Debt Collector
Got a call from Anderson Law Associates stated that I had 3 criminal charges against me and that they would be taking me to court. Like many of you I was very worried because I did get a payday loan and may or may not have paid it I really dont remember. Anyway I called Greenpath Debt Solutions because I wanted to know what I could do to get this cleared up and keep me out of jail. What I was told was that these are usually collection calls and they can take you to court but they can not come to your job and arrest you (like they told me they were going to) and they have to serve you with court papers and you have 30 days to respond. I called them today and I asked for the lawyer on the case and the case number they gave me both. I then asked to speak to the lawyer on the case and was put on hold. When the line picked up it was the same person who put me on hold only now he was making his voice deeper trying to sound different. I told him I wanted to speak to the lawyer on the case and was told that they dont have to prove anything to me and that I would be arrested at work on Monday. I tried to call back hoping to get this problem solved of course because i do want to cooperate with these law abidding citizens (insert sarcasm) but off course they are no longer answering my calls.

Attention all who are contacted by these people do not be fooled and know your rights. This is a scam and a debt collection agency trying to scare you into sending them money. Do not fall for it! If you need debt help I do highly recommend Green Path Debt Solutions (no I do not work for them) but they are fantastic.

I received calls from this number posing as Michael Carter/Anderson Law.  They said they are suing me for a payday loan and they were surprised I knew nothing of my court date.  I settled for $900. 3 days later I never received the documentation they promised.  I thought this was real because they had my info and I did take out a loan. Come to find out there are 100's of complaints about these people.  I called the credit card processing "Law Firm" Sanders Law and demanded a refund.  They said they will refund the money but it will take 3 days.  I signed a release form for the charges on a debit card but never said anything about disputing the charges.  I got scammed..this is crazt.

Bossman...DO NOT BE THREATENED BY THESE CRIMINALS!   They almost had me as well, but it just didnt make sense.  Read up on the "fair debt collection practices act" and you will know your rights as a consumer.  you will know what by law a collector has to provide.  these people told me they were taking me to court and i was going to go to jail if i didnt pay.  they will know info about you that makes you think its real but they are hackers and obtain that info illegally.  DO NOT LET THEM SCARE YOU.  Tell them you are recording the call and you know they are a scam.  They called me from 626-467-0164 (Anderson Law, Michael Carter & Adam).  Also do not trust anyone from Sanders Law either.  A debt collector has to by law provide you with info on the original debt, amount, original company and so on.  They told me that they cant give me info on payday loans.  They are crap.  Report the number to the FBI tip line and your state attorney generals office.  DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY

I just got a call this morning at 9 a.m PST. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I got a call from Anderson Law Firm. I was so scared and shaking that I almost cried and I am 20 years old, a grown man. I was about to walk into class until they told I have three criminal charges pending against me and that I will be served with a subpoena by tomorrow morning. I agreed to just lay down and comply with whatever they said so that the matter would not be taken to court. They of course had my last four digits of my social and everything else that distinguishes me in this country and that's when I thought they were a legit law firm. But when I asked for the address they only told me they are located in San Francisco, CA and would not give me the rest. I asked for documents and they said they would be sent via email and I said I dont do transactions over the computer please send me a hard copy. After that, they blew up and had a temper tantrum and said "See you in court sir." I think ithis is a scam but can someone please help me because I am a student-athlete and I can't deal with this nonsense if this is fake. Their telephone number was (562)684-4999. Thanks

i received calls from 626-467-0461 - Anderson Law - Michael Carter Attorney, who is always at the "courthouse" when I try to contact him.  They knew all my information, I mean ALL my info.  They were surprised that I knew nothing of a court date that week.  They threatened to file all sorts of law suites and press felony charges.  They said they tryed to contact me via email 15 times.  They promised documentation that I never received and couldnt even tell me the companys name who hired them.  All they kept saying was it was for Insta Cash.  I was so scared, I set up arrangements for settlement.  Once I did some research on them and read all these complaints it all made sense.  They are crooks.  After calling for days, I finally reached someone at "Sanders Law", apparently they handle all the credit card processing.  This guy was an a**.  No way a professional at a law firm talks how he does.  As of right now, my money is coming back to me but it takes 3 days.  We will see.  But anyone out there who receives a call from them.....Tell them you are recording the call and ask for documentation on the debt.

I have also been contacted by a man that stated his name was David Jones and the number that he gave me was 626-467-0164,  he first stated that he needed my attorneys name and number and then he stated that i owed a payday loan company a lot of money and that he would have the police come to my office and arrest me if I did not agree to pay the money.  He went as far as asking for my checking account information, which I did not give to him.  When I asked him for information on the debt he said that he could not send me the information that he would just send the papers to my employer and have them send him my paycheck.  I want to thank god, that i searched the web and found the information from others in the same regards.  I have all ready contacted the FBI and the Governor.

It won't do any good to report them to the BBB. Do the following:

From Lamet's post:

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

To register a complaint with the Kansas Attorney General?s Consumer Protection Division, call 1(800) 432-2310 or visit www.ksag.org.

This is a scam.  They called me today, as well as about 6 months ago.  I went to my local police department where they told me to report them to the Federal Credit Bureau, which I did.  DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY or let them intimidate you.  If they call, tell them the call is being recorded and that they have been reported to your police department, "Adam" so he calls himself, will hang up.
