I can't believe that people actually fall for these scams enough for these people to keep at it. Why would anyone send a stranger money? That just seems like common sense to me.
The numerous grammatical and spelling errors are the first tip off. The second, Using Mr. or Dr., as well as their first and last names seems pretty suspicious and uncommon in most legitimate responses. In addition, it seems the more research I have done about these types of online buyer scams, the more I have discovered that many times the original or subsequent emails, will close with, "Best Regards". I have bought and sold many items through the internet and can not recall one legitimate response ending with such a formal closure as "Best Regards". Providing a number may help the Email appear more legitimate. However, I wanted to talk to the person on the other end, I wanted to see how they tried to scam me over the phone, in a more personal situation.
The man who answered never offered a name, I had to ask if he was the person who sent me the email. He spoke very rough English and seemed to care very little about the car I was selling. Once he explained that he was going to send me a Cashier's Check for the vehicle and that he would take care of the shipping. I expressed to him that I though that what he was saying seemed like a scam. He tried very little to convince me otherwise. In the end I told him "I don't think so" and he accepted saying, "OK, bye, bye."
This is what I was sent from terry_douglas21@yahoo.com: (note the frequent grammar and spelling errors)
My name is Mr. Terry Douglas, I am interested in buying this Truck ASAP, but I can only pay $16,800 flat. Does the Truck have any engine problem or transmition problem? Well call me with this number 647-866-9173, if my offer is acceptable or you can send me email. Thanks Best Regards Terry Douglas

We have had the same thing happen this past week! This hoser tried to pull a fast one on us.

I thought the whole deal sounded too good to be true, so I researched the company from which the cheque was made out, it was a charity! I also searched Kelly's name, and found this website, which reassured me of my suspicions. I wish someone could figure out a way to catch this two faced jerk. I dont think it'd do any good reporting him to the cops, because he's probably not even using his real name. He tried to scam us through kijiji.

I have one of his cheques in my hand as well, I'm calling the cops!  The cheque is made out for $8,980.00 more than it was supposed to be. What a piece of work.  I'm a firm believer in karma!!!

Dito, same Kelly Rothmas tried this on me today too, and on my friend as well. Same M O, This guy is busy! Probably not even a Canadian! Have traced him to Concord Ontario. The address and postal code on the UPS envolope don't match. Spoke to another friend today about this, he had a friend that got burned for a "transport truck". Don't know how people fall for these types of scams. Always telling my kids, if the deal sounds way to good to be true....

Well, I knew this sounded too good so I decided to try and cash the cheque at Money Mart. After the cashier entered the cheque, she said it would take a couple of minutes to clear. I told her I'd come back in a bit. I went across the street to a ScotiaBank (since the cheque says it came from there) and tried to see if they would verify the amount. The teller couldn't.
So I called this jack*** back and asked why did he send more than we agreed on. He says "my secretary sent you the wrong cheque. just cash it and my shipper will take the difference" so when I said it had my name on it so how could it be wrong, he stammed and said he was very busy and had to go. I should mention the guy has a thick accent... sounding like something from an African country by the way he pronounced certain words.

So I head back to the Money Mart and the lady is just staring at me. She asks if I trust this man and I replied, "no, it is the internet" and she tells me the cheque is fraud.
I called him again just now and told him the cheque is fraudulent and he asked who said it was. I told him the bank and he stammed for a moment. Then I told him I turned the cheque into the police and he is being investigated, called him a piece of *crap* and hung up

Wow, thanks for this thread, we had a feeling it was a scam and we said we wanted payment in money order and he still sent a check, so i thought i would double check the internet for info on this guy. We got a hit on our car from the kijiji site as well. Its too bad that there are so many scam artists out there that you seem to not be able to trust anyone anymore.

I received same e-mail from "Kelly Rothmas", word for word same as James Brown.  The e-mail was through my Kijiji Western Canada ad.  When prompted for more info, the e-mailer replied with "you tell me when the cheque clears, and I will pick up the car".  Seems a bit of a stretch from Toronto to Alberta.  Guess if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't.

Got an email from this clown this morning.  I'm trying to sell a car on the West Coast of Canada and a phone number from Ontario.  Used the same statements as others have mentioned.  When someone from out of my area code is sending me an email for a rather large purchase, the flags start flying.
The email adress is Kelly.Rothmas@yahoo.ca
No James Brown this time.

Not surprising American classes only teach about American grammar and its own history.

Well, for starters... the thing that should send up red flags is, if you really are selling your car, that CHECK is spelled "cheque". I could be wrong here folks (its been known to happen), but I was pretty good in my English classes... and I dont recall the stack of paper things you get from your bank that are directly connected to your bank account EVER being spelled "cheque". Unless, of course, its a non-American version of the spelling.

Always check spelling, punctuation and grammar on these emails, theres almost always something wrong with it.

Ya, I got the same type of request...What I believe the scam goes like this.
1. Let's say you are selling your car for $5,000.
2. You provide your name and address.
3. This person will send you a cheque payable to you for, let's say $15,000.
4. You type an email back asking about the amount.
5. This person says, "oh I made a mistake on the price, can you just cash the cheque and take you $5,000 and send me the rest.
6. You do as he says.
7. The cheque is acutally an intercepted cheque that was sent in the mail.
8. The cheque has been altered and is actually a company cheqe from a legit company.
9. You cash the cheque in your bank account and send the rest of the money back to this person.
10. You are now under investigation because the fraudulant cheque has been traced back to your bank account.
11. You have no idea where and to whom you have sent the $10,000 dollars to and this person gets off scott free.
12. You end up being investigated by the police for fraud and or theft.

This is a SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!
