The caller said he was Jean Chretien..........wanted to give me 2600 air miles.......I could not completely understand all of what he was saying
A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven.
Jean Chretien

Received a call from them @ 8:18am. I ignored it, as I do all phone #s I don't recognize. I assume it's spam or a telemarketer that's received my # without my knowledge.

Number called my cell at 10:50 am this morning.
I did not answer and they did not leave a message.
So much for the Do Not Call laws.

I received a phone call from this number earlier in the day to my Virgin mobile phone - didnt answer the call since my phone is text only service lol - they can keep calling it - I won't ever be answering it.
Glad to know it's a scam - I was a bit freaked out that someone was calling my text phone... which is private name private number.... and the bit about the grid was interesting... thanks for the info :)

Never answer a number you don't have register in your phone if its really important they will leave a message for you to call them back.
| Noct 2012-08-16 00:09:24 Unknown |
These phone companies will also sell your active number to these telemarketing companies, who will call you. Answering doesn't so much tell them the number is active, they already know that, but at what time of day you are likely to pick up the phone.
As for government accountability... they have much bigger and simpler issues that they have no idea how to solve.

Stupid calls, they should not be allowed to call anyone, let alone cell phones, this costed me money and I am at work. It said I won over 2000 Air Miles.

They are selling "trips" to Florida, because your word of mouth is incredibly powerful advertising. I have no knowledge if this is indeed a scam, but it sure rings of one. Their offer is only available for the duration of the call.... (but don't worry, they will call back a hundred times).
As always I kept them on the line for 20 minutes. That is 20 minutes that they couldn't be calling someone else. ;)
| Dee 2012-08-14 23:11:35 Unknown |
No one replied when I said Hello. I saved as "DO NOT ANWSER" in my phone and directed it straight to voicemail.

Just got a call, they hung up after I answered.

They get your cell number by having a computer dial a pattern of numbers and they sequentially eliminate dead numbers or active numbers. Get a phone call with no one there and it hangs up? You just told their computer there is somebody at that number. Sometimes they're just calling to create a list of active numbers that they can sell, other times the computer is supposed to transfer you to a telemarketer, but no one is available, so it hangs up and flags your number for a call back (which of course will hang up on you again if no telemarketer is available. What an enjoyable loop of harassment that is).
When I was in high school I answered an ad that promised nearly four times minimum wage, it turned out to be a telemarketing job and the wage in the ad was based on a near impossible to reach quota. This was before computers did the dialing, so they gave us a piece of paper with a partial phone number on it (eg. 613-555-50XX) and on the rest of the sheet was a grid from 00 to 99. We would dial the partial number and combine it with the number on the grid (eg.613-555-5000, 613-555-5001) and indicate if someone answered the phone (in which case we tried to sell them some coupons), an answering machine (which was marked for a call back), business, or inactive number. Using this grid you would also end up calling unlisted numbers, which really pissed people off. That was my first and only shift in the telemarketing industry. What a s****y job.
It was shady then and it is shadier now with VOIP numbers and Caller ID spoofing. I add numbers to my block list (*60 on a Shaw Phone), but eventually you run out of slots (32 is the max). I also created a contact called "Don't Answer" on my cell phone and assigned it a silent ring tone, adding numbers I don't recognize where a Google search brings me to a page like this one. Next time they call, it won't disturb me, I'll just notice a missed call from "Don't Answer" next time I pick up my phone. But still, I shouldn't have to do all that. Most people I know don't answer their phones unless they recognize the number because the harassment from scammers is becoming a daily ordeal.
The government should bring some accountability to the VOIP providers and telephone companies, but a doubt any politician has the balls.
