Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

My mother and I were called from this guy Christopher Brown and he threatened me saying he would call my work; and that I needed to call him right away which I did not call.  I have used a cash advance 2 years ago and have paid it off in full.  I was told by a reputable collection agency that the person who calls and demands payment with a green dot card are totally scams and should be reported. I have submitted his phone number to the FTC since then, he changes his name and phone number every 6 months but it is the same person who has my social security and phone number.  I feel so exposed and it is just exhausting to screen all my out of state phone calls.  I have reported it to my local police and block the new numbers.

They are located in India and the Indian government won't do anything.  The US government can't do much either.  If it gets too bad a call blocker might be useful.

I keep getting the same calls. He told me weeks ago that he was going to have the prosecutor office at my job. When I called him back I was told that I would have a warrant for my arrest for writing bad check if I did not produce $400 by 1pm that day.  I asked him what was he collecting.  Not giving me a name of the company or any documents of my return check  I told him not to call my numbers. What is annoying that is he is call me job about 10x a day. The name he is calling himself is Frank Foster.

I just got a phone call from someone with a middle eastern accent, American name...Said I'm going to be served tomorrow at my job on 3 fraud charges! I have no idea what this person is talking about and I'm at a complete loss for words. I'm worried that I may be a victim of identity fraud. I see most of you are/have experienced the same thing. Is this real? Have any of you ever gotten served?

Thank you,

A man by the name of Christopher Brown also called me and said I needed to call the number 646-583-0756 ASAP or I would not be able to use my Social Security benefits in the future. They said I owed money but didnt not give me the amount or the company I owed the money too.  I did NOT call the number back - its interesting that these people have very heavy Indian accents - but have american names - like Smith - Jones - Brown - Snyder === etc   - It is a scam !!!!

I just received the same message yesterday and he said they were located on 100 judge street 3rd floor.  He said I owed 600.00 and wanted me to pay it as well.  I called the New York law department to verify if they had an employee by that name.  The lady on the phone told me that it was scam and they have been doing this to dozen of individuals.  They threaten you however, he was unable to provide me with any type of paperwork or anything until i made the first payment by a green dot card. he called me from the number of 646-583-0756.  so what happen when they never received the number.

It is *highly* unlikely that this call has any foundation in reality. You'd remember having taken out a pay day loan, wouldn't you? (Especially as they're illegal in New York State, if I recall correctly.) And real messages from real lawyers come by mail, not phone.

A man named Christopher Brown called me from this number saying that  he was from the law firm New York City Law Department and said that America Advanced Cash was suing me for about $563 which they want me to pay by today or go to court. I just need to check it out because I don't even remember owing this people anything.

My wife just got one from these guys. They must be passing her number around because for the past 2 months she keeps getting these calls from different "companies" or "attorneys" claiming she owes them money for bogus things. And different phone numbers. All with mid eastern accents. Maybe they are raising funds for al-qaeda or the taliban? Hang up and report them to the Bureau of Consumer Protection at this link: http://www.ftc.gov/about-ftc/bureaus-offices/bureau-consumer-protection
Don't let these guys continue. And don't send them any money. They are bullies and thieves.

We keep getting the same calls. They called my husband at work and told him he is going to be brought up on 4 charges of fraud. My husband asked why we never received mail about this and the guy got all tongue tied saying we have gotten several emails and read of an email address that wasn't even ours. I keep getting calls too, with the same message  "if you do not call me back, all I can do is wish you good luck for what is about to unfold on to you".

I've received several calls from this number all from men with distinctly different voices but same Middle Eastern accent. All are named either Michael or David (with different last names like Green, Smith, Johnson and Clark) They are difficult to understand but all the messages are almost exactly the same, asking for my attorney to call them back (because, you know, everyone in this country has an attorney just waiting at their every beckon call) and all end with "if you do not call me back, all I can do is wish you good luck for what is about to unfold on to you".
To me, that is a threat.
