductible, and he replied "I don't know."

I told him that the IRS certainly wouldn't consider a donation with only 5% going to the charity as being a "charitable contribution" and therefore, not tax deductible. This "charity" has not provided the basic information requested by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) so it remains unclassified by the BBB. Very suspicious, indeed.

He asked if he could help me with anything else and I asked "can you put me on your Do Not Call list" and he replied, "Yes, we'd be glad to do that for you."

What a scam!

Live call from (609) 318-6033
Caller ID: BCFA

Also called from: (848) 248-4676 (26 November 2013 & 21 May, 2013)

To my surprise, this was a live person on the line. It was "Amanda" solicitating for donations for breast cancer. They asked for "the lady of the house" but when I said there was no lady of the house, she said she can talk to me.

Here is roughly how the call went:

caller: "...we're professional fundraisers. If we send you an envelope, can we count on you for something small?"
I was tempted to say something "smart" but I resisted, lol.
me: "What percent of my contribution actually goes to help fight breast cancer?"

caller: "When you donate, only 5% goes to fight cancer, 95% goes to the administrative costs of fundraising..."
me: "Only 5%? That's not very much, is it?"

caller: "Can we count on your support at the $15 level?"
me: "So you're saying that if I donate $15, only 15¢ goes to help cancer victims?"

caller: "I can hardly hear you, you're breaking up. If you can hear me, I'll have a supervisor call you back..."
me: "Yeah, sure, thanks..."

This woman certainly was very professional and well trained. Every time I was negative, she steered the conversation back to "can we count on your support?"  She really did try to get me to donate but finally gave up.

They last called on 26 November 2013 and on 21 May 2013 and we went through the same conversation about such a small amount  going to the charity and now with two refusals under my belt, I certainly don't want to have them call me again in the near future.

Wasting their time is what they most dread. If they're on with you and fail to secure a donation, they potentially miss out because they're not calling some other sucker.

Side Note

I try to record these calls using Google Voice, but this particular call came in on our other phone number so I wasn't able to record the call.

A cheerful woman asked for me by first name and then launched a cordial appeal for me to make a donation in response to what I'd receive in the mail.  I calmly began to tell her that one of her people had called me last week.  I continued with my standard reply that I don't acknowledge telephone solicitations, but I believe she hung up before I got to that point.

I called the number back and got a recording which said that I had reached the Breast Cancer Financial Fund.  So I think it's a legitimate charity, but Googling that name doesn't produce an exact hit but only slight variations on it.  Reports on the variations criticize the use of funds.  Example:

Cancer Fund of America/Breast Cancer Financial Assistance Fund:  The Cancer Fund of America was started in 1984 to raise funds for research and cancer treatment.  However, instead actually paying for cancer patients expenses the charity collects donated goods and ships them across the country to dying patients and their families who have gone broke due to the massive expense they have burdened trying to battle cancer.  The Cancer Fund of America has paid $80.4 million to solicitors, $17.6 million for overhead, $891,812 to direct cash aid.
