The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I got a call today from an unknown number. The woman said she was investigator Andrea Simmons. She threatened me with a summons and a possible warrant. I called and they answered stating they were Southeast Financial. I stated "your a debt collection agency?" She said yes but then said no we are a lidiation company. She mispronounced litigation. I then asked to speak to woman who left me message. She got on phone and quite honestly if he were truly an investigator she would come on the phone stating "this is Investigator Simmons" but he only said "hello". I said yes. She asked if I was Kellie and I said yes. She said she was representing some law firm and I told her to repeat it because I am writing this down for my Attorney. She said that is who she wants to speak with. I told her to "cease and deceit all phone calls and if she would like to communicate with me please do so in writing (she said she wasn't going to in writing) I then told her any further.l communicating with me via phone will be deemed harassment and I will press charges. I then hung up. Do these people really think we are this stupid??

LEGAL CARRIER SERVICE, LLC is who Carl James is with now :-). I guess he can't seem to keep a job since he is now reprsenting another company. Busy boy who couldn't get a real job, so he tries to con others. I have turned him into the FCC for Do Not Call violations and have asked AT&T to provide the number for tracking his location if possible. SCAMMER, just hang up. I told him to have a nice day and p****off.

received a call from Carl James twice from 704 909 6620 along with a docket number asking for money for a loan i never took out, he said i would have to go to court out of state if i didnt pay it, then later thru the conversation-said when they come to deliver my papers, don't give my social security number to them---then they'll assume they have the wrong person and ill never hear from them again. He said give them 4 different last num,bers of my social security numbers.    this was a red flag to me.

Got a call saying they are delivering legal papers to the house.  They gave a docket number, but we have no reason to think that any legal papers would be delivered to the house.

I received a call from this guy and when I asked for his address, he got upset and indignant. If it was a real credit collection agency they would have to give the address. He said his name was Mr. Rayto working for Southeast Financial (litigation department), but when I googled that company name regardless to say it wasn't in the same state as the area code 704. Collection scammer.
