Was contacted by someone who would not provide his last name and was only interested in knowing what my salary was.
When I politely declined to share this information he had no further interest in speaking with me.

Thank you all ... I updated my resume on Monster yesterday and sure received a phone call today for a Jay with the following voice message
"Hi, this is Jay, I'm calling about your resume. Please call me at your convenience. At (650) 641-0755. Thank you and I'm looking forward to your call. Bye."
Since I do not answer phone calls unless I recognize the caller, SHE left a voice message. I checked this site, and sure enough ... it is the same people. The only way we can avoid scams is by sharing information.
Good luck to all ...

About my resume
Julian Gould 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
I'm presently living and working in Italy and this morning I updated my Monster resume. Sure enough, eight hours later a certain 'John' calls from the 650 641 0755 number to my home number in Washington DC...These guys are quick. I have a feeling there are lot of other 'Johns' out there just waiting to scam some innocent soul. BEWARE.
Ciao

John called me twice (both of my nubers) and said that he wanted to talk to me about my resume. After reading these comments, I deleted the message.

Got the call from "John." After a fairly boilerplate talk to set up a time to talk with the real "executive recruiter" he mentioned the $5k fee just before he hung up. Thanks, but no thanks.
tpaine 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Hi, just got the call from "John". Not worth calling back. thanks
Dave 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
This firm calls you after seeing your resume on Monster/Careerbuilder. They want to sell you their career marketing services. Beware.
David 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Thanks for the tip, I also got the first name call after refreshing my resume on Monster. It sounded pretty shady as legitimate recruiters will always leave a company name and usually a last name.
JD 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Got the same call from "John" at ACT. Did not want to give me an email with details that would allow me to verify his information. He said the opportunities change minute-to-minute. I would say caution should be the watch word for sure.
Soto 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Same here ... I didn't answer but caller ID showed up and I wondered who it was. Thanks for the tips, it seems like a bottom feeder.
MLC 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Returned call and sure enough, everyone here is correct. Bottom line, they are marketeers. BTW, The "John" who answered and verified his name is the not same John who called.
mp 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
Got a call from an individual who only identified himself as John. Wanted to know salary requirements once I told him he said they only work with people making over $150k and hung up. Company name was ACT.
Thomas 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
As soon as you refresh your Monster resume/profile it triggers phone calls from boiler-room scammers like "John."
rand 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
also got a call from this recruiter following an update of my monster file.
Mike 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
I received a call today from a gentleman who claimed to have seen my resume and wanted to set up a "telephone conference with senior executives sometime next Tuesday". I asked where he got my resume and he said "we work with monster.com". I asked if he had a job he was looking to fill and he said "we have several excellent positions". I said "and who pays your fee?" He said "the candidate pays".
I said thanks but no thanks.
This is just a scam in my opinion. What decent executive is going to pay someone to find them a job? Let the employer pay it.
PJ Atlanta 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
More of the same from me. I received a call today from 650-641-0755, when I answered, the man said his name was john, and he was calling about my resume and if this was a good time to talk. Since I had just applied for a another position elsewhere, I said yes, thinking that it was related.
He asked if I had time this thursday to talk with one of their executives. I was excited, and said sure. What company was this for again, I asked, thinking maybe this was a professional search firm that the company sent my resume to.
He said "ACT" (and spelled it out for me, LOL) "it doesn't stand for anything, it's just the name of the company." I replied, wait a second I haven't applied for any positions with ACT. He then proceeded to give me "the story."
"We're an executive marketing and placement firm, we help you market you skills and match you with the right companies and positions."
I asked what companies, and he kept asking if I was free thrusday. When I asked if they were fee based (i.e. candidate pays), or retained (employer pays), he said fee based. I said no thanks and hung up.
NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, E-V-E-R pay a companay to find you a job. E-V-E-R. Ever.
SA 2011-06-06 20:53:46 Unknown
I had the same experience with John as other folks. Be careful. You do not need to spend money to find a job. If the employer needs you, they will call. Stay with Retained search firm.

Check out Better Business Bureau (BBB) at http://www.bbb.org/boston/business-reviews/ca ... bago-me-111792/
www.ceopresident.net appears to be a legitimate company based in NY. The location of the person calling me checked out (he was in Florida).

I listened to the whole pitch, then pitched "Hal Jones" - who said he started the firm in 1980 - on a partnership to place candidates. He had no interest. Al he wanted was a commitment from me to pay $4900 by credit card immediately up front.
the phone number, 646-595-1660, traces to downdown New York:
He used the classic hard sales close techniques to close me.

Got a call from John L after updating my Monster resume... said he was from ACT and referred me to www.ceopresident.net. They are a fee-based career marketing service.
Nothing good or bad them implied here; just wanted to share the URL info.
