I keep getting these calls also from different numbers. The one today was also from David Williams. He said this was in reguards to a legal action against my social security number. He transfered me to his supervisor. The first time the wait was a min or so and I hung up. He called right back and transfered me again. I was pissed by this time and I admit I did cuss at him but he said he was with a law firm but then after I talked over him and said I have spoken with the BBB and checked online and I know this is a scam, he said he was not a lawyer and that's when I cornered him and said so you are lying because you just said you were. He said he would be sending the sheriff to my address. Does changing your number stop this?? They could at least get someone with out an accent to make it more believable.

This is an offshore criminal extortion scam that has been going on for over five years. The fraudersters are using disposable cell phones, Skype and VOIP so their calls cannot be traced. The next time they call inform them you are aware that this is a scam, have reported them to your local law enforcement, the FBI
(www.ic3.gov), your attorney and hang up.

The FTC is about 5-6 years behind on their information, for thiis extortion scam has been going on since 2007 (or longer):

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Some fraudsters have instructed victims to fax a statement agreeing to pay a certain amount, on a specific date, via a pre-paid Visa card. The statement further declares the victim will never dispute the debt.

If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller?s instructions. Rather, you should:

Notify your banking institutions.
Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger.
File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

Never give your Social Security number?or personal information of any kind?over the telephone or online unless you initiate the contact.
Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information. The e-mail may include upsetting or exciting but false statements to get you to react immediately.
Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that request personal information.
Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.
Check your bank, credit, and debit card statements regularly to make sure that there are no unauthorized transactions. If anything looks suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
When you contact companies, use numbers provided on the back of cards or statements

Received 2 messages on 2/17 from this number, this person also called my work # 3 times & my home # 7 times in an hour and a half time frame.  This is a SCAM - I immediately reported this number to the FTC hotline at 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).  The FTC informed me that a large payday loan database got hacked back in December and people's personal information compromised, this included names, addresses, phone numbers, SSN's.  It is always best to report any threatening or harassing calls to the FTC and also local law enforcement as this is an attempt at fraud.  The person calling spoke with a very thick East Indian or Middle Eastern accent with poor grammar.  I believe he claimed his name was "George Smith".  This is the 6th different scam attempt using various numbers from people directed towards me claiming to represent either a law firm, criminal justice division, a credit bureau agency or a debt collection company since this database got hacked.  It's just getting ridiculous.

Do not pay them. Do not call them back. They are Phishing for your card number. They did the same thing to my friend and to me. I told her to call the Attorney generals office to report the threat. You should be aware that they may have your social security number as they did have mine and hers too. Check with your local police department about what to do about what is considered as a harassment call. you may be able to file a report or they may direct you somewhere else.

I received a call from a man stating his name was David Smith (how generic is that) and he said I had a debt to a payday loan company. Although I have taken out a payday loan before, it is recent and in good standing to be paid on my next check on 02/20. I have contacted them to ensure that my account is still in good standing and they advised me that my payment plan has not changed and they do not expect payment from me until at least Monday, which is the 20th. They also read off my Social Security number to me and it was correct. Now I am worried that other people may have my Social Security number and I don't know what to do. I called a friend and she said to report it to the Attorney Generals office and to google search the number that was on my caller id, so I did and found this list of people that have had the same problem.  I am not sure what steps I can take next to protect my identity. Anyway, that's the story :(

been getting calls and threatening messages from this number saying legal action will fallow if i dont pay some fee. and since i have ignored their calls they are going to send police to my house and or place of work to arrest me..... i laughed at the dumb bi*** when i did talk to her and informed her that i know she is BSing me since my Father is a 32 year LAPD member and still on the force, I then proceeded to tell her that i have begun a police report/investigation against them.... since then i have only recieved one call but they refuse to leave a message saying anything threatening..... unfortunatly for the lady who left the threatening message i saved it and did turn that in to the police to see if they could help me.... i was later informed through my Father that she lost her job and is facing criminal charges now for such drastic threats and hurrasment. The justice system has worked once again.

oh and to add how do these people even get ur info especially when i (and possibly others) have never touched any website associated with payday loans or check advances?

Bess:  If you have applied for a payday or auto loan, they got your info from that process.  They steal the data as it is passing through cyberspace unfortunately.  They have no ability to take money from you unless you give them a credit card.  That's all they want.  They called me last week as well, threatened me with jail if I didn't pay, and after I accused them of being scam artists, they told me not to worry as the police were on their way.  If you have the time, just continue to call them to disrupt their activity. Every minute they spend being harrassed is one less minute they have to swindle an innocent victim.

I received a few calls from this number.  Man with an indian accent ended up cursing at me because I laughed when he said he was with the Credit Bureau of Investigation and they are investigating me for check, bank, and credit card fraud.  I pay my bills so I told he must have the wrong information. What scared me is he had my social from somewhere.  I hung up the phone.  I'm a bit worried, but my credit to debt ratio is maxed with my house and student loans...they won't get far with my credit.
