Microsoft does not call people. Criminals who want to take control of your computer do.

Received a call on 4/4/14 from an Indian accented man claiming to be from Microsoft saying they had received problem reports from my PC (reporting is not enabled on my PC).  He wanted me to follow his instructions to open up access to my PC for him.  I asked him twice to prove that he was from Microsoft but each time he ignored me and kept on with his script of instructions.  I cut the call.  I live in Spain and I do not believe Microsoft know my home telephone number but clearly he had some information that I was an English speaker on a Spanish 'phone line.

I received a call from 630-859-9404 at 10:33 AM, Dec. 14,  A guy with an accent identified his self as James from the refund department and said he wanted to refund $130.00 to me because they were no longer able to provide the service I had paid $240.00 for at some time.  I stalled him by telling him I couldn't hear him well and with his accent was unable to understand what he was saying.  He said he would call me from a different line.  I checked the number he was calling from and got a recording of a disconnected number.  He called back from 818-239-1450 - the same results.  He them called from 847-537-9793.  He wanted me to open my PC for him so he could refund the money.  I told him to just send a check and he said they could only refund it into the same card account they got it from.  I knew what transaction he was referring to and told him I would not open my PC to him, at which time he informed me he couldn't refund any money if he couldn't get into my PC.  I told him I had a nephew that worked for Windows and I would call him, at which time he assured me I didn't need to do that and he hung up. - These people need to be gut shot and put on display.

I got the call from 630-859-9404 wanting to talk to me about my computer last night.  He had an accent that sounded like he was from India.  I received the same kind of call several months ago.  They want you to get on your computer and click on the letters they tell you to click on.  It's a scam and I believe allows them to hack into your computer.  I told him he was a scammer and to never call my number again.  He hung up on me.  I then called his number back and I got a recording saying the number is no longer in service or disconnected.  I hate telemarketing and scammers and it never seems to stop.

I too had a call like the two above. I played along asking for names (MARK) with an extremely strong ethnic accent. I let Mark ramble on! I then told him that I am a Police investigator, and had Investigated a number of this exact scam....Brrrrrrr...the phone was slammed down. I then traced the number and tried to call back to speak to Mark within in about three minutes, and low and behold the number was disconnected.

Yes a definite scam.  There is an article about these scammers on Microsoft's webesite:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx

Seems to be all the rage in India or Pakistan these days.  Too bad one of our Predator Drones can't take out the call center where these criminals work from.

This number called me at 10:14 PM!!!! saying my computer was downloading harmful files... and I was connected to a windows server. She kept saying she could confirm my windows ID after doing a few things she said (first was run:cmd) which I didn't do. I told her if she was who she said she was, and I was connected to server like she said I was, she could give my my windows product ID number (as its listed under your system information). She gave me some random number, I told her it was incorrect, and I went off on her (knowing this was a scam). SHe hung up on me.

I just got a call from these scammers too, but no more!
You're already on the DNC lists in Canada or USA. You've filed the complaint and still they call you, right?
You want to know what you can do to stop it... Nothing. You can't. You can only block them.
I just added this area code (Illinois USA)  to my blocked numbers list since I don't know anyone there.

I now have a call-blocking box that works in the USA and Canada that can block up to 200 entries.
These can be complete numbers, complete area code exchanges, and even "unknown name & number".
Now you too can block such scammers and telemarketers.
They call once and you add their number to the box. Now they are blocked.
Next time they call, your phone will only ring once as the call is intercepted and disconnected.
Don't know anyone in a particular area code? Block them all!

Want to get one to protect your phone or get one for a friend? $90 + shipping and tax.
See my ebay listing here:

Need more information? Email me if interested at Call-Blocker@hotmail.com
I promise not to call.

I just received a call from this number, telling me that they were calling about my Windows computer.  I told the man that I don't have a computer.  He asked if I had a laptop.  After assuring him that I had no computers (as "I don't run Windows" has never worked in the past), he asked my age.  I told him my age was none of his business and, when he began to insist that it was, I lost all patience, told him to stop scamming people to steal their identities, made an anatomically improbable suggestion and hung up on him.  Often, these guys call back several times, but this one didn't.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

Person from this number has called me three times so far today, says it is about my windows computer, I accidently fell for this about 6 months and ended up being the victim of identity theft.  I ended up reporting them to the RCMP, and went thru hell fixing everything. Do not under any circumstances let anyone from this number have access to your computers, they will screw them up beyond belief.

Got two calls from this number. At first a lot of background noise with yelling. Then a guy starts to tell me that my pc is sending error messages to his servers. He then wants to rmote into my pc and fix the problem, of course it's going to cost. I hung up.    The second call I just hung up and then tried to call the number back. Recording states that number is disconnected or no longer in use. Sounded like a scam to me.
