Got a call from someone with (predictably) a heavy Indian accent saying they were from Yellow Pages wanting to update the company's information and asked for a manager. Annoying.

The caller ID simply says Name Unavailable or Restricted.

I have owned my own business for several years and these people just keep calling. They will call from different numbers so blocking them is near impossible. I advertise in AT&T Yellow Pages, Yellowbook, and the local Verizon phone book called Supermedia and these people aren't affiliated with any of them.  From what I have learned, they are a scam. They "verify" your info and then try to claim you owe them money.  As far as I can tell it is a true scam with no actual listings anywhere.  You're actual yellow page companies renew your listing with you in your yearly contracts so they will have no reason to contact you. If they do contact you then they will say it's AT&T, Yellowbook, Supermedia etc.  So if someone calls and just keeps saying "It's the same listing with us that you have every year!"- they are full of it- just hang up.

They've called several times.  We have the ability to block numbers and they have been added to our blocked caller list.  Caller ID says "Asterisk" and lists the number as 642-563-4105.  As already reported, there is no 642 area code.  The real number is 877-307-8442.  (As reported by our phone service)  Never do business with someone that tries to hide their identity.

As an aside, I actually get junk mail addressed to "Richard Smith" from junk mail advertisers who have bought info from the fake yellow page telescammers. It really helps me sort out the junk mail faster. Bonus!

I have a couple of ways to deal with these parasites. First, I let the phone ring three full times before I pick up. I pick up and don't say anything for 2-3 seconds. If it is a computer autodialer, 80-90% of the time the computer will hang up thinking it has gotten a voice mail or answering machine. After 2-3 seconds, I say our company name, but don't give out my name. That way they don't automatically have a name if they call back and get someone else. If I still get a person and they insist, I tell them my name is "Richard Smith"(it's not). It is none of their business what my real name is, they are telescammers who are breaking the law. If they persist in calling over and over again, I tell them that my boss is available, and then I use a sports air horn right next to the phone. What are they going to do, sue me? "Your Honor, I was illegally telescamming and they deafened me!" Good luck with THAT argument. The judge might give me a medal. Reporting these "people"(I use that term loosely) to the Do Not Call Registry is futile, they are usually spoofing their phone number anyway. If you have the time, have some fun with them. See how long they will stay on hold or still be on the line if you put the phone down. Take your cordless into the bathroom and have an extended "deposit" at the Porcelain Bank, complete with very loud fake sound effects. Tell them you ARE the boss and listen to their sales pitch, never saying yes to anything, but always saying that you will look at your numbers and see what you can do. Some scammers will record any affirmative answer you give and then splice it into a call and bill you for whatever they are selling, using that as evidence of an order. Waste as much of their time as you can, because that keeps them from scamming other people, and it can be a really fun stress reliever! Anything that we can do to make this less profitable for these ticks on the butt of humanity is a plus. Feel free to pass this on or add to it with your fun ways of taking back your phone lines. If these idiots would get a real job, the world would be a better place for all of us.

So, I get the dead air calls also suddenly. A few years ago I was getting the yellow pages call with the $400 offer, etc... 2 times a day everyday. It occurred to me one day, that if they were under the impression they had called a residential number that one of the callers would eventually take me off their list altogether. It took a few more days but I told them each time that they had reached a house phone and it stopped within a week.

Do not give these people any corrected business information. They have no affiliation with Yellowbook, AT&T, or YP Yellow Pages. Usually within a few weeks after the call, you will receive an invoice or collection calls from them demanding $400-$600 for their service of listing your business. This is a fraudulent company.

Lady verifies my business name and address and asks if I want to add email and fax, makes it appear that listing is free and at the end only upon asking if this was free speaks out reading fast about some 499/- fee . Told her she has to mention about the fee first, talks very rudely threatens to take off listing and hangs up.

The guy was from India, and said he wanted to verify our yellow pages listing.  We don't have one.  I said thanks and goodbye.  I tried to put the number on my CallBlock list, and it cannot be added.  It says the number is invalid.

They want to "renew" your on-line yellow pages info. We have not had this service before, but they keep telling me we have. When I ask if they represent AT&T they give some vague answer about how AT&T are the phone provider and they are the Yellow Pages provider. Finally told them I cn't authorize the expenditure(for the third time). Waiting to see if they call back.

Like everyone I get phony calls so I set my answering machine up to pick up at the beginning of the second ring.... if its someone that knows me they just start talking and I answer but if its a telemarketer or just annoying call... they hang up... I heard these guys dial a few numbers at a time and whoever picks up first is the one they try to convince to buy something or whatever... I like to waste their time as they want to waste mine...

Simplest way to handle the call: tell them "there is no business at this number." That's what I did and never heard from them again.

Opps, forgot to warn about NATIONAL YELLOW PAGES. These people will mail business's a renewal for their yellow page ad requesting to add the business email address. The renewal notice looks identical to the yellow page logo and is easily mistaken as your normal notice.

Last year I filled this out, mailed it and got an invoice for $360.00. In timy print I saw the word 'National' under the fradulant copy of the logo. I shot off a letter stating misrepresentation and a few choice words to the company and Poof, got a letter back cancelling my bill.

You you realize that with email, direct mail, peddler and phone combined, we get upt to 75-100 solitations a day?

I own a business with a land line, a cell and a unlisted home number. All 3 are listed with National Do Not CAll. This does absolutely no good. The solitation calls are escalating to 4-5 a day. I don't give them any information and if I get a voice tell them do not call again. This is annoying as (*&(*(*^, interupts business and is getting out of control. What can be done to stop this, other than vent?

I get calls from this number at least 3 times a week and at least once a week I get a fax from them.  They claim to be the yellow pages and want me to advertise (when they call) and their faxes state we owe them money for our ads which is BS because we only advertise with AT&T and no other book.  Every time I get a phone call the person has a very heavy Indian accent so I am guessing they are calling from India.  Guess the U.S. is really good at outsourcing everything including their scamming telemarketing crap!

This was a call from "John Brown," (obviously from somewhere in India) who insists that we already use his yellow pages service "each and every year." The price he quoted is NOT what we pay for yellow page listings, nor could he confirm our actual account number. Unfortunately, I did use the word "correct" at one point, since at that time in the conversation I was not yet suspicious, since we do have yellow page service with AT&T, and a lot of companies unfortunately use people from India to conduct business for them.
