Same company did the same as well. I called them and they said they would send a refund for ten charges still have not received anything at all. It is fraud and identity theft. I signed up for spokeo as well but read every detail and no where did it explain an additional fee. I only had spoken for three days canceled before the thirty days and deactivated my account. This is wrong taking small increments of money and not knowing if your money is safe in the bank as well.

I too had the same problem with Spokeo and SmarterPrivacy and am filing Rip Off reports and filing fraud reports. They should be persecuted.

I signed up for Spokeo one time only. They continued the charges after they sent an electronic cancellation. My Bank was informed, they disputed the charges with the company. I cancelled my credit card, and got another. My computer began acting slow, brought it to my tech guy and he found a keylogger placed in the system. It was Spokeo, they took the credit card number again, I changed it. I began receiving hoax emails on my home email, scam phone calls from Microsoft, my bank, my Internet provider.

Last night at midnight, I got a second call from a fake Microsoft. Scammers wanting to get into my computer system and fix a problem. Place more keylogging programs I imagine. Of course I denied them, and could not trace their number. I had to go wash my hands afterwards, after just talking to the creeps.

I've reported them to my credit card company.

When you sign up for Spokeo, evidently you get signed up for another service by "Smarter Privacy" which shows up as PRIVPRO on your statements. You get no notification or confirmation that you have been signed up. I contacted Spokeo's billing rep Khiana and told her I was receiving fraudulent charges and that I was able to trace it back to them. After initially denying any involvement, I mentioned PRIVPRO and she told me about their partnership. I got put on hold momentarily so she could contact them, and when she returned she explained that all charges back 1 year would be reversed and that they will send me a check in the mail.

When asked if there was anything else she could do for me, I asked her if she was aware she worked for scam artists, to which she simply replied, "have a nice day" and hung up the phone.

I called my CC company to relay all of this information to them and they've flagged these guys and it sounds like they may open up an investigation.

Don't sign up for Spokeo.

hello folks, i have just found out that spokeo has been taking out of my account $14,85 per month for something i have never authorized for how long i will find out tomorrow when i go to my Bank. there is another charge of $14,95 going to some / privpro an i will find out about that too. i have been going thru Chemo for 6 months an i haven't been up to watching my account as well as i should. boy i tell u all, ck your bank debits very closely, ok. sincerely, Les

Carri, this also happened to me on my PayPal account, I had canceled  Spokeo and figured that was it.  I was searching for something else on PayPal and ran across all these paid out payments to Privpro every month
then I filed a complaint with PayPal, they followed up and sure enough someone had fraudletly authorized them to pay out.  PayPal did refund my credit card the charges . . . . .

Yes, I am definately interested in the class action lawsuit you mentioned !!

I also just noticed these charges on my credit card. I signed up for a 1-time no subscription use of Spokeo back in October 2012, then was charged 14.95/month for 4 months before I notice. I called the number on my credit card charge (the phone number is the name of the company on the credit card record). I know I specifically cancelled my account the same day I made it in October because I know otherwise my 'free trial' would roll over. I know I didn't not sign up for this IdentityFraud service. I asked for my subscription to be cancelled (again, since I know I did it online 5 months ago), and asked for a refund of all 4 months I was charged. Apparently they must refund 1 month electronically and the other 3 months will be mailed to me as a cheque....(weird...we'll see if that happens...)....
Anyway, huge scam.

Same thing. But after calling today, they said we would get full refund from Spokeo and PrivPro. There are about $200. in unathorized charges to my husband's debit card by the 2 related companies. We'll see - I was pretty tough with them as this has happened before to my 86 year old husband. They require a "cancellation" of fees within 30 days of initial contact where they began their unrequested "service."

I called spokeo at 626-396-9499 (billing dept) and they are the sister company with privacy centeral (smart privacy). They claimed I must have subscribed to 30 day trail then would be automatically charged every month $14.95 thereafter. I signed up for spokeo and cancelled the same day even got an email. I told him why would I pay for this identity charge when my spokeo acct is cancelled. Sam (employee) stated he would submit request for me to get refund.Will see it within 3-4 business days.

I cancelled my SPOKEO account months ago and yesterday I had a charge for 14.95 from SPOKEO, INC, PASADENA, CA.  When I called customer service, they told me I had "accidently" signed up for some identity program, which I did not.  I think it is bs and you are automatically enrolled without knowing. I told her I wanted a contact phone number because I wanted my money back for a program I did not sign up for. She put me on hold and then told me she was "forwarding" the information to this identity program and I would be refunded today for the amount.  So if the two supposedly are not connected, how am I able to get a response and refund so quickly?  Unbelievable...

Spokeo is Deffinently it!  I called "smarterprivacy.com" and they told me when I signed up for Spokeo, I also signed up for their service.  Such a scam!!!  I told them I not only want to be removed from the program that I did not knowingly authorize, but that I wanted a refund as well.  Here is their number:
1-800-285-7748.  They will ask for the last four digits of the card you used to purchase Spokeo.  Piss me off!  The nerve!  Good luck!  XO

P.S.  I also put in for a dispute with my VISA.  Takes 30 friggin days!

Same here. My chargers were to SMARTPRI which is smarterprivacy.com, but my bank did not have that info. I have filed a complaint with the FTC. Spokeo says they will refund my money, but they deny that what they are doing is either unauthorized or misleading.

They got me too. They automatically signed me up for this identity theft program when I joined SPOKEO. They claimed that I clicked 2 times to join but I know I did not. I told them that I did not join the identity theft program and they claim I did. I'm filing a cyber crime report and sending them this link.

This is from Spokeo... When you sign up for a Spokeo account they start you on a free trial for Identity Theft and then start charging you after the time period is up.  
I was able to call and cancell the account..
