I received this call on Oct. 5th, 2011. The caller ID said TEXAS HIGHWAY. They called at 8:35pm... something inside me told me not to answer, not to trust them... reading everyone's comments here tells me my instincts were right.

I looked up the location the # came from, I found this (right in Houston, TX, around the corner from me) -

I received a call from this number, they were requesting pledges for families of Texas Highway Patrolmen, fallen in the line of duty.   They wanted an address in which to send information to ..  Is this solicitation legitimate?  I did give them my address .. now I'm regreting that I did.  Is this a scam? and if so, now what steps should I take to protect myself from potential identity theft?

These people call constantly.  Chances are they already had your address. I say this because when you answer their call, they address you by your name.  Just don't send them money. All telemarketing solicitations are a scam and that is what this is hiding under the guise of a non profit organization.

Called asking for money.

Don't give them a dime.  They open with Texas Highway Patrol, then say "I want you to know everything is okay," followed by Texas Highway Patrol Association and stated "we are the only non-profit association for the Texas Highway Patrol that does not use telemarketers."  Check the number they are calling from.  They use telemarketers.  I got a call this morning (Saturday, May 21, 2011).  I asked them if DPSOA (Department of Public Safety Officers Association) used telemarketers?  The caller said he was not familiar with that organization.  Which means he is probably a telemarketer and knows nothing about the Texas Department of Public Safety.  He went on to ask if I realized two Troopers had died in the line of duty this past year and I said yes.  I started to ask if he knew their names, but it was apparent he knew nothing about DPS as we talked.  I even informed him that I worked for DPS and he just kept following his script.  He claimed their office was in Austin but he was calling from (713) which is Houston and more particularly in this case Pasadena area. The whole call was offensive!

NOT the real Texas High. Patrol. They are CON ARTISTS! HANG UP ON THEM!

Received call this afternoon 12-6-2010 wanting money for a specific officer that was killed earlier in November.  While the officer they named did lose his life (rip) when they said, I highly doubt that all the money goes to the family.  They also claimed to not use telemarketers to solicit funds. Also doubtful as some of these posts are over 2 years old.

No, it is a scam.

Caller was soliciting donations for the TX highway patrol. Called Sunday at lunch time.
