I have a link for you, there are many more.  http://www.fdcpa.me/west-asset-management-ftc-settlement/. Yes, people should pay their bills, but have you not read the newspapers, listened to the news, or even looked out your own window?  People are losing their jobs left and right, there is no money out there.  Oh, and btw, while federal loans may never become zombie debts, others that WAM try to collect are, and even federal loan collections must abide by the law when being collected.  You mentioned you were tired of paying your hard earned tax dollars for free loaders, guess what, we all pay our hard earned tax dollars to the government, oh, and maybe you should complain to those government entities that decided to bail out banks for the same damn thing, owing debt, that WMA is collecting for.

I was contacted by this company numerous times, and have settled my student loan "debt" three years ago. Although, if West Asset Management is contracted by the Federal Government and the Dept of Education. Why be so unprofessional and rude to collect? We all know of no government which stands to its obligations, even in its own despite, more solidly can make mistakes. I explained the loan was paid off, and allowed them to verify information, impolitely. They verified and re-verified, incorrect information, and when I asked to speak with upper management, the cold call got worse! I was asked for SSN, birth date, etc, and telling the supervisor all the information was already given. He hung up on me!! I assume They were asking for another person with the same name as mine. "Get another profession if you hate being the collector is my advice"...

They are a very abusive collection agency. I have had three phone calls from this agency in the last week. They demand payment as you speak to them, wanting you to give them your credit card and your bank checking account numbers. And in doing so they yell at you in demanding this payment as asap. The phone number I found on the computer comes back to a cell phone in Glendale,Az., the number is 623-238-6092, thats the same as my caller id. has shown. Asked them about this, said they had no idea or would not comment.

I would just like to say thanks to all those that sent comments for all of us to learn from. I just believe that when other people are finding fault with others, you are setting yourself up to experience what those other person went through that caused them to be in default in the first place. how do we know why someone has not paid their bills. Anything, can happen to anyone, at any given time, and there is no guarantee that you are going to make it all the way to the finish line before you fall on your face. You might have a good job ,and be able to pay your bills today, but, all you have is right now, there is no guarantee of tomorrow. So, these people who are collecting and harassing people for a living, be careful that you don't fall, somewhere alone the way. You only get back what you send out. I agree that people should pay their debts, but circumstances happen! all some ,can do, is get by, with the necessary things that are needed in life. Be careful how you throw stones.calling people dead beats; maybe you need to walk a mile in their shoes. All kinds of things have caused people to default on student loans. Maybe, like me, they offered to pay what they could because they didn't get a job for what they went to school for, and did not make enough to pay more than fifty dollars a month. But i was refused,, and told i had to pay more. Every time i tried to pay, it wasn't enough. Now, the department of education is taking the money out of my retirement check. Why? because i did not talk to the department of education.I talked to a collection agent, and was told they were the department of education. I made a dumb mistake ,to trust what someone else told me over the phone. Do your own home work.  don't let any, human being, make you feel bad,if you are in default. You know your life better than anyone else.If you could have paid, and didn't, that is a dead beat. You know it was wrong. But, if you have learned from your choice, except responsibility for your actions and take the pill of your own actions. The most important thing in life is to learn from you choices, and keep moving forward. Be Blessed!

Yes, these people are quite rude, but most collection agencies are. Most of the people calling are just there to get a paycheck, and that's it. I'm sure they've all heard every sad story imaginable, and probably don't have a lot of sympathy. I do know, however, that this company does not just collect for student loans. They are getting payments from me for medical bills right now. Second, they do not collect just old bills. My bills are from May of last year. And third, maybe some of you could lighten up a bit and stop referring to those who can't pay their bills as "deadbeats". I understand that there are people out there that think the world owes them something, and they are nothing but a drain on society. They work the system, and we have to bear the weight as prices inflate to cover their unpaid bills. Not all of us are that way though. Crap happens........and sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. You hit a rough spot. Many of us have been there. Sometimes you just keep getting kicked when your down, and can never get ahead. That doesn't make us losers. I was sick last year off an on for several months. I had a lot of medical bills, and I couldn't afford to pay them all. All that had to happen was for one to make it to collections. I couldn't afford to pay collections and the hospital both, so I had to request they all be sent to collections. That was the only way I could have just one payment. I work 2 jobs so I can pay my bills and go to school part-time, and I pay as many bills timely as I can. I don't appreciate being called a deadbeat because there were situations and events I couldn't control and weren't prepared for. Just remember, there are two sides to every story.

You don't have to answer the phone and deal with West Asset Management. If you're dealing with a complicated student loan issue, you need to speak to the Department of Education directly.  For example, they may be trying to collect on a loan that you don't owe. Many students are hounded for loans that were taken out, but they withdrew in a timely manner from school and should have received a refund on that loan. This is called an unpaid refund, and you should contact the Department of Education at 1-800-621-3115 and ask for an application to receive this refund.  Mistakes could have been made when loans were being sold off, and now years later the Department of Education suddenly believes you owe them thousands of dollars in fees and interest.  Ask the Department of Education for an administrative review in writing.  Write to US Department of Education, PO Box 5609, Greenville, TX 75403. West Asset Management is simply there to bully you into paying money which you may not owe. They haven't the intelligence nor the information needed to solve a difficult student loan issue.  A helpful website for those with student loan issues is studentloanborrowerassistance.org.   Don't pay money you don't actually owe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My advice to you is if this companies number is coming up on you caller ID, don't avoid the call, and answer your phone. West Asset is contracted by the Federal Gov and the Dept of Education to collect on your defaulted student loans. Take it from someone who knows! Yes, they are demanding, but you borrowed the money. Stop avoiding the issue, cooperate with them, and pay your debt. As far as it being a "Zombie Debt"... Hate to tell you people this, but there is no such thing when it comes to owing the Federal Government. No statue of limitations, can't file bankruptcy on it,and you can either pay voluntarily, or they will take it involuntarily. EX:Wage Garnishment, Tax Offsets, and just when you think you can retire, even your SS. Whats even worse, while you continue to avoid the issue, what was a $4,000 debt is accumulating, accumulating, and accumulating with penalties and interest, and has now grown to a whopping $10,000 debt all because you didn't answer your phone. Im sure you've all heard the expression "Big Brother Is Watching",and "You can run, but you can't hide" All stands true when it comes to this company, so answer the phone, be cooperative, pay back your debt, and they won't need to harass you anymore. If you ask me the cacaroaches, theives, and vigilante justice comments should be reserved for those of you who think you can borrow money, and not pay it back. Personally, I'm tired of paying my hard earned tax dollars for you free loaders!

West Asset Management called me in regards to a student loan, at first i thought it was a fraud then i called the department of education @ 18006213115, they then advise me that ihad to go threw West Asset to take care of the debt if i wasn't paying the balance. The DOE also advised me that way wages, taxes and once i become disable if my disabilty check is over $750, all could be garnish, once they advie me of that. I ask what was the agency number, i called the agent and settle the account out for less than the balance, which i am glad i did so know i don't have to worry about those calls. So my advise for all the people with the negative comment pay your bills and you don't have to worry about it because student loans don't have no statute of limitations on it. It may come off your credit in 7 years of coarse because that is the law. But the debt never go any where and no you can't file bankruptcy because it's none dischargeable. So until next time america dead beats who want pay their debt, also the angency told me DOCTORS & ATTORNEYS never pay their that. Now it should be a law agaisnt that.

West Asset Management calls me from various numbers like 1-903-891-7100; 1-623-238-6092;1-888-628-1592 and 1-888-433-2886 at vaious times of day.  You are right they are trying to collect on a debt that has passed the statute of limitations and trying to do ID theft by threatening me and my family into paying what we on't owe so they can line their pockets with money and lies.  Don't answer any of these numbers.  Thanks.

They are hounding ME at my place of employment for a debt incurred by my husband PRIOR to our marriage.  I have told them time and time again to leave me alone and they do not.  I have told them my employer does not want them calling my job and they still call.  They are rude and obnoxious and have yelled at me on more than one occasion, including today when someone called.

I answered the phone and they asked to speak to my husband.  I asked who was calling and he said "TONY" ...I said from where...and he said ATLANTA.  I asked about the evasive answers and he yelled at me, demanding to know who I was.  I told him I was the wife of the person he was looking for and that he and his company had been told NOT to call my job many times.  He said this was a contact number for my husband and I told him it was my JOB.   He said he took me off the list and asked me to relay a message to my husband.

He said his name was   TONY TURNER and could be reached at 1-888-821-0027 ext 4722.  I told him that this has nothing to do with me and that it happened WAY before I knew my husband and he agreed and said I was off the list.  (BTW, I have heard that before and realize they will probably call again)

I googled the phone number and got the above info regarding this company.

BEWARE IT'S  A DEBT COLLECTOR!!!  EVEN WORSE IT'S A ZOMBIE.   ZOMBIES ARE  OLD DEBT THAT THE CREDITOR HAS SOLD--for pennies on the dollar-- to companies such as WEST ASSET MANAGEMENT.   THEY HARASS AND THREATENED PEOPLE IN TO PAYMENT AGREEMENTS.   THE TRICK IS, THE ZOMBIES DON'T HAVE ANY LEGAL RECOURSE TO COLLECT ON SAID DEBT.  THIS IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW.  THEY WILL TRY TO PUT NEGATIVE MARKS ON YOUR CREDIT HISTORY, BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CONTEST IT AND THE CREDIT HISTORY COMPANIES WILL REMOVE IT.  DO NOT CALL THEIR TOLL FREE NUMBERS.

LIKE I SAID, IT IS OLD DEBT.  OLD DEBT THAT IS MORE THAN 7 YEARS OLD THAT HAS PASSED THE STATUE OF LIMITATIONS.  THE ZOMBIE COMPANIES BUY IT CHEAPLY FROM THE OLD CREDITORS AND TRY TO HARASS YOU INTO A PAYMENT AGREEMENT.  YOU ARE SAFE AS LONG AS YOU DON'T AGREE TO A PAYMENT AGREEMENT.  ONE YOU ENTER A PAYMENT AGREEMENT WITH THESE ZOMBIES, THE DEBT BECOMES BRAND NEW AND LEGAL.  THEY ARE CALLED ZOMBIES BECAUSE THEY ARE OLD DEBT RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD.

Got a call from this # at home asking for my son.  I told them he did not live here and she sounded surprised. I asked what she needed and she said that Tanya needed to speak to him.  Asked for a # for him.  I gave her his cell, but I think I gave it wrong, because it was strange to get a call for him here.  He just applied for fiancial aid (grants only) and I see now that this is just a scam to get to him.  He does not owe anything to anyone. I called him and told him about the call and he had me look it up. He knows now to be aware of this caller and so do I.  This is just crazy.  I have some words for her if she calls back and I won't be nice.

The feds don't employ them. Whatever lending institution issued the loan probably turned the loan over to West Asset. The student loan isn't issued by the federal government. Rather, the loan made by the lending institution is guaranteed by the federal government. In effect, the federal government co-signs, so to speak, each student loan. If the person receiving the loan can't or won't pay the loan back to the lending institution, then, ultimately, the federal government (i.e. taxpayers) must pay it.

That aside, West Asset must follow the law when trying to collect the debt. You can read up on your rights at Fair-debt-collection.com

Um, the U.S. Dept of Education doesn't make student loans.  Banks do.

As a matter of fact, the U.S. Dept of Education has never educated a single person. If you doubt that, ask yourself how people in this country managed to get an education prior to the founding of the U.S. Dept. of Education in 1979.

What a bunch of rude, nasty morons. I told them i had x amount of money to send monthly for student loans, end of story.
Some "manager" gets on the line, uninvited, and says "your debt is 12 yrs old...aren't you ashamed? That's pathetic!

I couldn't believe it. And they think i'm gonna give them MONEY after that? I asked him his name, and told him i would consider calling him back after i calmed down. They call all the time, and evade all my suggestions for payment.
I CANNOT believe the federal government employs these people.

If you failed to pay back a school loan at any time in the past, please be advised that our #@%&#^% Republican government took away the statute of limitations as far as school loans -- they want their money and they can hound you until the day you die.

My question is:  Did the Dept of Education sell the old debt to West Asset or do they still own the debt?  Anybody know?
