I have been getting these calls for over a month, on my cell AND work.  I can't have this anymore.  Only once did I ask what this was about and it was pertaining to some bogus payday loan that I never paid back and that I need to have my attorney call them. One time he even mentioned some threat against my SS#, but his accent was so thick, I wasn't quite sure what this SHAWN WILLIAMS was even saying half the time!

I finally filed a complaint with the FBI today... I hope it works. http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx

they keep calling my home and work saying I owe money but refuse to give information for the company I supposedly owe money to, and only threatened to sue me. when I informed Him (Derek Anderson) that he legally was required to give me all the information for the Company (ie. address, phone, and acct. #) that I supposedly owe money to he got all irate with me and stated that, that information wasn't required and that they would sue me in court. They also have a middle Eastern accent, I believe they are scammers!!!!

ONE DAY HE'S AL SOMETHING, THE NEXT DAY HE'S PAUL SMITH. HE CHANGES HIS NAME ALL THE TIME, BUT I'VE HAD ABOUT 20 CALLS FROM THIS MAN WITH AN INDIAN ACCENT. HE SAYS ON MY ANSWERING MACHINE THAT THE SECOND I GET HIS CALL TO HAVE ME OR MY ATTOURNEY CALL HIM BACK. IT'S ABOUT AN URGENT MATTER. THAT I MAY GO TO JAIL, ETC. HE ALWAYS SAYS AT THE END "IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO CONTACT ME WELL THEN THAT'S ALL I CAN DO IS TO WISH YOU LUCK" HE'S EVEN CALLED MY WORKPLACE. I HAVE NO PAY DAY LOAN, BUT WAS BRIEFLY ON A LOAN SITE WHERE I ERASED MY INFO TYPED IN BEFORE CLOSING IT AND CHANGING MY MIND. GUESS EVEN THAT ALONE WAS TOO MUCH INFO. I'D LIKE TO BE INCLUDED IN ANY FORM OF CLASS ACTION SUIT BEING BROUGHT AGAINST THIS GUY - OR HIS EMPLOYER!

I had the 6463811992 call me and he said his name was Ron and that i supposedly got a cash advance loan from a website. And that he has charges filed against me and said it was from March 2012. And i advise him that he was full of it. And that he was a scam er that he wasn't going to get any money from me. And that if he didn't stop calling my phone I would get him for harassment. And the guy didn't like that. There has to be something done about this.

I received a call from them today. Funny thing about it, they called me not knowing that I was an FBI Agent, it kind of spooked him, and he disconnected the call. Tried to call back serial times and no answer. Funny when they don't know who they are dealing with.

One leg of this scam has been shut down:

Even scam artists are outsourcing. On Tuesday in its first crackdown on fraudulent telemarketing in South Asia, the Federal Trade Commission announced that it was shutting down two California-based companies that used a call center in India to defraud Americans out of more than $5 million over the past two years.

Workers in India made threatening calls to Americans getting them to pay money on debts that they didn't owe, the FTC charges. At an FTC press conference in Chicago on Tuesday, fraud victim JanLaree DeJulius explained that she had received a call from someone claiming to be an enforcement officer from the (phony) "Federal Department of Crime and Prevention," who threatened to have her arrested and have her wages garnished if she didn't pay a bill of more than $730. The scam artists had gotten her name and information from a payday loan her ex-husband had taken out in her name.

"It was very embarrassing," Dejulius said. "He knew everything about me so I agreed to set up an installment." She is not alone. According to the FTC, more than 8 million calls were made since 2010 and at least 17,000 transactions processed across the United States related to the global scam.

On Tuesday under request from the FTC, a U.S. District Court in Chicago stopped the international operation, charging Varang K. Thaker and two companies he owned, American Credit Crunchers, LLC, and an affiliate Ebeeze, LLC, with violating the FTC Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

"This is a brazen operation based on pure fraud, and the FTC is committed to shutting it down," said David Vladeck, director of the FTC's consumer protection bureau. "Consumers should not be pressured into paying debt they don't remember owing. Legitimate debt collectors must provide consumers with both written information about the debt, and instructions for protecting themselves if they don't think they owe the debt."

According to the FTC's charges, Thaker used Social Security numbers and bank account numbers obtained from payday lenders to identify the victims for his scam. He outsourced the work to an Indian call center, where workers made threatening calls to American consumers to pay fake debt or collect on bills for which they were not authorized.

Thaker was not available when contacted by telephone on Tuesday. A woman who claimed to be Thaker's older sister and asked not to be named for privacy reasons said he is working with the FTC to help the Indian government pursue the fraudster call center operators. She also said he was innocent in the scam. "He was being used by somebody. He didn't even know where they got the information," she told The Huffington Post by phone. She said that her brother got 10 percent of the earnings from the scam operation.

The FTC charges against Thaker are the latest in a series of police actions by the government agency to put an end to rogue debt collection operations that have become more frequent in the aftermath of the Great Recession. In January, the FTC struck a $2.5-million settlement with debt-buying company Asset Acceptance, LLC, charging that the company had falsely represented itself to customers, including making up phantom debts that customers no longer owed. Last October, the FTC filed a complaint against seven other fraudulent debt collectors, alleging that they had engaged in the same techniques -- demanding money from customers who owed nothing at all.

The growing number of Americans who are unable to pay their bills has meant there are more companies looking to profit from their economic difficulties.

Debt collectors have been taking more aggressive tactics as fewer people are able to make ends meet or are in a cycle of debt. More than 30 million Americans are in debt collection, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Since 2010, more than 4,000 complaints have been filed with the FTC and state attorneys general about fraudulent debt collection calls, the FTC said.

Charles Junitkka, a personal bankruptcy attorney who represents clients in the New York City area, said, "In the last few years, the desperation of the collectors and their efforts have intensified because of the economy."

This story has been updated to reflect comment from a woman who says she is the sister of Varang Thaker. Thaker himself was unavailable for comment.

I received the same call (646-381-1992), and after I told him that I could not understand him, he transferred to a "supervisor", however it sounded like the same person got back on the phone.  I asked them about what loan they were talking about.  He said there would be criminal charges if I did not pay back the payday loan, however I had only looked at the quotes on the internet.  When I told him that I had not taken any loan out, he said that he could file criminal charges again.  I then told him that he sounded Indian or Nigerian, and this was a scam.  He then got very upset and said I am a scam.  So I told him that he called me, and not to call again.  He  got mad and called for days leaving angry messages.  After that I just answered the phone.... started hitting the number buttons to make noise and hung up for a couple of times when he called.  He stopped after that.  This is a scam folks.  Be careful who tries to collect yourmoney for the bills.  These people rip off the retired, the poor, the desperate, the honest, the innocent.  They are evil with no values or heart for others.

Received a call at work today from a gentleman (I use that term loosely) who identified himself as William Connor. I believe this person was calling from India or a call center somewhere but said he was calling about a legal matter and that I must call him back immediately or face the consequences. There was a legal matter regarding my social security number and I was facing federal prosecution.

I am not calling him back but glad this site is here.

I got a similar voice mail earlier.  It sounded very shady to me, so I did some research.  I found this link about scammers in MD doing something similar, threatening law suits against people who had taken out or expressed interest in pay day loans.

http://greatermd.bbb.org/fcdscam/

I recently looked into a pay day loan, but decided against it.  I'm going to call back and attempt to gather more information to see if it is the same type of scam, but I recommend checking out the article, as it gives helpful advice on how to figure out if it is a scam and how to proceed if it is.

Good luck!
