My parents just received a call from this phone #.  The caller told them he was their grandson, my son, and was calling from a jail in Mexico. He said
that his friends Dad had paid for a trip and the friend had been caught with pot and he now needed them to wire $2000 to the jail so he could get out. (The
scary thing is that the name of the friend is actually the name of a good frind of my sons.)  When my parents asked him if he had called his parents he said he was too embarrassed to.  They then asked for his birthdate and the caller hung up immediatly.  Needless to say, my parents are quite scared!

I got VM/call from 651-204-4034 at 7 pm Monday 1/6/14. Caller: $3K Food coupon & Med Alert SCAM. Caller's name Jenny. ID said "UNKNOWN NAME".  Messager talked about I would receive $3,000 in Food coupons and a Medical Alert "Free" installation as I was referred by a "Friend". Press 1 - to proceed, Press 5 to cancell. I did not respond either way. But reached back to search the number today 1/7/14.

Got a call around 6 pm from this number.  It is similar to a friend's number, so I answered before I checked carefully.  Guy wanted to send me out two Medical Alert bracelets and cards.  I hung up.  So annoying!!  Lots of people let unknown calls roll into their voice mail whether they are home or not.  90% of the time the annoying callers hang up after 2-3 rings anyway, and almost always hang up once the voice mail comes on.

9:25am  No one calls me this early so clear that it is phone harassment.  Unknown caller - seriously people why bother.  And who is giving out phone numbers for seniors?  Who is selling our information?

Blocking numbers is handy BUT the scammers change numbers daily in order to trick you into answering.  The numbers are fake and generally unable to trace.

I hang up as soon as I realize it is a telemarketer.  With my Panasonic cordless phones I can block 30 numbers.  I put them on the block list.  I have so many blocked I have to remove some.  Time for a better Panasonic that blocks 250 numbers.

Total scam. Offering coupons for groceries for seniors.  My guess is they are searching for voice mail pickups and an empty house.  Cops should be checking caller id's on burglarized homes and see if this number shows up. All in Minnesota I would guess,

This call was unusual as far as scammer calls go.  They let it ring 13 times.  I turned my answering machine off.  Because my answering machine turns on after 10 rings, I turned it back on, and immediately back off again after about 5 or 6 rings.  Caller ID said:  Minneapolis, MN.  What is the point of being on a national DNC list if every caller seems to be exempt from the system?  Your Federal Government at work for you.

I just got a call from this company as well.  They were trying to get me to approve their sending of a phone alert device.  Press 1 to receive the free item or 5 to decline.  The name came up as "Unavailable".

All very good information to people that are not aware of caller id spoofing, but no matter where the calls actually come from, is basically insignificant.The main purpose of these medic alert for seniors scammer's calls, is to one way or another, get our credit card numbers, so they can use them to their own advantage, and defraud us. Obviously the main targets of this (and many other scams) are the elderly, who in many cases, are the ones  least able to afford to be cheated out of their meager savings and incomes. Every piece of information we each can share with others, may help the elderly and the gullible from being taken advantage of. Thanks-John

Called out for bad, misleading, and outdated info.

Area code 651 has been around for St. Paul and the eastern portion of the Twin Cities metro area since 1998.  Area code 612 only covers a few cities, including Minneapolis proper, and the University of Minnesota, and a small handful of other places.

And you are putting far too much trust in the caller ID and caller name (CNAM) that is reported by your telephone, anyway:

From the Wikipedia article "Caller ID Spoofing at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing

"... Caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes. Because of the high trust people tend to have in the Caller ID system, spoofing can call the system's value into question. ...";

" ... In February 2008, a Collegeville, Pennsylvania man was arrested for making threatening phone calls to women and having their home numbers appear on their caller ID to make it look like the call was coming from inside the house. ...";

and

"... Telephone exchange equipment manufacturers vary in their handling of caller name display. Much of the equipment manufactured for Bell System companies in the United States sends only the caller's number to the distant exchange; that switch must then use a database lookup to find the name to display with the calling number. Canadian landline exchanges often run Nortel equipment which sends the name along with the number. Mobile, CLEC, Internet or independent exchanges also vary in their handling of caller name, depending on the switching equipment manufacturer. Calls between numbers in differing country codes represent a further complication, as Caller ID often displays the local portion of the calling number without indicating a country of origin or in a format that can be mistaken for a domestic or invalid number.

This results in multiple possible outcomes:

The name provided by the caller (in the analog telephone adapter configuration screen for voice-over-IP users or on the web interface on a spoofing provider) is blindly passed verbatim to the called party and may be spoofed at will

The name is generated from a telephone company database using the spoofed Caller ID number.

A destination provider may display no name or just the geographic location of the provided telephone area code on caller ID (e.g., "ARIZONA", "CALIFORNIA", "OREGON", or "ONTARIO"). This often occurs where the destination carrier is a low-cost service (such as a VoIP provider) running no database or outdated data in which the number is not found.

If the displayed number is in the recipient's address book, some handsets will display the name from the local address book in place of the transmitted name. Some VoIP providers use Asterisk (PBX) to provide similar functionality at the server; ... this may lead to multiple substitutions with priority going to the destination user's own handset as the last link in the CNAM chain."

So, don't trust your caller ID number, and trust your caller ID name (CNAM) even less!

Received a call a little before 9 p.m. I said Hello and heard a click. The caller ID said it was Minneapolis; however, as far as I know, Minneapolis does not have 651 -- they're 612.
