This is a version of the you-have-committed-a-crime extortion scam and you are being...
1. charged with fraud or passing bad checks or embezzlement or
2. served with a court summons or arrest warrant or bench warrant or whatever or
3. located in preparation to being served or for a lawsuit or to be arrested or
4. sued for cable TV usage that you've been stealing for years or
5. whatever stupid crap reasons they will think up next.

And you have to...
1. call back with your case number or
2. confirm your address or SSN or whatever so you can be served or your papers can be processed or
3. pay $895 now to avoid paying $5,000 in court or
4. whatever stupid crap reasons they will think up next.

Beware extortion scams come in many flavors and they constantly evolve to stay one step ahead of the law.
The FBI warns about payday loan extortion scams here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710
The BBB has issued several alerts on this scam, just google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"
Never do what they tell you to do but report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

I got the same call yesterday. The lady was demanding that i call the (888)735-6033 A&N- within an hour, or they where going to send a sherriff to my house and serve me. I was so scarred, i couldn't figure out who i owed money to or why i was getting sued. My credit is good. She even gave me a fake case #. I was very lucky i called my friend and she looked into  the number and discovered that it was fraud. It really upsets me that people go around doing this. It should be stoppped a.s.a.p.

They keep harassing me as well with multiple back to back calls, they don't leave messages, when I spoke to the female, she gave me a number I needed to call who was in charge of my case but could not answer any of my questions regarding what it was about or who is filing a "civil complaint" against me.  I have since filed a complaint with the Attorney General and the FTC.  You can file complaints online. I suggest everyone do the same. The number she gave me 888-735-6033, and is linked to a company called A&N Financial.

Getting the same calls you all are. The annoying thing is they keep calling back repeatedly in a 10 minute timeframe. They will call the house, I wont' pickup, they call 3 more times and they have my cell number. They are asking for my husband and I of course act dumb. I think they are a collection agency but regardless they are violating by calling 4 times in a row. Plus my cell phone is mine.
they had called from a florida number a few weeks ago and I threatened the guy on the phone with legal action. The problem is they will not say who they are with. Which to me raises a red flag even if they are an agency. If the continue to pester, I'm going to give them an overseas number.

Same message, for someone that doesn't live here.  I told them I was friends with the sherriff and would just go ask him what was going on. She then claimed the papers were not filed yet but, would be if I didn't verify some information. I told her to go ahead and forward the papers and I was heading to the sherriff to find out what it was about. Good to know it's a new collection agency.

I answered this call from someone claiming to be from the "Sherriff Department" asking for a person that didn't live here.  I was asked if I knew this person that they were looking for, because they had court documents that needed to be delivered to her.  I told them "no, I never heard of this person".  They then hung up.  I called the number back that showed on my caller I.D. and the first response was from a recording saying that all circuits were busy.  The second try, a female answered and I asked who she was and she responded by asking who I was.  After repeating my question and telling her that I had this number showing up on my caller I.D. and was trying to find out who it was that called, she refused to say who they were and what they called for, and then hung up.  I believe that this person worked for a debt collection agency out of Las Vegas.
