The funny thing about this telemarketing scam is my city in Minnesota _does_ offer free water testing, so that was an immediate giveaway to this scam.  If you listen they say press 1 for more info, but no option to opt out. I opted to press 1 to talk to a human, but all that happens is the same recorded voice tells you to leave your name and contact information. I just told them to take me off their list and I'm reported them.

You can report these calls to either the FCC and/or DoNotCall.gov

Received a call from this number but did not answer the phone.  I called the number back and "shocking" it was disconnected.  This is a total scam so pass the word around to all your friends and family to beware.  If there is water testing to be done YOUR local water company will call you not some made up company with a disconnected number trying to steal your money or information.

Appears to be a telemarketer selling water filters, but no legitimate business would use a spoofed number.  This is a spoofed number.  There is a strong possibility this is a SCAM.

Getting repeated calls from this outfit. They're robo calls, which if I remember correctly, are supposed to be illegal in the state of MN.  Getting more and more of these kinds of calls.  the Do Not call list is an absolute waste of energy.

Wow, they do get around; I'm in the Chicago metro area. Caller ID came up "Unknown" but with this number. Same scammer message about a "water quality test" as a "free public service." Yeah right. Not buying it.

To an arrogant hand biter:

The actual link text in every thread header says you can "report unwanted calls", which you did. Then you came back less than tweny minutes later to complain because this site does not work outside its scope for your personal problem. You also cited 800Notes itself as your "caller", an error which helps ruin the collected data for everyone. Your claim of being "low on patience" is thus correct.

The "water filter / power supplier" fraud calls have been not as numerous as from credit reprice scammers, but have formed a notable percentage of scam calls for a while now. The smarter scammers will not make themselves easy to find, nor are you likely to convince federal regulators to join you as co-plaintiffs, if I correctly read your intentions. Rather than beat your chest and announce threats here, your vast "resources" could possibly reveal a valid US address for your callers to serve a summons. If that's found and shared with the readers in the next few days, that would be great, before they pack up and reform under a new business name.

Incidentally, I hope you enjoy the new rush of email spam and junky callers which is bound to start now that you've publicized contact data you ostensibly might rather protect. It is exactly that carelessness which attracts unwanted intrusions from scammers in the first place.

Hi David,

I do not see how it's deceptive. It's a user supplied reverse phone number lookup database. If you have information about the caller, you can use the form to contribute. Your submission is viewed by other users, just like you can read all user contributed comments about the phone number owner.

To the maintainers of this site:

Pray tell, why do you offer a link to 'help identify unwanted callers', when it merely leads to a submission form to your bboard? A bit deceptive (don't you agree?)

At this point, it is unclear to me who's team you're on. Correct me if I am mistaken.

Repeated telemaketing auto-calls which simply ask: " If you wish to no longer receive these calls, press [1] now." After research on the calling number (701-712-0269), it appears I have no recourse to contact their Legal Department (I intend to file suit, accompanied by representatives of the FTC, FCC, as well as my personal attorney. In other words, I will attempt to close their doors (as well as access to their ill-gotten gains).

I am high on resources (financial and otherwise). However, I am low on patience.

Thank you for your time,

We received a call today at about 12:45pm regarding our concerns about our drinking water. It was obviously an autodialer who left the message. We are supposed to be on the Do Not Call List, but we see how much that's helped us-LOL. We get these and the:  "lower your mortgage/credit card interest rates" calls all the time, we're so sick of it! I guess this is why they've switched to autodialers, so you can't respond. And even if you press a number to be removed from their list or actually talk to a "representative," they'll still keep calling regardless. Gosh, I'd love to be able to come through the phone!

the do not call list is pointless, useless and less help than 2x4 up side the head = read the language - if you report a number, it's strictly up to them whether they choose to take any action and I've yet to find one single person that has had any help from them.

Yes, we received this automated call tonight at 8:15 PM.  Chances are it is some telemarketing service that a water treatment company may have hired to do massive cold-calling in the hopes to get people to agree to some sort of water testing.  We did not push "1".  Just hung up.  We are in NC.

10/27/11  6:30pm  partial message about my water and homeowners having concerns about our water...blah, blah.

6/2/11  7pm - recording stating testing of area water, blah blah.....also registered on do not call site and it does help but not able to totally eliminate phone harassment.

Appear to be harassing the phone numbers in my area and I am now going to file a complaint with DNC.

"Free public service test"....  "Independent water testing" ....  all recording, of course.

It's a deceptive telemarketing scheme for some water testing; possibly water purification company.

Obviously, they are in violation of the telemarketing laws -  I'm reporting them now.

Just got a call from this number. With the fire at the waxahachie chemical plant today & concerns over air & water safety. I almost called this partial message "...homeowners only in your area. If you have any concerns about your drinking water, or have any concerns about your drinking water, press 1 now." number back thinking it was important. So glad I checked hear 1st. They're taking advantage of a bad event.

I received a call from this number at 7:45 pm. I let the voice mail get it. What part of the message I got was something about water control and pressing 1. I live in Texas. They are going to have a hard time getting anyone to fall for their con here, since we are in a very bad drought. I am just glad I have caller ID. Real easy to ignore these kinds of calls. But it is too bad the the do not call list doesn't work.

Ans. machine picked up. Message did not identify who calling, and trying to sounding like local county service. Said that water in area would be tested in the next two weeks and if you want water to your house tested for free push a button on phone pad. Asked that only owner of home respond. Sounds to me like a tricky way to deceive and make recipient respond and end up talking to someone about something. If call is from N Dakota, then what do they want in NY? Sell water filters?

They pretend to be with some governmental utility, asking for a water sample - of course, the test will always read positive for contaminants (even if your sample is clean) and then they try to sell you an overpriced filter system.
