They are getting me as well.  Seems to be based on new and/or renewing newspaper subscriptions...

Anybody find out a way to make it stop?

It wouldnt be so bad that I get called 2-3 times a day if someone was actually on the other end.  No one there at all.

BEWARE!!! THE PERSON WHO IS CALLING YOU IS PROBABLY THE COMPANY THAT IS SOLICITING YOU TO USE THEIR BUSINESS TO FIND OUT WHO IS CALLING YOU. QUITE AN INTELLIGENT IDEA BUT IT SHOULD BE ILLEAGAL. BEWARE!!!

This is a telemarketing company.  You you dial the number directly, you will be prompted to enter your phone number for removal from the auto dial system.  I have done this and it worked.

This is some type of SCAM. I registered my phone number in the CELL PHONE DO NOT CALL LIST and these people are now calling me.

ive received calls from 7048170527 today @ 9:04am, 6:33pm, and 8:04pm... 3 missed calls in 1 day!!! i tried calling the number back (like last week) and was prompted by a computer generated service to follow simple instructions to remove my number from the call list.. but to allow a few days for the calls to stop.. so i did that.  since then theyve gone from 1 er 2 calls a day to 3 calls per day!  how can a company consistantly solicit you via phone without your permission?? bordering on harrassment!?! and then make you jump through hoops to get em to stop.. only to be told (by a friggin computer voice) to allow a few MORE days of harrassment before my number is removed!! our nation has TOOO MUCH exploitation!!!!!

All this company is doing is verifying subscriptions and offering promotions from the company that hired them.  I think people are understandably super jumpy these days.

The sob that is doing this needs a lawsuit to deal with.  

Anyone for chipping in to file the suit?

I don't subscribe to a paper at all and have talked to no one about a newspaper. We live in Hawaii and have for 4 years. I have been getting alot of freaky untraceable dead end calls from a couple areas. California, DC, etc. Every Google, answer or not, it is like being in a room with no exits. No reason, no replies, no telemarketers.... Two profiles on MySpace hacked, my computer taken over, but nothing happens that normal hackers would do. More like... monitoring.

I haven't subscribed to a newspaper, but I DID just buy tickets to the SF Symphony and the calls started around that same time (SF Symphony has called me personally too).

Call this number: 1-440-331-6633 for their "Do Not Call" list.

I also emailed the CEO of the company:

Subject: "Hey Bob! I tried calling you five times today!"

Body: "No wait! That was YOUR company that called me five times today.
HEY A***OLE.... take your s*** for brains company and shove it up your greedy, unethical a**."

Used a junk email address.
Whew, I feel better!

I recently subscribed to San Jose Mercury News and started getting (almost daily) calls from this number.

telemarketer keeps calling my number.

Recently my hubby reactivated our newspaper subscription due to a payment mishap.  A few days later got a call from this number.  Later that night got another call from the same company (caller name was the same), but from but from 216-744-1132. They called the next day from the 216 number asking how the paper was and then went into a sales pitch!

I told hubby to hang up because that was shady and I had already informed him of what I've read on this site.

I have just signed up for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and I am also getting calls from this number.  They have been calling for weeks and never leave a message.  I am canceling my subscription immediately!

resubscribed to the houston chronicle last week and received a call from this number... missed call no message. wonder what they want??

This number has called 5 times today. No one is there when I answer. I called and the first thing it ask " if you want to be removed" press one ans comfirm enter and comfirm your number. It takes to 2 days fpr removal.

Received a call yesterday (not the first, but the first I answered). They asked if this was the "..." household, using my last name. I too recently subscribed to the newspaper--the Houston Chronicle. I didn't answer the question, just hung up since I had no idea who they were.

THE CALLS ARE PURCHASED BY ADVERTIZERS WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR SOMETHING.  IN THIS CASE, IT SEEMS TO BE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS, AS I TOO SIGNED UP FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE.  IT IS LIKELY THAT THE COMPANY WHO IS CALLING ALL OF YOU IS THE SAME COMPANY THAT IS ADVERTIZING ON THIS SITE. IE: THE COMPANY THAT IS SELLING YOU... "FIND OUT" WHO IS CONTACTING YOU BY JOINING OUR MEMBERSHIP FOR A SMALL FEE. LOOK AT KEVIN'S AD ON THE FIRST MESSAGE. ALSO, GO TO THE OTHER LINKS WHEN YOU GOOGLED THIS NUMBER AND YOU WILL FIND THE SAME THING, MOST LIKELY WRITTEN BY THE SAME PERSON.  REPORT THE ADVERTIZERS!!!

I live in the bay area in California and I keep receiving calls from this phone number. I've never answered it, though.

I just received a call from this number. I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, so I Googled it and came up with this website. I just subscribed to the Austin American-Statesman, so I definitely think that has something to do with it. I looked up "Ver-A-Fast" after seeing that some of you identified the company, and it appears that they are essentially a telemarking contractor. Those of you without recent newspapers subscriptions, it's possible some other company you have done business with recently has hired Ver-A-Fast for the same thing.
I have heard that these companies have automatic dialing systems that continuously dial numbers. Therefore, if someone actually answers a call and agrees to speak with the rep, the system will keep dialing numbers but no one will be on the line when the call is answered. This would explain why the calls are coming in but no one seems to be on the line.
This was my first call from them, but if they continue (as I predict they will) I will try to find a way to be removed from their list. I'll let you all know if it's successful.

Got a call from this, just subscribed to the Austin Statesman.  Guess they're all connected somehow

I just called the star-tribune.  They said that they would add me to the do-not call list immediately.  Hopefully that solves it.

i have gotten several calls from this number recently.  I also have just signed up for a newspaper, The Star Tribune, in Minneapolis.  How do you make it stop, I am registered with the do not call list!
