The caller congratulates you on your job application - the one you posted in Craigslist or some other job application site - being accepted. Sometimes they ask for a fee. Sometimes they will send you a check as an "advance payment". All you have to do is reply, and send them a lot of personal information. Now the bad part: the scammer can use that personal information to steal your identity. Any "fee" you send will soon disappear. The check they might have sent will bounce. There are several variations to this scam

Read this for info on accepting fake checks:
http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/news/cnwin0607/scams.html

Pay particular attention to this line:
"In these cases, the depositor most likely will be held responsible for the entire amount of the fraudulent check. "

Thanks for your response regarding the "Residential Cleaner" and sorry for responding late,I'm Alex Heywan and My wife's name is Mitchell. We are relocating to the City from Miami,Florida to Wisconsin with our children Martins and Samantha.I have been transferred to head my company branch over there,so I will need someone who could help me in taking care of the apartment by doing some house work while i am off to work because we are expecting our third child soon and it will be very stressful for my wife to do the cleaning.

I will be offering you $350 weekly,I will be needing your services for 5 hours at any suitable time of yours, making a total of 10hours a week since i will be needing your services for 2 days of the week.I believe you are fit for this position in as much you will prove yourself to be a reliable and good person, My company's headquarter will take care of all your payments and other expenses too, so I will instruct them to pay for the first week before our arrival so as to secure your service, actually if i am satisfied with your service after the first week,i shall make it weekly and with time make provision for an increase in the payment.

They will be making out a check to you before our arrival, you will be receiving a check out of which you will be deducting your pay of $350 for the first week and you will be using the remaining to buy groceries and other things needed in the apartment ,you will be getting this foodstuff on the day of our arrival which is on the 6th of April 2014...Actually our flight will arrive at night so you will be getting the groceries in the morning and making all other preparations.I will also instruct my Realtor to mail the keys of the apartment to you as soon as the  renovation work is completed so that you can do all other necessary preparations before we arrive. The apartment is located at N Clairemont Ave, Eau Claire, WI. I will also email you the shopping list.

You have to get all the shopping ready before our arrival so that we wont have to start running around when we arrive, So I would be needing the following Information from you to make out the check to you.

Got same scam. Sounded too good to be true and feel like an idiot; strapped for money and jumped at the job. Sent me a check for $2400 saying he and his wife and 2 children (one on the way), would be arriving this Sunday (April 6, 2014).  Never gave me an exact address, requested supplies and groceries, I was supposed to deduct $350 from the $2400 for my advanced pay and would be on company payroll. Received a check from New York for a company based in Malaysia, from a DEAD WOMAN (Carol Spadoni) whom was killed back in the 1990's. The offer was 10 hours a week CLEANING.

SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM! Be wary! It could happen to anyone!

I got the same thing from Ricardo and Ariel Amandamila.  I was told they would move here from California (wife, husband, 5 year old, 2 year old and baby on the way) and he was being transferred by his company (Northrop Grumman Information Technology) that would pay for me to be a nanny for his family. I was told I would get a check that I needed to deposit immediately and $300.00 would be mine for 1 weeks worth of taking care of the kids and grocery shopping. The rest of the money would be to set up their apartment (in a college town so college sized apartment) before they got here. I got a cashiers check for $2400.00. A friend told me to call the bank and see if the check was real. I called, gave them the check number and the name that was on there and they told me the check was not valid. I texted the Amamandmilas and told then about the check and they said they did not believe me so I got my friend to text them and tell them what I said was true. They came back to me and said they would straighten it out and send me another check to deposit. I got that check 2 days later by UPS and called the bank and it said the check was valid. I got so excited and then my Mom searched their names down and this phone number came up and is the exact same phone number they used. So my Mom called me and read all of the testimonials to me and told me to call the Sherriff and ask for the fraud division. The Sherriff told her to tear up the check, not communicate with the people anymore and change my phone number. They also told me that they have been after these same people from this phone number for a long time but they just keep changing their email addresses and stop for a while and then start back up doing this again. They also told me to go on Craigslist and make a report with them. I hope this helps anyone out in this situation. These people are preying on real people that need real jobs to help themselves. How common can you be? Just thieves.

yes this happened to me as well. my roommate recently got involved in a scam, so I was very careful. he said he was moving into an apartment with his 2 kids and wife (expecting a 3rd) and never gave me an exact address, just a street name. I didn't make sense that he would live in a college student size apartment with 3 kids when he was willing to pay me 300 a week to grocery shop.

This is to everyone who responded to the scammers' craigslist ads:
What was the email address you replied to (if it was a Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/Live/Outlook address, not a craigslist address)?
What email addresses did the scammers use in their reply?

My boyfriend had actually got this email and thought it would be perfect for us to start since we are college kids and are strapped for cash. This couple actually was a female couple with the names of Heather and Shauna Waybright moving from San Fran to Canton, Ohio. We had got the email stating that the package had arrived but my instinct told me to look them up first. No facebook, no google information, nothing. This is an exact copy of what they sent to us:

I do appreciate your response regarding the part-time errand position and sorry for responding late, my name is Heather and my wife's name is Shauna Waybright. We are relocating from San Francisco, California to Ohio with our twin sons Nathan and Ethan. I have been transferred to head my company branch over there, so I will need someone who could help me in taking care of the apartment by doing some house work while i am off to work because we are expecting our third child soon and it will be very stressful for my wife to do the cleaning.

Actually our flight from California will arrive at night so you will be getting the groceries in the morning and making all other preparations. I will also instruct my Realtor to mail the keys of the apartment to you as soon as the renovation work is completed so that you can do all other necessary preparations before we arrive. The apartment is located at Independence Cir Nw, North Canton, OH, 44720. I will also email you the shopping list.

We ended up looking up the address in which they did not even give to us fully; just a street. It ended up being a shopping plaza not apartments.

Here's a paste/copy of the most recent attempt in the Hilton Head area. They're getting more elaborate. The original post came from Craigslist and l replied with my name and number and l asked for more information. l received this email and a text. l texted back to no response. Then l called this number to a Google answering system. So l left a message. lol l didn't leave any personal information either. Thank God! And thank you all for posting on this as well. Glad they didn't get me. :)

I got a text from this number as well this guy had an ad on Craigslist for house cleaning. I responded cause my wife and I run a cleaning service. Next thing I get a text about how much he would pay and that he would send a check out first and so on. Well with out meeting him face to face or walking through the house and so on I am not doing this. Now with finding this all out on here I sure am not doing this. They really have some nerve doing this to people wow.
