I have had 3 calls in the last hour and a half. Haven't answered any of them. Thank heavens for caller display. I block calls and watch for them to change the number by one digit.

My father received a call from this man with the Indian accent this afternoon. He played dumb and asked him to call back at 5:00 when I would be home to deal with it. Sure enough, 5:02 the man calls back. I told him that I was not interested in whatever "bug" he needed to fix on my computer and to not call this number again. He called back as soon as I hung up from another number. I told him to not call again an hung up. He called back immediately, again from another number and said the same thing and hung up again. He called back a 4th time and told me that I needed to listen to him talk. I said that it doesn't work that way and he needs to stop calling now. He said, "fine, get bugged then!" I hung up and luckily he hasn't called again. He's got a dialect that generates a new number each time so you can't block him. Lovely.

This number called me and used the name of someone I had just got off the phone with.  When I recognized the name but not the voice, I ended the conversation before they could finish explaining that they needed me to go into my computer and "fix" corrupt files with their help.

Just got a call from this number.  There was a long ring on my phone. The id for my phone registered two calls from this number at the same time.  No one on line when I answered.  Since I have friends in California  I answered it.  Anyone calling from Arcata, Cal now will have to listen to my answering machine.

Been getting calls from a man with an Indian accent the last few weeks.  The number was blocked, however, I got two missed calls from this number this am.  Third time they called, I answered.  It is the same guy with Indian accent. Last week when I first answered the call.....All I can hear is a bunch of noise in the back ground. He told me that he was from the Health Department and wanted to know if I have ever taken birth control.  I told him it was none of his business.  I asked where he got my number, he replied the hospital. I told him I have never been to the hospital and furthermore the hospital would never give out this info.  He said I was entitled to compensation due to birth control pills, I told him if such a thing exists he could go through the proper channels and send the info via snail mail and hung up on him.  Apparently they didn't get the message and they are still trying to call.  Now I am going to block the number since it doesn't say caller blocked.  FYI the 707 area code is from Solano County California.  Solano County is located between Sacramento and San Fransisco.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

I have been getting a call from this number several times over the past few months regarding an alleged computer issue. Initially the caller stated they were from a company that monitors computer activity and indicated my computer has a virus. I continued to ask over and over again what company they were with and they told me they monitored windows and help consumers wipe out viruses out of their computer for no cost to them. I've told them several times to stop calling me that I didnt need their help, after that the calls stopped for a short period of time, approximately 2 weeks.

About 3 days ago, I downloaded a program that messed with my internet explorer settings and caused some errors and the fact my comptuer has had all sorts of crap on it, yesterday, I did a complete clean of my computer all the way down to deleting the partition, formating, and reinstalling windows. I just got a call back from this individual who told me my banking account information was being broadcasted and he was calling to help me stop that. Just to kill my curiosity, I did a couple of checks on my computer as he instructed and what he was describing did in fact match up to what he was saying until he gave me the next step.

I directed me to go to a website www.ammyy.com and click on the icon that says "start working with ammyy admin" a remote desktop application. HHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, do you think my stupid. I asked him over and over again questioning his motivation and he stated he was helping me. I then flipped the situatuion and asked him if I told him I was the president of the US would he believe me, no answer, i then asked him if I called him and told him to allow me access to his computer openly would he do it. He beat around the question and indicated he was calling to help me. I told him my brother in law worked for Microsoft and if I needed help with computer issues, I would contact him to help.

This is a total scam, whatever the situatuion, dont fall for these fools demands, they will say they are helping you but that is totally opposite of what their intentions are. They are there to scam you.

In every call, the person on the other end of the line had a middle eastern accent and was unable to provide me with anyone else to speak to when requested.

This number called me saying they were "Microsoft" and they have been in touch with my ISP saying that there have been multiple reports of viruses and malware on my computer. I followed the first couple of steps he asked me to do before I thought it was suspicious. He asked me to Run: MSConfig and look at the services running. He said all of them should be on. I searched Microsoft Virus calling and have read multiple sources saying this is a scam. Just a heads up guys and gals!

Got the call just now. Ignored thanks to call display - I have no idea where the 707 area code is so I'm definitely not expecting a call from there. Sounds like the Microsoft scam again from other descriptions. Has anyone noticed many of these numbers are used by different scams? I wonder if there aren't a set of numbers that are either shared by these guys or are passed around.

The guy with an east indian accent said he was from microsoft and has been getting virus messages from my computer. He knew me by my maiden name. When he started asking me if we could proceed after his schpiel I told him it's 10pm and then he hung up on me. I called my brother and he said they get the number and name legally but are running a scam. Just make sure you don't give them any personal information. There is no way to block the number either. It showed up as unknown name and phone number is 707-822-9850

I just got a call from this number.  The guy had an Indian accent and said he was from Microsoft and same story- there was something wrong with my computer.  He asked me to go to my computer and I said no.  He also asked me how old I was and I did not give that info either.  He said I had a sweet voice.  What a dumb a**!  Obviously, he was trying to scam me.  I'm going to call the police.
