If you have VOIP (Internet phone) you can use their web site such as Mediacom to reject certain numbers. Works great for me. Every time I get a telemarketer call I add their number to the list...boom...gone.

When I picked up no one was there. I sat there for a few seconds in silence. Then I heard an automated system say, "Good-bye," and they hung up. I have the No Soliciting service from CenturyLink, so they had to press "1" to even make my phone ring.

A woman with an heavy accent stated that my computer is not getting Microsoft Update - obviously some type of scam.
I told her I didn't have any Microsoft software, and she hung up.

Heavy Indian accent and tons of noise in the background indicating this is a boiler room, and the guy claimed to be from "The Computer Department of Microsoft". Laughable. I tried to keep him on the phone as long as I could but when he told me he had multiple warnings that my computer was "sending him" I couldn't keep the sarcasm out of my voice when I said "Oh really, how interesting, please tell me more" which made him hang up. Only a complete tool would fall for something this ridiculous and stupid. Reported them to the FCC since it's a Do Not Call violation, but I doubt that will do anything.

"Michael" from "computer support" called.  Very slow speaking with Indian accent.  He ask "do you have a coompooter", to which I said "no".  "You don have a coompooter?"  "No" I replied, "I don't believe in them".  Line went dead.  Maybe he fainted.  So I hung up.

Caller named "John" with accent that sounded like he was from India told my husband that my husband's computer was sending his company (which he didn't identify) messages that it was having problems and that he could help fix them. Sounded like scam right off bat. My husband asked caller to tell him what he was selling, caller did not answer question. Husband told caller to remove our telephone number from their database.

Called number back, was disconnected.
My caller id read "Miles Cove" and the scam number was 7096520342

I picked up the call because I love to mess with telemarketers. The guy with an obvious Indian accent (I personally live the accent and have nothing against the people) and he said very slowly that he was with Microsoft and he was calling about my computer. I asked him what was wrong in a very nervous voice. He started into the crap about my computer having malware and viruses. After a bit he got a good breath in and I told him how very scared I was because Microsoft managed to invade my MacBook. He sighed and hung up.
->If you ever want a good laugh, look up gerantgerant on YouTube. The guy is famous for messing with telemarketers.

Prank Call
I played along last week with the scammer for a while.  I brought online a Windows XP machine in my VMware environment to allow him to connect and load their bogus software.

The company is fixmycomputerdude.com (www.fixmycomputerdude.com), or  "FMCD".  They call pretending to have information about your computer's problems, then try to sell you a support contract.

I didn't sign up (obviously), but the "tech" proceeded to do "clean up work".  They'll give you false information about what you see in the computer event logs and tell you they need to fix them.  Half way after installing a bunch of insignificant software they switch and tell you to pay about $150 subscription fee to continue the work.

I got a lot of enjoyment watching them run in circles... but now they're calling back telling me to pay up.  I lol.  Also, this is the "headquarters" in Texas... a nice looking home in a suburban area by the DFW airport:  3417 Bear Creek Dr., Hurst., Tx.  Google Street View:   https://www.google.com/maps/place/3417+Bear+Creek+Dr/@32.884874,-97.176416,3a,75y,176.1h,82.39t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1szC5SXQILu9edAN5guAQuUw!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x864dd5e32ab409ff:0xaab688d69f1942ef

This is the fake PC tech confidence game.

Essentially some fiend in a boiler room, usually in South Asia, wants to coax you into dropping your firewall and security measures and play havoc with your system, possibly with the goal of then selling you the ''solution'' to the problem they caused. Worse yet they might plunder your hard drives for whatever can be sold or used against you. If your credit account data are volunteered or captured, there is no end to the trouble which may follow from all their criminal friends.

The scammers count on most computer owners being ''appliance users'' who don't understand what's under the hood and being easily misled. They may claim to have a pile of complaints because your system is spewing spam, or else instruct the user to open a shell and look at perfectly innocuous system feedback and claim there is something dangerous happening. This is the PC equivalent of the crooked auto mechanic who squirts oil on your axle and wants $1600 to ''repair'' the non-damage.

The dumber ones claim to be from ''the Windows Corporation'' or the ''Microsoft legal department'' or something as implausible. Their actual knowledge of personal computers is always pitifully low, as reported many times when real PC techs are called. (Sometimes their command of English is little better.) Often the reps become hostile and curse you out if you indicate any sort of informed resistance.

Microsoft is not running any constant emergency alert system and is surely not going to run a reverse tech support call center devoted to writing each of us a trouble ticket. If a billion dollar global corporation won't monitor your every mouse gesture, *why* would you grant such invasive access to some two-bit "repair shop" you've never heard of? DO NOT follow any instructions from these goons and don't give them any satisfaction of making you upset.

Here's the verdict straight from Microsoft:

Avoid tech support phone scams

Strange call pretending to be from Microsoft tech support
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/f ... 2e-2ab81645553d

Some relief came the first week in October 2012 as the FTC spanked whole gangs of these creeps with damage awards.

Caller ID read "Miles Cove." A man with an accent sounding like he was from India told my husband that my husband's computer was sending them (don't know which company he cited) messages that something was wrong. My husband asked for his name, the man said "John" after pausing. My husband hung up on him, but not before asking what the man was trying to sell and did not get a clear answer. Seemed scam like for sure.

This person, "Victor," has been calling every day and I let it go to the answering machine but no message was left.  My husband answered the call this morning and Victor said he was calling from Microsoft and our computer was pumping out spam and malware.  My husband said good-bye and hung up.  I am in California.
