she said she was AAA, and took my payment via debit card.  She knew when my account had closed and had my ol' member number.    Oh, stupid me.  I called AAA and they had me listed as still inactive, no knowledge of the call source, and had no record of the payment.  The kind rep went so far as to look in 'New Members' yet still came up with nothing.     Then he Googled the number and said 'oh oh'.
I called the bank, blocked the card and went to the local branch to get at temp replacement card.   whew.

Event Reminder
Received a call from this # today and googled the number before the voicemail popped up.  It is indeed AAA with renewal information.  My membership is up in February/March so they are trying to provide me with new information to think about before time to renew.

Talked to caller.  It is a third party site for AAA Memberships that have lapsed.   I called my local  AAA office to renew instead and received a much lower rate.

I don't answer calls from unrecognized numbers and they left no message. It could be AAA, like others have said. My membership expires in a couple of months.

I think its a scam.  I have prepaid for two years of AAA and they called a number I know I didn't provide them.

Prank Call
Scammer.  They called me at work (the real AAA doesn't have my work number, but it's online) and offered to help me renew my membership and take payment, which I'd already done months ago (even have a new card already).  They asked for my card number and information.  Neither the number they called from or the number they left on my vm is associated with AAA.

Debt Collector
Used to work for a dept like this.  It's actually very easy to get them to stop calling, but remember the person on the other end of the phone is doing this because AAA is making them do it that way.  They have no control over who they call or when they call, that's totally automated.  A computer does all that.  This also corresponds to how often they call.  It's a human being on the other end of the phone who is empathizing with your disgust, but this is what they can do to make money to feed and house their families in a bad economy.  Some teleworkers even have master's degrees, and they have to do this to supplement their income!  Many teleworkers are physically disabled, too.  So when you are snarky, grumpy, short, or just plain mean to someone over the phone, not only are you ruining their day (not AAA's day, who you are actually annoyed with), your interfering with someone trying to do their job.  They have a limited amount of time they can talk to you (anyone on the phone does, it's factored into their quality assurance score), as the boss figures the more people they talk to, the better.  So trust me, they don't want to be hanging on the phone forever, just a few minutes, tops.  Also, another key thing is it is NOT solicitation or telemarketing by the rule books if you had service with them in the past.  Your DNC registery is completely futile, here.  Same thing for any other company that you've dealt with them or their partners.  Now some individual companies have an INTERNAL DNC list you can request to be on.  What AAA is doing is called "retention."  They want to "retain" your membership.  This is not soliciting.  Now, here's the easiest, fairest way to get them to stop.  I figured this out when I was on your end of the phone.  They will tell you why they're calling and offer you a special.  You decline.  Don't hang up.  They need to know why, and they also need to tell you why your reason might be a huge financial mistake.  Maybe it won't be a financial mis-step for you, but they don't know that, moreover AAA doesn't know that.  This probably AAA's way of finding out what they need to do to keep members renewing.  You might even be doing yourself a favor by making them see any error in their ways!  When they're done, just say something like, "I understand, but I just would rather not do it this year.  I'm sorry, I hope you have a great night."  Wait for them to say have a great night, thanks for having been a member, and hang up on a good note.  Don't be the jerk that went out of his/her way to make their day at work miserable.  If you don't answer, they will call back, over and over and over and over.  If you hang up on them, they will keep calling.  If you refuse to tell them why you're not going to go with AAA or don't give them a chance to tell you what you might be missing out on, they probably do call back, but I'm not sure if they do or not since I don't do that to them.  If you never did business with them, perhaps the member gave them the wrong number?  Maybe that WAS the customer's number, and they changed numbers and now you have it  (I used to work for a phone company, and if a number is disconnected it's put into a deactivated pool and anyone can get assigned that as their new number).  Just answer the phone and see who they ask for.  Tell them it's the wrong number if it is.  Also, if it's not leaving a message on your machine, it could be that a live person might have to make the message come on, that might take a few seconds, and if your machine hangs up if it doesn't hear anything. . .well.  Same goes for ones that want someone to hit # at the end.  If it's a recording, well, recordings don't push #.   Remember, positivity does a lot more good then negativity, and the person on the other end of the phone, as much as you'd like to think, they are not the source of your annoyance, they are merely a pawn in it.  Be nice to them.  They are just as upset about it as you are.

Received a call saying they wanted to renew my expired AAA Auto Club membership.  Seem to be truthful but I cannot confirm this from an outside source this evening.  I will not do any financial business over the phone when I do not initiate the call.  Will try to confirm during business hours.
