They just called me not to long ago and it was about a online payday loan which I found out was a scam. The thing is my computer was compromised and ALL my info stolen so for the last couple of months I've been closing things and trying to get ahold of the people responsible for this loan I did not apply for. They avoided me at all cost. Mr. Sokol talked to me and said I didn't go through the correct process of filing a claim against SSM Group LLC. However from what my bank told me I did everything correct.

If they ever call tell them you have a number for the person they're looking for and give them 1-985-655-2500. That's the Rick Roll Hotline, they never call back after you give them that.

If they are just a collection agency, they need to be licensed in your State to do so.  In Illinois, he is not licensed.  Google your " your state" " professional license look up" then find the state agency that handles licenses and look for him.  If they are not licensed in your state they can be fined big bucks.  Simply go to your State - States Attorney website and take 5 minutes and fill out a complain form and they will take it from there.

Please dont ever do that again. Dont let these jerks scare you. The info provided on this page is very helpful. I would never pay a debt collector. The issue has passed out of first persons hand and to take you to court would expose them. It is called harassment and you should never let them do that to you. Ignore em. If worse came to worse the most that would happen is the court would order you to make payments. I appreciate your trying to do right thing though. These people are predators, be careful next time.

Thankyou all of the above, I know how to proceed now with this person and their calls. I received money I did not authorize into my bank account. Of course being in need I used it...hey I need a bail out just like everyone else. Anyway. I left a msg back and told them to contact me through the mail as I have no phone. By law they have to stop calling. Even it is a real attorney if they threaten you they are in the wrong. Once the debt is handed to another agency the first agency is basically out of the picture. So proceed with caution on these parasites of the human form. Thanks again

In the fine print of the payday lenders they say if you dont pay them back its as if you wrote them a bad check. Since the promise to pay is with your check or debit card. Sucks but thats the deal

Debt Collector Will Pay $1.75 Million to Settle FTC Charges
Ignored Consumers? Disputes Without Checking Its Information for Accuracy
To resolve Federal Trade Commission charges, one of the nation?s largest debt collectors will pay $1.75 million for allegedly making repeated telephone calls to collect from the wrong person, to collect the wrong amount, or both. The settlement is the second largest civil penalty obtained by the FTC in a debt collection case.

?Debt collectors had better make sure their information is accurate, or they could end up paying a big penalty,? said David Vladeck, Director of the FTC?s Bureau of Consumer Protection. ?There is no excuse for trying to collect debt from someone if you can?t confirm that they actually owe it.?

According to the FTC?s complaint, between 2006 and at least 2008, Allied Interstate, Inc. continued collection efforts even after consumers told the company they did not owe the debt, without verifying the accuracy of the disputed information. Allied is a Minnesota corporation that works out of offices in the United States, Canada, India, and the Philippines. The company also allegedly made improper harassing phone calls to consumers, using abusive language or calling many times a day for weeks or months, sometimes hanging up when the calls were answered. In addition, the complaint charges that Allied made repeat calls to third parties seeking to locate a consumer, revealed alleged debts to third parties without the consumers? consent or court permission, and threatened legal action against consumers it did not intend to take. The complaint alleges that these practices violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.

In addition to the monetary penalty, the proposed consent decree requires Allied to take specific steps whenever (1) a consumer disputes that he or she owes the debt or the amount of the debt, or (2) a reasonable person would consider the information on which Allied is relying to collect the debt to be implausible, facially unreliable, or missing essential information. In either circumstance, Allied must either close the account and end collection efforts or suspend collection until it has conducted a reasonable investigation and verified that its information about the debt is accurate and complete. If Allied cannot substantiate that the consumer owes the debt, the company cannot sell the debt or provide it to any business other than the client from which it obtained the debt.

The consent decree also bars Allied from:

Making false statements to collect a debt or obtain information about a consumer;
Making claims that a debt is owed or about the amount without a reasonable basis;
Asking a third party for a consumer?s location information more than once without that third party?s consent or a reasonable belief that the person?s earlier response was wrong or incomplete and that the person now has correct location information;
Communicating with third parties about a consumer?s debt without the consumer?s consent or court permission;
Using obscene or profane language or harassing consumers with repeated phone calls;
Making any other false or misleading statement in collecting a debt, including threatening action it does not intend to take; and
Violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
The Commission vote to authorize staff to refer the complaint and the consent decree to the Department of Justice for filing was 5-0. The documents were filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

NOTE: The Commission authorizes the filing of a complaint when it has ?reason to believe?
that the law has been or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest. The complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendants have actually violated the law. Consent decrees are for settlement purposes only and do not constitute an admission by the defendant of a law violation. Consent decrees are subject to court approval and have the force of law when signed by the judge.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC?s online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 1,800 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The FTC?s Web site provides free information on a variety of consumer topics.

Guys, get a lawyer that specializes in the FDCPA and let them handle it.  If they are good at what they do, they will do it for no cost out of your pocket, they will collect their fees from the Debt Collector and maybe get you some money in the process.  Larry Smith and Associates, an attorney out of Chicago, IL is really good and will work for you.  He has helped me in the past and is working on the the bogus Law Offices of William Sokol for me now.

I have talked to Jim, Mrs Williams, and all others you all spoke with. They would not stop contacting me at work, calling my phone several times per day. I HAD taken out a pay day loan off the internet and SSM and Paragon (illegal ghost loan companies from overseas) got ahold of my information and deposited like 200 into my acct....there was NO information for me to get ahold of them. I asked the "law office" to send me proof that I had applied for loans from this company and had signed anything. They told me this would be too late and by this point I would have a judgement filed against me. Jim told me that if I did not make payment arragements by 4 pm they were filing judgement and would contact my work would collect money from my paychecks. He already had all my banking information etc. I was VERY scared and upset and did not want a judgement. I told him if they were lawyers at all they would know that this kind of ghost loan is illegal and he said "illegal or not if you dont pay us you will be in big trouble with the law and might go to jail." I was scared, and so I paid them...over a thousand dollars for less than 400 in payday loans that I did not even request! I was furious, I wish I would have read this website sooner. I feel like we should all get together and file a lawsuit against this company and whatever illegal pay day companies they represent.

I received an email from Jim from the law firm. Said that I had to settle my debt on the next pay day via ach, check or credit card. I told him that I had not heard of him and was not going to give him any information over the phone. I asked him to send me something in writing and he said it would be too late by then. He then proceeded to inquire if I had direct deposit of my pay and what day was that on and tried to verify my social security number. I again told him I have not heard of him or his office and would not verify anything. Also he was trying to settle what was a $200 dept for like $430 and I told him he must be high!
