I just got a new phone line bundled in my internet plan from the cable company.
Within an hour of the line being connected, the call comes in from this number:
"congratulations you won a free cruise"
Seems I have gotten a recycled phone number.

646-265-8678.  in Reply to the post from 'Washington State Here'

If this really is a Verizon number that's calling to try to SCAM people and Verizon has decided to do nothing about it, then how about this??   Everyone should Call Forward this # to Verizon.  At some point, Verizon will most likely see literally thousands upon thousands of calls coming into their Call Center from this 646 number.

I'm pretty sure they will notice, because I have called Verizon a number of times in the past, and either couldn't stay on Hold any longer, or something happened to the connection, and by golly a little while later they called me back, much to my surprise!

So, if your phone has Call Forward or even better of course is  Selective Call Forwarding.  Just forward this 646 # to Verizon!  I think at that point, Verizon will absolutely decide to deal with them, don't you???

If only I could spoof my home number so no scammer would think of calling what looks like a Delta Junction, Alaska number ....while all along I am living in a community like Chevy Chase Maryland, or Larkspur, CA which are telemarketer's happy hunting grounds. At least when I did live in the boondocks no telemarketers bothered us at all.

Its like this, a lot of these callers are sitting in foreign country's. Those country's may or may not co-operate. You can't always blame our government for what they have no control over. Most of these numbers are being spoofed as well which also makes it hard to track the criminals.  It isn't CSI on TV, RL doesn't happen in a hour.

Scammers trying to steal ID and Credit Card information.  Our government will not make an effort to put an end to these scammers.  The FTC and FBI and Holder need to get off their butts and arrest some real criminals.

They won't stop.  Your best bet is a call blocker.  And the scammers generally don't visit this site.  Protect yourself.

You might have to have all your parents calls come to your phone to screen them.  My dad lived to be 96 and almost got talked into buying something one day.  His generation was taught to be polite.  It costs more to have an unlisted number but I got fewer calls this way.  Something to consider.  I think the technology is here to block all unwanted call but if we were allowed to do so the phone companies would lose the business of the scammers.

@Tired, the DNC list stops *legitimate* (law-abiding) telemarketers from calling. (Note that it does NOT apply to surveys, charities, or political calls.) So by definition, any telemarketer who ignores the DNC and calls anyway, is by definition, *illegitimate* (and law-breaking). Do you want to do business with them?
I simply do not answer the phone unless (1) the caller is identified, AND (2) I want to talk to that person. Otherwise it just goes to voicemail and 99% of the time, they don't leave a message. You do NOT have to answer the phone just because it rings. If it's legitimate and important, they WILL leave a message. Oh, and, do NOT EVER call them back. That establishes a business relationship and gives them legal permission to continue to call you. That is one reason you are getting more of these calls. I only get about two or three calls a day, and about two-thirds of them are charities or political calls. The rest are these kinds of scammers.

Consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.  The list can not protect you from the illegals callers so you need to step up and take action also yourself. Do not answer or call back numbers you do not recognize.

Report the calls appropriately:

I have been on the "Do Not Call" list for about 5 years!  Each year I keep getting MORE calls! "List" doesn't seem to work!

I had 2 calls from  646-265-8678 in about 3 minutes!  I called back and got the "Verizon" message.  Sick of these calls!

It's getting to the point that I'm going to have to forward all of my parent's calls to my number so I can control who is attempting to scam them.  In part AT&T has to take responsibility for allowing these illegal scam calls to continue.  Everyone should be given unlimited area code numbers and individual numbers to block.  AT&T doesn't do that and should be held to a partial responsibility for ID theft of their customers.  I see a class action lawsuit in the making.

A free trip on the SS Titanic II with 1000 virgins to the Bahamas plus all the food I can eat. How lucky can you get. Just answer a few short questions about my sex life, what I eat, bank accounts and what I drink plus give then my SS# and credit card info which is refundable. The Nigerian woman from Texas said they would send out the free tickets in a week. Its my luck day.  Its a brand new ship she told me. 800,000 thousand tons of fun.
