I have tried that in the past and I never get anything in writing and they keep calling anyway.  I have no patience for people who can't follow directions, and therefore will not talk to them ever again.

My issue is that they don't even call looking for me. I've asked at least three times over the past year for them to remove my number; sometime they actually hang up in my ear. I told one guy to f$?k off and he called me back to tell me he out me back in the list. Ha!

I keep getting messages from 705-872-4372 asking for someone that I have no clue who they are. It is not my name. They don't even have the correct phone number and it is only computer generated. They call about once or twice a week and I'm tired of it!

Yup, don't sweat it if you're in Ontario, and your debt is 2+ years old.

Answer the phone next time they call, inform them you're recording the call, ask for their full legal name, collector number, and current address, and explain that you wish to only receive mail correspondence from them. If they ignore you, report them to the Ministry.

In the interim, if you wish, you can change your number, and the calls will (naturally) stop.

Of course?IN THE LARGER PICTURE?assume responsibility for your debt, and pay off what you can, when you can. These guys have purchased your debt for pennies on the dollar, and as a result, will accept a settlement close to zero. They know they have zero legal recourse, and so hope to simply intimidate and scare you.

So...the next time they call, do this:

Over the phone, offer them 5% of what you owe "to settle the alleged debt, and stop the calls" and ask them to send you a "Final Settlement Offer" in writing with their company letterhead, signed and dated, that stipulates they're accepting your payment of 5% of the alleged debt as final and complete settlement of the debt, and that they're authorized to do so. Tell them you must receive it in the next 72 hours, or else the deal's off.

When it arrives within 72 hours, pay it and sleep like a baby that night, knowing you're moving forward with your life.

When the phone rings next time from the NEXT collection agency that's trying to recover the other 95%, tell them you received and exercised a final settlement offer from the previous authorized collection agency for the full amount owing, you have a permanent record of payment made, and that further phone calls will be treated as undue, illegal harassment, and will elicit an appropriate response.

That will do the trick.

At that point, you'll also be able to request that the debt be expunged from your credit report, since you've legally settled it in full.

Hope that helps.

In Canada, it is legal to tell them to stop calling, you only want correspondence in writing, they legally HAVE to stop calling you or they can be sued.

Ya its a collection agency and they make none stop calls (recorded)  to make you think they are taking you to court! Mine has fallen off the credit report and yet after 7yrs they are still trying! Be prepared for them to keep calling! Just remember don't take ownership over the phone or ask them to send you anything! And the number does change time to time! They are very rude and pushy not very helpful! So just say sorry he or she is not in can I take a msg! Then ignore it! Oh and remember if they are calling you because you owe someone money! things happen and sometimes its hard to get back on your feet again! but one day you will be there! Good Luck and all the Best!!!!!!
