I posted a reply about the debt collector calling about your credit card bills.   I didn't realize when I was posting that it wasn't going to reply to you.    Read if you want, and good luck.

Debt Collector
They have been calling me as well.  Not sure what it is about, probably a medical bill (since we have alot of those).   We have paid most of our cc's, it's the medical bills that still seem to haunt us.    FYI - the 7 years debt thing is a bit of a misconception.  I thought the same thing, as I had a small bill when I was younger (just out of college), it was a $300 JcPenney credit card bill.   I thought it was going to disappear after 7 years on my credit.  That is not true.  It is 7 years from the last time it has been "updated/touched/reported on" on your credit.   If they don't update for 6 yrs & 11 months, and then report to your credit that it is still "OUTSTANDING/OWED", it will stay on there forever if they keep updating it.    You might want to look into your options.  But, I learned the hard way, there is no way to skirt CC's.  However, there are alot of options to reduce the amount you owe.  I figured out from my one HSBC credit card (GM) that as long as I was "current" with my payment, they were not willing to offer me any type of reduced interest or program to help get it paid off.   As soon as I was PAST DUE more than 60 days, they offered up a program, 0% interest and an affordable payment.  Now 4 yrs into my payment plan of a nearly $10,000 credit card bill, it is nearing payoff now.   We got 0% interest, as long as we NEVER missed a payment.   Our payment was only $134 per month and as I said, no interest and no fees, as long as we paid on time, we won't fall off the "plan".   It was well worth it.    One other CC we had offered us a "settlement" to pay a fairly large payment in 3 or 6 payments, and then they "wrote-off" the other portion, we got something like a 50% payment, and they wrote off 50% of our balance (it was $7,800 I think) and we had to pay $1142 payment (3 of them).  You just need to ask about repayment plans and how to settle with them.  It is much cheaper than any attorney, credit counseling agency and you can do it all yourself.   I was fortunate enough to run into someone with one of our several credit cards that pointed me in the direction of settling my own.   I tackled them all at once and got them all straightened out, and now 4 yrs later we are almost debt free (aside from mortgage).  It seemed overwhelming at the time, and no way out of nearly $30k in credit card debt following my loss of employment for almost 2 yrs.   Good Luck.
