Said it was a pay phone. I answered and was warned about scams. Never heard the name for the person on the other end. I hung up.

This just happened to me. My caller ID said "Pay Phone" and the number was 713-718-1049.  A Hispanic male said his name was "Deputy Garcia" and said I had a call from an inmate by the name of "insert hispanic male name that I don't remember here".   He asked if I knew the inmate and I told him no. He asked if I was sure I didn't know him and I said yeah.  He then said to call this number to keep the $3.87 charge from being put on my telephone bill.  He said he would "keep the line open" for 5 minutes and that it would only take a minute to talk to the woman at the desk and tell her that I didn't know the inmate and tell her "Deputy Garcia"s badge number 1143. So I did dial the *72 number before realizing what was going on. I got a busy signal.  I called the *72 number several more times trying to get an answer.
That is when it started dawning on me that this was probably a scam and the *72 was doing something.   I called the operator and talked to billing and told her what was going on.  She knew EXACTLY what I was talking about, said it is a scam and they are working on finding out who is doing this.  She told me to dial 73# and it would stop them from being able to use my phone.  What had happened is that when I pressed *72, it allowed inmates to make phone calls through my phone without my phone ringing.
I have had the "Pay Phone" number call me back a few more times now and I was told to just not answer it.
If this happened to you, call your phone company IMMEDIATELY so they can know what is going on, tell you what to do, and NOT charge you for these inmates using your phone!

Call from Harris County Texas Prison Inmate, wanted me to dial *72 and then a phone #, I called the operator to see if that would really get the charge for accepting a phone call from the wrong inmate off of my phone, she said NO Dont Do It it is a SCAM that prisoners use to make free phone calls that bill to your phone #. if you do press *72 the way to turn it off is *73, some phones it is 72# to turn on call forwarding and 73# to turn it off.
Wanted to get this out there so no one gets scammed like I nearly did. I was so excited to hear from a family member just incarcerated that I almost did fell for it. I noticed the # he called from and the # he wanted me to enter were different numbers.
